Work Text:
The kitchen counter in the new ranch house in Dillon smelled faintly of pine and wood polish—a clean, non-Yellowstone scent. Beth Dutton watched through the oversized window as the clear blue Montana sky stretched out, utterly empty of drama. She wasn't just admiring the view; she was admiring the silence of it. We're finally free of Yellowstone, she thought, pouring herself a cup of black coffee. I'm finally getting happy with my little family.
Out past the white rail fence, she could just make out Rip and Carter rounding up a handful of stray cattle. The boy, who used to spend his days cleaning stalls just to stay warm, sat straight in the saddle, already settling into ranch life like a native.
A moment later, Carter's voice carried on the cold air, excited and clear. "Hey Rip, I'm glad to finally feel a part of a family. Who would have thought, I would be spending my first Christmas with you both.”
You know what Carter, you may not believe this son, and I never thought I would say this to a kid that wasn't mine, but I'm glad you are here with us too and we're all celebrating Christmas or first Christmas together as a family.
Come on, let's go inside to see if Beth needs help with the decorations.
Took you long enough to come inside. What were you two doing out there?
We were rounding up all the stray cattle, there were more than we thought. Then we took a break and basically had a man to man talk.
Oh Really? So, you did some male bonding..
[Carter gave Beth a soft grin]
Something like that.
Carter heads upstairs to get cleaned up.
Beth leans against the mantel on the fireplace, watching snow drift outside the meadow. “It’s strange,” she murmured. “I spent half my life wanting to run from that ranch. Imagining all the things we could’ve been if we weren’t shackled to it.”
Rip takes a long breath, eyes never leaving her.
“I told you once. I chose to be shackled to that ranch.”
He steps closer.
“What I didn’t say is… it wasn’t the ranch I was choosing.”
Beth looks at him — really looks.
“And what were you choosing, baby?”
“You,” Rip answers without hesitation. “Always you. I’d have lived in hell itself if it meant staying by your side.”
Beth swallows hard, blinking faster than she’d like.
“Well,” she whispers, a soft smile touching her mouth, “Here we are. Free. And I still ended up shackled to you.”
Rip grins. “Best damn shackle I ever had.”
They kiss, with the snow falling like a blessing around them.
[Beth with her eyes soft]
I recall you saying there were going to be some cold winters here. It's really starting to get cold. The snow looks so pretty outside.
[ Rip looks at Beth with love in his eyes ]
And with this fireplace going, it’s really cozy in here.
I am so happy we found a place to call home with Carter. You're so great with him now. We both were a little rough around the edges when he first got to Yellowstone.
You know I never told you he called me Mama. When I first heard it my first reaction was “Hey baby!” But then I thought about it, I can't be anybody's mama because I can't have kids. And what I said back to him, broke his heart but then I broke mine too.
Rip notices a tear falling down Beth’s cheek but moves close to wipe the stray tear and embraces her but she stops him. I don't normally show my emotions so easily but some moments really catch me off guard. I tried so hard not to go back to that moment but the holidays seem to do that to me. I have a soft spot when it comes to the people I care the most about.
So are you saying, you have a soft spot in her heart for Carter?
I'd have to say yes, but I also have a softer spot for you too and I'm believing the moment hit me when he called me Mama. Deep down I felt it but it scared the hell out of me, Rip. I never thought I would ever hear anyone call me that.. It felt good for just a second because I responded so fast but then that split second took it all away because I turned it down. But now look where we are. I could not imagine my life without Carter in it.
Unbeknownst to Beth or Rip, Carter caught the tail end of their conversation. Tears welled up in Carter's eyes because for the first time in a long time he felt like he belonged.
Carter joins Beth and Rip in the living room.
So are we going to get started on decorating the house for Christmas?
We were going to the Tree farm but it's started to snow so we'll have to wait. But what we can do is go shopping for decorations.
[Carter looks curious]
Where would we go exactly? There's barely any stores nearby.
There's a Tractor Supply Co store not too far into town where we can go.
Rip heads upstairs to get cleaned up so they can go.
Carter asks if they can stop by Kayce's on the way back so he could see Tate.
Beth says, sure why not. But we're not staying long; we have to rearrange furniture to see where we'll put the tree.
Beth and Carter go into the store while Rip parks the truck. Beth has her arm around Carter's shoulders ruffling his hair.
You need a haircut, baby. We'll actually let it grow out since it's winter time. But as soon as spring hits you're going to be seated in someone's barber chair.
Rip walked around the back of the store to find an indoor tree farm. They had fresh cut trees ready to go. He calls Beth on her phone to come to the back of the store so they could pick a tree to take home. They also needed hay for the horses and cattle.
Rip headed back around front to pick up the truck so the workers could load the truck up with hay and the Christmas tree.
Baby, How did you know to check back here?
I saw someone drive up to the front lot with a tree, so I decided to check it back here.
Nice. Okay Carter which tree do you like?
Whichever one you pick, I'll like it.
Okay, Baby, we'll take this 7 footer right here.
Let's go back inside to pick up some lights to put around the house, and the tree. We also need a tree skirt and bulbs. I want lights to decorate the stalls in the barn too.
Carter is off in a daze looking at the feeding buckets, wheel barrels, and such.
Hey Carter, where did you go, baby.
Oh! nowhere, it's not important. I'll head to the back to help load the truck.
Okay. Rip and I will be back there in a few.
[As Carter is walking to the back of the store]
Okay, Ma… Beth
[Carter's slip caught her in the throat]
Rip startles Beth out of her memory.
Hey Baby, are you ready to go check out?
Yes, let's go. Can we stop by my brother's house? We haven't seen them in a while, plus Carter wants to see Tate.
Sure, I don't see why not.
Around back, the truck bed is filled with hay for the horses and cattle plus the tree was tied to the top of the truck. All the bags had to go in the backseat with Carter.
Carter notices the ornaments in one of the bags plus some letters and glue.
Hey Beth what's all this stuff for?
We're going to do crafting at my brother's today. Family bonding time.
Oh! Yippee!
Hey! Cut that out.
Rip pulls up to Kacey’s house. It's been a while since Beth has seen her baby brother and his family.
Kayce is surprised to see his big sister dropping by.
Hey Little Brother! Long time no see.
Kayce and Beth embrace.
I've missed you so much. Where's Monica?
She and Tate are in the attic going through Christmas decorations.
Speaking of Christmas decorations we just came back from the store getting our tree and some new decorations.
That’s a nice size tree, you always like to go big when you do things, Sis.
Whatever happened to the decorations that were at Dad's.
We got rid of everything, remember, during the auction.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that.
I even asked you if you wanted anything to take it and you said no, little brother.
Yeah I remember that. I wasn't really thinking about Christmas at the time though.
We still have ours but it's old and dusty so we may even go to the store and pick up some new ones plus a real tree this year. Where did you guys go?
We went to the supply and tractor store. We actually bought a real tree.
Yeah, I can tell by the smell of it.
Beth says with a smirk]
I love the smell of fresh pine. You might not believe that but that's true.
Hey sis what are you guys doing for Christmas are you cooking?
You're not serious are you? If I cook we’re having some Hamburger Helper.
[Beth lets out a soft chuckle]
Okay so we're cooking. You, Rip, and Carter are definitely invited to come over and have dinner with us. We would love to have you.
Thank you for the invitation. I'll bring it up to Rip once he gets inside and see what he says.
He better say yeah.
I know right.
I better say yeah or what?
Kacey invited us over for Christmas dinner.
Oh yeah we are definitely coming over here because I am not having hamburger helper for Christmas dinner.
Hey! See little brother I told you…
Carter made his way up the stairs to the attic to see what Tate was doing.
Hey Tate!
Hey Carter! What's up? Where have you been man?
I thought you were mad at me or something cuz you don't reach out.
Man, I am busy on the ranch with Rip.
Hey Carter, can I ask you a question?
Sure, what's up?
Do you ever think about calling Rip, dad?
No I don't think he'd like that. I'd have to ask him first but I don't think he would like it. It didn't go over too well when I called Beth mama so no I don't think I'll do that.
When did you call Beth that?
It's been a while like when I first got to the ranch not too long after that.
What did she say?
She told me I couldn't call her that because it wasn't true.
Oh that's messed up. Maybe she had a good reason though.
Maybe so, but I don't think I'll do it again.
Hey Tate, do you have difficult conversations with your parents?
Not really but I think if I had to have that type of conversation it would be with my dad. I think it'll go over a little easier, I guess, because my dad is a guy right? then with my mom.
I'm pretty close to both my parents, so I don't think it would be that difficult.
You should try it though. Just ask him and see what he says. I do know that he feels some type of way about you though from when we went to the fair.
What do you mean?
He calls you son sometimes. I think if you did slip and call him dad I mean it will catch him off guard but I don't think he would reject you.
I don't know, I'd have to really think about that.
I just think he calls me that out of a force of habit. I don't think he actually meant anything by it.
Beth and Monica make their way up to the attic. They hear Carter and Tate talking.
Well Carter, I don't think Rip would say something like that and not mean it.
I don't know, I don't think I should call him anything but Rip.
[Tate says in a soft voice]
I'm sorry you had to go through that man. But just know we all consider you as family now.
Thanks Tate, that means a lot..
I mean it dude. I know we don't see each other that much but maybe we can hang out sometime, it's been a while.
How are things with you and Beth now?
We're good, I think.
Hey don't you think we should get downstairs? Beth bought this ornament kit so we can make our ornaments to put on the tree.. I think it's cool. You want to go check it out.
Yeah let's go, Hey Carter! Help me grab this box so I can take it downstairs to my mom.
As they are heading downstairs, they bump into Beth & Monica making their way up the stairs.
Hey Mom we were just coming downstairs to bring this box.
Okay, let's head downstairs so we can sort through it.
Okay.
Hey do you think they heard us..
Oh while we were talking about?
Yeah.
Maybe but it wouldn't be a bad thing you know.
Maybe it'll come up later, let me know if it does. Don't be nervous just asking him a question he might say yeah and it'll surprise you.
Hey Monica, what do you think the boys are talking about?
I'm not really sure I can actually take it later and see what he says.
Hey I know you mentioned to me about Carter calling your Mama sometime back.
Yeah I've been thinking about that a lot.
I even told her what happened that day. How I broke Carter's heart by telling him that he couldn't call me that. But not only did I hurt Carter's heart I hurt my own as well but we're okay now at least I think so.
Has he tried calling you that again?
He sort of did but I didn't let on that I heard it.
How did it make you feel?
I didn't mind it this time. I guess because our relationship is much stronger now. I'm in a better place than I was back then.
Do you think about ever telling him he can call you Mama now. I know you will never be able to have a child of your own but it seems like Carter is that replacement for you and he naturally fits with you and Rip as a family. I honestly think that's a beautiful thing. Biology isn't everything, it's about building a family with what's before you loving someone unconditionally and you seem like you love Carter even though he's not yours. What's really surprising to me is how well Rip has adapted to Carter being in you guys' life. He's exactly where he's supposed to be with the two of you. A found family is better than no family at all, and I'm sure Carter feels the same way.
I'm actually feeling a shift in our relationship with Carter. It's definitely a good feeling all around. I'm so glad to have you in my life Monica. It's always been easy for me to talk to you. I don't feel judged and looked down on when we discuss very important personal issues. Thank you so much for understanding.
Carter wanted to stop by and see Tate. We went to the Supply & Tractor store today and I found an orna kit. I wanted us to make our ornaments this year to put on the tree along with the store bought ornaments. I think it'll be fun to make them.
Okay, great. Let's grab the kit and see what we're working with.
Hey Carter?
Yes Ma’am.
Can you grab the kit out of the truck?
It’s right here.
Okay. Let me see it.
Tate and I opened it already.
Oh Okay.
We each started one already.
Oh okay. Let me see what you have so far.
Carter says, see mine has my name on it.
Oh that’s nice, baby.
Okay. Let me have one.
Okay, here is a clear bulb kit for you two. You may want to make Rips too.
Yours and Tate’s came out really neat.
Yea, now they have to dry on the stand for 24 hours.
They are cleaning up their mess with the ornaments.
Monica says the ornaments are so pretty. We've made one for John, Baby Dutton, Kayce, Me, Beth, Rip, Carter and how about we make one for your mom Beth?
Yes, we can make one for her too.
Kayce and Rip come back inside from being in the barn all this time.
So what do we have here?
Tate says, Dad, check out our ornaments for the tree.
Oh! These are nice.
Rip we have a set too.
Oh great. We can put them on the tree when we get home.
Carter says, we have to let them dry for 24 hours.
Okay.
Alright family, we have to get on the road. We have quite a bit of a drive ahead of us. It was nice catching up. We'll see you for Christmas dinner in a few weeks.
The drive home was quiet in the kind of peaceful way that comes after being surrounded by family. The sky over Dillon had shifted into a soft gray, the kind that promised more snow by nightfall. The fresh pine tree in the truck bed shifted gently with every turn, its branches brushing against the tied ropes like a heartbeat.
Inside the truck, the warmth from the vents made the windows fog slightly. In the back seat, the ornament box rested beside a pair of worn gloves and a half-unzipped jacket. The homemade bulbs inside were still drying, each one carrying a little piece of the day carved into it.
The ranch house came into view through the drifting flakes, its porch light already glowing like it was waiting for them. It didn’t feel like Yellowstone. It didn’t feel like the past. It felt like the beginning of something softer, something none of them had known how to name yet.
As the truck rolled to a stop, the weight of the day settled in. There was still so much to talk about, things left unspoken in the attic, in the store, in the moments between. But for now, all that mattered was the quiet, the cold, and the warm home waiting just a few steps away.
Rip says to Carter you grab the bottom of the tree, I'll grab the top. Honey, can you grab the base and put some water in it, so the tree doesn't dry out?
Sure Baby!
I'll tilt the tree down so you can push it in, son.
Okay.
Carter, make sure to add water to the tree base daily. Don't over water it or under water it, there's a level line in the water base.
Okay. I'll make sure to check it.
Carter Baby, Can you bring the bags out the trunk and I'll grab the ornaments.
Yes Ma’am.
Wow! It's a huge tree and it smells refreshing.
It sure does.
It's beginning to look like Christmas and we haven't even decorated it yet.
Yes it does.
Where are the lights for the tree?
I didn't see any lights for the tree yesterday when we decorated outside & the barn.
Did we pick up some from the store today?
I thought we did.
I can go check the truck on the floor.
That would be great, Baby!
Cater returned the four boxes of lights, they had slid under the driver's seat.
Okay, let's untangle the lights so we can add them to the tree.
Hey honey, you have yet to do your ornament.
I don't know the first thing about making an ornament. Can you make it?
I can make one for you Rip. They're super easy to make.
Thanks son, I appreciate it. I have to run a ranch. I don't have time to make an ornament.
Carter finishes gathering the glitter, glue, and ribbons for Rip’s ornament. Beth steps beside him, sorting the supplies like she’s running a board meeting.
Rip tries to peek over their shoulders.
Is this going to take long? Because that tree isn’t going to decorate itself.
Beth gives him a look that freezes him in place.
Baby, you can wait five minutes. Your ornament is happening, whether you participate or not.
Rip mutters under his breath and adjusts the base of the tree, pretending to look busy.
Carter gently fills the clear ornament with silver glitter, then adds a strip of burlap and ties a small piece of twine at the top.
There. I think this looks like him.
Beth smiles softly.
It sure does. Simple and rugged. Perfect for your dad.
Rip glances over, pretending he didn’t hear that last part.
Are you two done judging me?
Almost, Carter says with a grin, holding up the finished ornament for him to see.
Rip actually looks impressed.
Well damn. That’s nicer than I expected.
Beth hands it to him.
Go hang it up, Baby.
Rip lifts it carefully, like it’s something precious, and places it right in the center of
the tree.
There. First ornament up.
Carter lights up a little at that.
Looks good.
[Beth steps back, hands on her hips.]
Alright boys, lights next. And nobody is tangling anything. I’m not fighting a strand of lights two days before Christmas. I’ll burn this whole house down before I do that.
Carter laughs. Rip pretends not to.
Rip picks up the tangled strand anyway.
Baby, this is… uh… already tangled.
Beth looks up at the ceiling and breathes in through her nose.
Give it here. Both of you step back before I hurt somebody.
Carter tries not to smile as he moves out of the way.
She’s serious.
Rip nods.
Always is.
Beth works on the strand until it finally loosens.
Thank you. Now we’re in business.
They start looping the lights around the tree, Carter steps on the ladder to reach the higher branches. Carter drapes the lights carefully, proud of every section he gets right.
Beth watches them for a moment, something soft moving through her chest.
This. This is what she never thought she’d have — a home, a family, peace.
The tree glows brighter with every loop of light.
Beth sighs
Okay, fellas! You two finish decorating the tree while I get dinner started.
[Carter looking puzzled at Rip]
What's for dinner tonight?
Sausage with peppers and onions and a tossed salad.
Ohhh! That sounds delicious.
Do you need any help chopping vegetables?
No Baby! I've got it. You and your dad finish decorating the tree, you're both doing such a great job.
Carter notices Beth’s “Dad Slip” again but lets it slide.
Beth is in the kitchen trying out a new recipe she found on Pinterest.
[Beth thinking to herself]
Hmmm. I'm hoping this recipe turns out as good as it sounds. Dinner is just about done.
Beth steps out on the back porch to have a cigarette. She's leaning up against the pillar deep in thought. She didn't notice that Rip had stepped into the kitchen and was watching her..
From the doorway, Rip watched her—one arm wrapped around herself, cigarette pinched between two fingers, her gaze fixed on nothing and everything at once. The porch light washed over her in a soft gold, catching the edges of her hair, the faint tremble in her breath.
He knew that look.
The one she only wore when she thought no one could see her.
Beth took another slow drag, eyes drifting out toward the dark stretch of land.
This ranch had broken her in a thousand different ways. It had built her too.
And out here, in the quiet, both truths pressed on her at the same time.
Rip didn’t say a word.
Didn’t want to spook her out of whatever moment she was having.
There were parts of Beth you didn’t touch — you honored them.
He leaned a shoulder against the doorframe, just watching her breathe… watching her shoulders rise and fall like she was holding back a lifetime of memories that wouldn’t stay buried tonight.
Beth exhaled, smoke curling upward as her voice slipped out in a whisper meant only for the night:
Daddy… I wish you could see me now.
Her throat tightened, but she didn’t wipe the tear that balanced on her lashes. She let it fall, quiet, almost relieved.
Rip’s chest ached at the sight — not because she was breaking, but because she trusted the dark more than she trusted people to hold these pieces of her.
[The timer is going off on the stove]
Beth turns around to head back inside and finds Rip leaning against the doorway.
Are you okay, honey?
She says yes, just thinking about my daddy, wishing he was here to see me now.
Christmas feels so different this year because he's not here.
I'm trying really hard not to be sad. I want this to be a good Christmas. This is our first Christmas as a family. You, Me & Carter.
Before she heads back inside, she lets the words echo through her mind one more time.
A family. And for once, she didn’t push the feeling away.
Beth grabs the spoon from the stove to give Rip a taste of the sausage mixture.
[Rip licking his lips]
Ummm. That's good
Baby, here take this and I'll grab the dinner rolls so we can eat.
Beth swings the door open glancing at the sight before her…
[murmuring under her breath once again]
my new house, my family.
her look softens]
She sees Carter sitting on the couch.
She places the dinner rolls on the table, calling Carter over to come eat.
Baby! Come eat, dinner's ready.
They say grace before digging in. Carter's licking his fingers and says,
Wow! This is amazing.
I'm glad you like it, but slow down baby, there’s plenty of food to go around. I guess I do have this whole cooking thing figured out.
Rip chuckles under his breath.
You sure do, honey. This is damn good.
Carter nods enthusiastically, already reaching for another bite.
It tastes like… real Christmas dinner. Like… a family dinner.
Beth’s hand pauses midway as she sets her fork down.
She looks up at him, surprised by how deeply that lands.
Rip notices too — the way Beth’s eyes soften, the way her shoulders ease just a little.
Well, good, she finally says.
Because that’s exactly what this is.
Rip gives Carter a small proud nod, then reaches over and squeezes Beth’s hand under the table — quiet, grounding, his way of saying he sees her, all of her.
Carter keeps eating, happy, comfortable, at home.
For the first time… it feels real to all three of them.
Carter finishes eating, then motions to clear the table of the dirty dishes.
Beth and Rip are sitting on the couch in the living room enjoying the quiet sound around them admiring the blinking lights on the tree.
[Beth smiling softly]
I can really get used to this. I know you're dying to ask me something. What is it?
What do you mean?
Those “Dad” slips. I saw your subtle reaction both times when I said it.
Yeah. I often think back to a time when I said, I didn't want kids running around. But now that Carter is here my perspective has changed. I think he changed both of our perspectives when it comes to that. I'm really glad he's here and I can see the glow in your eye every time you look at him. He's here to stay honey. And…. I could get used to that.
Carter has finished cleaning the dinner dishes. He joins Beth and Rip in the living room curled up in the recliner next to the couch.
He grabs his phone to finish playing the game he started before dinner.
Rip asks what game he is playing?
Guns and Spurs 2.
I wish I had a game console so I can play it on my TV instead of my phone. It has some good graphics on this game that the phone just does not do it justice.
Beth catches what Carter says about the game console and taps Rip on his thigh.
Carter decides to head upstairs to finish his game leaving Beth and Rip alone in the living room.
Well I guess he told us what he wants for Christmas this year.
Yep. Pretty much. So we give it to him at Kacey's or wait and give it to him here.
Actually, I have some stuff for him already at Kacey's. Monica and I went and did some shopping for him and Tate a few months ago.
Wow you started early.
Yeah, I've been really excited about Christmas this year.
The room settles into a soft quiet — the lights blinking outside, snow tapping lightly against the windows. Beth slides closer to Rip, their shoulders touching.
She exhales slowly.
I meant what I said earlier… about this being our first Christmas as a family. I didn’t think I’d ever get here… not with everything that’s happened on that ranch. Not with everything inside me.
Rip turns his head, really looking at her.
You got here, honey. And you didn’t do it alone. You let me in. And you let him in. That’s all I ever wanted.
Beth rests her hand on his chest, fingers lightly curling his chest hairs.
I’m still figuring it out, Rip. All of it. Loving someone the way you deserve, showing up for Carter the way he needs… It scares the hell out of me sometimes.
Rip takes her hand and holds it steady.
You don’t have to figure it out alone. I waited for you most of my life. I can wait while you learn how to breathe in this… whatever this is. Us. Him. This whole damn family thing.
Beth’s eyes soften.
He calls you dad in his head. I know he does. And I’m not gonna lie — watching you with him… it does something to me. Makes me feel like maybe I’m not as broken as I always thought.
Rip leans his forehead against hers.
You’re not broken. And Carter… he’s ours in all the ways that matter. If he asked me tomorrow to be his dad, I’d say yes before he even finished the sentence.
Beth’s voice drops just below a whisper, almost cracked.
Yeah… me too. If he asked to call me Mama again… I think I’d let him.
Rip’s thumb brushes her cheek.
He already looks at you like you are.
Beth swallows hard, then lets her head fall against Rip’s shoulder. His arm goes around her automatically, pulling her in closer.
For the first time that night, she lets herself truly relax into him — into all of it.
Rip murmurs, soft and certain:
We’re doing good, honey. Better than we think.
Beth closes her eyes, letting the warmth settle.
Yeah… we are.
Beth’s awake and finds herself standing just outside Carter's bedroom door watching him sleep. Thinking to herself, “Could I really be a good mom to him given the chance”
Before she knew it she was sitting on the side of Carter's bed. The feeling of his bed shifting made Carter stir just a bit to see Beth sitting there. It didn't scare him, it just brought him comfort….
Good morning, Baby!
Good morning…
Did you have a good night's rest?
Yeah I did, I had a dream.
What was your dream about?
I called Rip Dad..
What did he say?..
I'm not sure I shook it off before he answered because….
Because of what?
I didn't want the same response I got from you..
Carter looks down in sadness…
Beth’s chest tightens at the sight.
Hey… look at me, baby.
Carter lifts his eyes slowly.
What do you mean — the same response you got from me?
Carter fidgets with the blanket, his voice barely above a whisper.
When I called you Mama… you pulled away.
I thought maybe I shouldn’t say it again.
Beth’s breath stumbles. The guilt hits her like a wave.
Oh, sweetheart…
She reaches out, brushing his hair back gently.
I didn’t pull away because I didn’t want to hear it. I pulled away because I didn’t think I deserved it. That’s on me… not you.
Carter’s eyes shine, unsure.
So… you’re not mad I said it?
Mad?
Beth shakes her head, her voice softening in a way it rarely does.
Baby, you could never make me mad by loving me. I just… didn’t know if I was allowed to love you back like that.
Carter swallows.
Am I… allowed now?
Beth’s throat tightens. She cups his cheek.
Yeah… you are.
More than you know.
A tiny smile fights its way onto Carter’s face.
So… what about Rip?
Beth lets out a soft breath.
If you want to call him Dad… you can. He’d say yes before you even finished the word.
Carter’s whole face brightens — a mix of hope, relief, and something that looks like belonging.
Really?
Really.
Beth pulls him into a slow, careful hug — not rushed, not guarded, but open… the way she wished she had been the first time.
Carter holds on just a little tighter than she expected.
Beth closes her eyes, whispering against his hair:
I’m right here, baby. I’m not going anywhere.
Later that afternoon, Beth, Rip, and Carter arrive at Kayce and Monica’s to spend Christmas with the family.
Tate comes barreling down the stairs the second he sees Carter. The two of them disappear back upstairs almost immediately, already laughing.
Moments later, Carter says to Tate, Hey, you want to have a snowball fight?
That'll be fun. Let's see if dad & Rip would want to join us.
The boys run downstairs bundled up for the snow. Tate grabs his gloves, Carter zips up his coat.
Tate and I are gonna go start the snow fort!
He turns to Rip without even thinking—
Hey, Dad… do you and Uncle Kacey wanna have a snowball fight with us?
Everything freezes for half a breath.
Rip blinks.
Kacey smirks.
Beth’s eyes dart toward Rip — waiting to see how he reacts.
Carter realizes what he said a second too late.
Carter (quickly)
Uh— I mean… Rip.
Rip just smiles. A real, soft, proud smile.
Rip
Snowball fight, huh?
Yeah, bud. We’ll be right out.
Carter beams. Tate grabs him and drags him toward the door, ready to play.
Beth watches Rip, quietly moved.
He doesn’t correct Carter.
Doesn't make it awkward.
Doesn’t make it a thing.
Just let the moment sit there.
The boys push open the screen door and step onto the front porch, breath puffing white in the cold air. Laughter still hangs between them from the snowballs they’d been throwing.
Tate nudges him with an elbow.
You did it, Carter.
Carter looks down at his boots, kicking lightly at a pile of snow.
Yeah… I guess I did.
How’d it feel? Tate asks, grinning.
Carter hesitates, shoulders lifting.
It… felt good.
(beat)
But now it feels weird.
Tate shrugs like it’s the simplest thing in the world.
Don’t overthink it. My dad says sometimes your heart knows the truth before your brain figures it out.
Carter lets that sink in, eyes drifting back toward the window where Rip and Beth are helping Monica prepare the plates for everyone inside.
Yeah…
(soft)
Maybe.
Rip and Kacey come outside all bundled up ready to start this snowball fight.
Rip motions Carter over to the porch and gives him a ski mask to put on his head to keep his face warm.
Kacey hollers out!
Let's get this fight started!
Tate tells Carter, you look like you're about to rob a bank.
Rip throws a snowball at Tate’s head..
Hey Uncle Rip, I wasn't ready.
Just then, Kacey hits Rip upside the head with a snowball..
Alright!! That's how we're doing this.. Rip says.
Carter throws a snowball at Tate this time and tables have now turned around.
It's the son's against the father's..
The son’s are hard fast snowballs at their dad's.
Beth and Monica are watching this fight from the kitchen window.
Beth says, the boys are really enjoying themselves out there.
She also says I love how Tate and Carter get along so well. He's never really had friends.
Yeah I agree really Heaven either all he had was the guys at the bunkhouse. I really didn't like him hanging out there because of all the foul language. He picked up on it and was using it an awful lot. We had to break him from that but now since we're not at Yellowstone he's really calmed down.
Yeah the same with Carter he was trying to use foul language but then you have me and Rip… that's a story for another day though.
[Beth lets out a soft smirk]
Hey I caught that Dad slip earlier.
How are things at home with you and Carter now?
Oh, we had to talk this morning. He's calling me Mama now. He told me he had a dream that he called Rip dad but he said he shook it off before rip could respond in his dream because he didn't want Rip's reaction to be the same reaction I gave him when he called me my Mama for the first time. Monica when I tell you that my heart sank to the pit of my stomach when he said that.. because the look on his face in that moment broke me to my core.
Oh Beth! I can hear the pain in your voice. I'm so glad you let that wall down with him because he needs you so much and you need him.
Beth wipes the corner of her eye with her thumb, trying to hide the emotion. Monica notices but doesn’t push.
Before either of them can say another word, the back door swings open and the boys tumble inside in a burst of cold air, laughter, and snow.
Tate kicks off his boots, shaking his hair like a wet dog.
Carter stumbles in behind him, ski mask crooked, snow packed into the folds of his jacket.
Rip and Kayce step in last, both dusting snow off their shoulders like they’d just survived a war.
Rip grumbles,
I swear Tate’s got an arm on him like he’s training for the major leagues.
Kayce smirks.
That’s ’cause he gets it from me.
Beth hands Carter a towel.
Come here, Carter—wipe your face before you melt all over Monica’s floors.
Carter grins, pulling the mask off.
Mom, you should’ve seen Rip get hit. He acted like he got shot.
Rip raises a brow.
Boy… I let you hit me. Don’t get cocky.
Kayce claps Rip on the back.
No he didn’t. Carter nailed him good.
Everyone laughs.
Monica steps forward, handing Tate a cup of hot cocoa.
Warm up before you two freeze your fingers off.
Beth hands Carter a mug too, watching the way he gravitates toward Rip without even thinking—close enough to bump his arm. Rip doesn’t move away; he just nudges him gently like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
Beth catches Monica’s eyes.
Her expression softens… the kind of soft that feels like realization.
Monica says quietly, low enough for only Beth to hear:
He loves him, Beth. Really loves him.
Beth lets out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding.
I know.
Rip ruffles Carter’s hair, then raises his cup toward the group.
Alright—who’s ready for round two after lunch?
Tate and Carter shout at the same time:
ME!
Kayce groans.
What did we just start…
Beth shakes her head, smiling.
A family tradition, apparently.
Monica reaches for the tray of hot chocolate, steam rising from the mugs.
Come on, let’s take this out to the guys. They’re probably freezing.
Beth nods, brushing away the emotion lingering from their earlier talk.
Monica comes in first, carrying a tray of hot chocolate for the guys so they can warm up in front of the fireplace as they start opening their gifts. The boys are stomping snow off their boots, cheeks red, laughing.
Beth is coming downstairs with a bag full of presents for Carter and Rip.
She hands Carter his gifts and then hands Rip his gifts.
[Tate says jokingly]
Wow! Carter, you must have been a good boy this year.
Look what I got this year for one of my gifts?
Coal!
Oh Damn! That cold…
Monica and Beth reflect back to their previous conversation about the kids using foul language.
[Rip taps Carter on his shoulder]
Oh my bad, Carter says.
[Monica hands Beth a gift box]
Beth looks surprised. She wasn't expecting any gifts today.
She opens the box and a small sigh escapes her.
Oh! This is so pretty.
Read the description at the bottom:
Built from love. Strengthen by grace.
Monica, you're so sweet. Thank you.
Kacey motions everyone over in front of the Christmas tree for a family photo.
He sets the timer on the camera and says,
Say Cheese!
The camera snaps.
Okay, one more…Strike a pose
Say, Merry Christmas!
The camera snaps again.
Tate says, this is the best Christmas in a long time.
Beth steps to the window away from everyone.
Kacey notices Rip about to follow and taps him on the shoulder.
Let me…
He waits a moment or two, then approaches her.
You're missing Dad, aren't you?
You noticed.
Yeah, you have a tendency to slip away when you want to spend time alone with your thoughts.
I really miss him, Kac.
Yeah, I miss him too. I know our relationship wasn't the greatest but I miss him too. I never wanted the ranch life. I joined the Navy to get away mostly. I stayed away on purpose.
I left to go to college. I never wanted to come back either. Too many bad memories.
Is that the reason you never talk about Mom?
It's hard talking about her. It hurts too much.
Are you blaming yourself for what happened?
Yeah, you heard Mom say it was my fault.
You were standing right there.
[Beth's voice lowered in sadness]
She wasn't the only one to blame me, either.
Who else blamed you?
Jamie and Dad.
Jamie doesn't count, but Dad?
When, how?
Not in so many words, but yes. Of course it wasn't until I came back home when he said it to my face. He was angry at me about Lynelle.
That woman he was seeing?
Yeah, he jumped on my case about something I said to her, then I brought up Mama and he said, “I forfeited the right to bring up her name to him a long time ago.”
But the crazy thing is, Kac. I love that man even more after he said that to me. It stung for sure. To me it seems as though I had a lot to prove to him because I always felt he blames me for her death. Mom and me, our relationship felt forced. Did I love her? Yeah, I guess. But it wasn't the love I felt for Dad. Do you get what I’m trying to say?
Yes, I get it.
He steps a little closer, softer but firm.
Well… then let me tell you something, and I need you to really hear me.
I never blamed you for Mom. Ever.
And I hate that Dad put that weight on your heart like that.
He shouldn’t have. Not then, not ever.
And how you can still love him the way you do after everything…
I don’t know if I’ll ever understand it.
But maybe it’s not for me to understand.
Just know this: I don’t blame you. I never have.
And I don’t want you carrying that around anymore.
We don’t ever have to talk about this again after today…
But I needed you to know where I stand.
Okay, Thank you for understanding. I couldn't have asked for a better little brother except for that one time.
Please don't bring that up.
Okay, I leave it alone.
We're in a better place now, Rip and I.
Yeah, I agree.
You know, a lot of that friction between Rip and I was dad’s doing anyway. I'm really glad we passed all of that. A lot of times I had to swallow my pride on this ranch because I have a son to raise. He watches everything I do and listens to everything I say, so I have to set a good example for him to follow.
Look at the boys, I love how they get along with each other, and Rip is so good with them.
Kacey walks up and says, Hey bud, what are you guys playing?
Grand Theft Auto Western edition.
Is that one of your new games?
Yeah. All of us are playing. I got 2 extra controllers with my new system.
[Carter turns around and says to Beth]
Hey Mom! Check out these graphics in the game that is so freaking wild. You don't get this on the phone.
Yeah, I see. That's really cool.
Hey guys, let's pause the game. I was waiting for Aunt Beth so I could give her the gift I made.
[Tate pauses the game]
He grabs Beth's gift from under the tree.
Beth is surprised to get the gift. Thank you Tate.
Beth removes the wrapping paper from the gift box and sees that it's something leather inside. It’s a beautiful handcrafted leather keychain with Beth on one side and on the other side; B+C+R
Rip gives her a wink and a high five to Tate. He motions to Beth to let him see it.
That's some nice work there Tate.
Thank you Uncle Rip.
Tate also hands his mom a box.
Here mom, this one’s for you.
Monica opens her gift box and sees that Tate made her a wooden sunflower.
Oh Tate, This is beautiful. Thank you, honey.
The significance of the wooden sunflower is that it symbolizes unwavering adoration and devotion, communicating that his mother is the light of his world.
Carter also made a gift for Monica.
Carter hands Monica her gift.
She opens her box and finds a T-shirt that says World’s greatest Aunt
Oh how sweet Carter. I love it. I will sport it tomorrow while we're out shopping.
Okay guys, we are going to pack up our stuff so we can head home. Carter has more gifts to unwrap at home.
Beth gets up from the couch grabbing her gifts from Monica and Tate. Thank you so much for inviting us over big brother. This was the best Christmas yet.
I'm glad you had a great time. Don't be a stranger.
Kayce and Beth hug. She gives him an extra tug. Thanks for our talk earlier. You have no idea what it meant to hear you say that you don't blame me.
I meant every word. I love you, sis.
I love you more little brother.
Rip and Carter finish loading up the truck as
Monica steps over with one last gift for Carter.
Monica hands Beth a gift for Carter from her, Tate & Kacey.
[Monica whispers in Beth’s ear]
It's GTA Western Edition
[Beth mouths back]
Thank you.
Just then, Kayce, Monica and Tate head back inside and close the door behind them.
Tate tells his dad, Here's your gift dad, it slid down behind the tree. I hope you like it.
I do like it Buddy! I really can use this keychain.
Beth is looking out the window lost in thought.
Rip extends his arm and rubs her shoulder. Beth turns to look at him.
Are you okay?
Yeah Baby! I'm good.
He motions for her to move closer.
Why are you so quiet?
Just soaking everything in. Tonight felt really good. It's been a while since my brother and I really sat down and talked. I'm loving where things are with him and I.
I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. I haven't seen you smile like that in a long time.
I know, right?
And Carter really enjoyed himself tonight too, that's okay see I love how he and Tate get along it's so good for the both of them, they're basically by themselves because all the other guys that were in the bunkhouse are so much older than them.
Yeah, I agree with you there.
But you know what, Beth. Carter really took it hard when John died. It is as if he was so depressed.
I know and then we lose Colby.
Yes, I know. He kept saying it over and over. So much so I shifted the blame on myself which is where it lied because I should have got rid of the horse and I didn't.
Yeah I know. When I found him in the tack room — oh my gosh, he broke my heart.
I was really gentle when I was talking to him after Colby died because he really didn't want to hear what I had to say but I told him that Colby made a choice. He saw you in trouble and he chose to help you and I'm sure glad he did, I’m grateful and you should be too.
Beth turns her head slightly to the back seat and Carter has drifted off to sleep.
That snowball fight wore the boys out. Carter is knocked out back there.
Now, that was really fun. I'm really surprised that I'm not sure.
Rip pulls into the garage.
Hey Carter! We're home, son.
Carter is yawning and saying okay, dad.
Com ‘on baby, help me bring this stuff in the house.
Okay, I got it.
Carter grabs all the gift bags and takes them in the house.
Beth makes her way upstairs to grab the rest of Carter's gifts and places them under the tree before he could see her.
Carter drops all the bags on the couch then goes straight to the bathroom. He's so tired from the excitement at Kacey's.
Beth tells me to come sit next to her for a second. She wanted to tell him something.
Okay Mom, I need to grab some from my room first.
Okay.
Moments later, Carter came back downstairs with a couple of gift boxes in his hand, he sat them on the coffee table.
Rip and I have something for you. We wanted to wait and give it to you here at home.
Okay.
Rip is sitting in the arm chair next to the couch. I want to tell you something first before I give it to you.
Come sit next to me.
[Beth sighs before speaking]
Look at us, Carter. We're a mess, aren't we?
She offers a small, wry smile. Rip’s a convicted felon, I've got a mouth that could curdle milk, and you... well, you came to us out of necessity, not really out of choice, did you?
[Carter shakes his head slowly]
"No, ma'am."
But in the time since you got to the ranch, something changed. The ranch us meaning Rip and I, my dad and even the guys in the bunkhouse. It's about blood and history and promises kept. And what you and Rip and I have built at the ranch and now here... it’s all of those things, but better. It’s a promise we kept to ourselves, too.
She reaches out and gently cups his cheek with her hand, her gaze locked on his.
For months now, you've been a Dutton now a Wheeler. You act like one, you work like one, and you belong here in a way that sometimes feels more real than the ground under our boots. But sometimes, Carter, the government, the laws, the paperwork—they need to catch up to the truth of what the heart already knows.
[She pulls out the envelope.]
Today, Christmas Day, we spent time with family. But Rip and I wanted to finish this day with our family. With a gift that makes everything real, legal, and forever.
She places the envelope directly into his hands.
This piece of paper isn't just about a last name, Carter. It’s about being ours. It’s about a permanent, iron-clad guarantee that you are safe, that you are home, and that you are our son.
Carter accepted the paper, his focus immediately snapping to the name that finalized everything:
New Legal Name: Carter Dutton-Wheeler
He read the words, and the teenage barrier he usually kept up finally cracked. This document was the end of the line, the unbreakable guarantee.
He lowered the paper, silence filling the room. He looked at Beth.
[Carter’s voice barely above a whisper]
"It's done then. No take-backs."
He looks over to Rip, offering a simple, solid nod of acknowledgment, and does the same to Beth. It was a gesture of respect and final, quiet acceptance. A tiny, genuine smile touched his mouth. "Dutton-Wheeler. Yeah. I like it."
Rip looks at Beth, then at Carter. “Welcome to the family, son.”
Rip gets up and he and Carter embrace.
“Thanks Rip!
By now, Beth is in full blown tears. Carter pulls back from Rip only to embrace them both.
Thanks, Mom… This is the best Christmas present I’ve gotten my entire life.
You ain't seen nothing yet, buddy...
There's more, Baby.
There's more? Really?
Rip hands Carter a few boxes, instructing him to open the big one first.
Wait! Let me grab the camera. I need to record his reaction to this one.
Beth hurries off to the kitchen drawer, grabs the camera, and hits record as she comes back into the living room.
Okay… go ahead, baby. Open it.
Carter tears into the wrapping, lifts the lid—
His eyes go HUGE.
No way…
No. Way.
You guys are the BEST!
Guns and Spurs 2.
The full console edition.
Rip grins.
You said the game on your phone wasn’t cutting it. Figured we’d fix that.
This is FIRE!!!!
Carter looks between them, stunned.
This—this is crazy. I don’t even know what to say…
[Rip leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees.]
Just say you’re gonna let me play it too.
[Carter actually laughs, shaking his head.]
Of course, you can play.
[Beth asks out of curiosity]
I have Guns & Spurs 2, GTA - Western Edition & Red Dead Redemption 2
I got the GTA - Western Edition from Monica
But this—He lifts the Guns and Spurs 2 case again. This one… this is the one I really wanted.
I'm going to play all of them but Guns and Spurs 2 is my favorite. Probably because that's the only game I play on my phone.
Beth has stopped recording and put her phone down, watching the joy on Carter's face settle into something softer, deeper, grateful.
Merry Christmas, baby.
Carter nods, swallowing hard.
Merry Christmas… Thank you both so much.
Rip pats his shoulder.
Go on. Get it hooked up before you fall asleep standing up.
Okay. Oh Wait! I almost forgot these are for you two. They're handcrafted because I don't have much money to buy any gifts.
He hands Beth her gift, then hands Rip his.
Beth opens her box to find a picture of her in a meadow.
Wow! Me standing in the middle of a meadow. This is absolutely beautiful, Baby.
You never told me you could draw like this?
Well, I had a little help. I drew the picture but Tate and I worked on the paint colors together. I drew it when we went to the Spring gathering with Grandpa John and put it away. I was trying to decide when to give it to you. I brought my sketching pad and colored pencils in case I got bored. I drew lots of pictures that day.
[Carter lowered his head after mentioning John’s name]
Hey Carter, what's wrong?
I miss him so much. I don't know if I ever told you this but one time John was going out for a ride and he asked if I'd ever rode a horse before. I told him, No. He said for me to grab a horse, he'd teach me. We'd go out riding a lot. When he became governor, he wasn’t around much. And then… he was just gone.
I miss him. That’s all.
After he said that, he looked at Beth.
I bet you miss him too, huh.
Beth nods, her hand coming up to rest against his shoulder. She gently pulls him closer, pressing a kiss to the side of his head.
Yeah, baby. I do.
She keeps her arm around him, holding him there for a moment longer, letting him feel it without needing to say anything else.
He’d always tell me once you start dating, find you a woman like your aunt Beth. She’ll keep you on your toes.
[Beth let out a faint smile, saying just below a whisper]
Awww. Daddy.
Hey Rip? Are you going to open your gift?
Yep. Let's see what we got here?
A wallet. Did you stitch this?
Yep, I'm talented huh?
You sure are son.
[Carter swallows hard before speaking]
I need to ask you something?
Sure what is it son?
Carter glances at Beth before asking. She gives him an assuring nod.
Um… about earlier. At Uncle Kacey’s.
When I called you “Dad.”
Rip and Beth both turn toward him — no judgment, no tension, just open space for him to speak.
You don’t have to explain it, son, Rip says gently.
Carter swallows.
I just… it slipped.
But…
I kinda liked saying it.
Beth’s breath catches.
Rip’s eyes soften in a way Carter has never seen before.
If you want to keep saying it…
I won’t mind.
Are you sure you're okay with me calling you that?
Rip nods once — firm, certain, steady.
Yeah. I’m sure.
Carter turns to Beth, worry flickering.
And you… you wouldn’t mind if I called him Dad?
Beth steps closer, her hand resting against his chest.
If that’s what’s in your heart?
Then it’s right, baby.
Carter’s whole face breaks into a relieved, hopeful grin — like the weight he’s been carrying finally drops away.
Okay…
Dad.
Rip’s breath stutters a little at the sound.
Beth leans against him, whispering softly:
You handled that perfectly.
Rip rests a hand on her back.
We’re figuring it out, honey.
One day at a time.
Okay fellas, let's stand over here near the tree, we need a family portrait to put in our picture frame from my brother and his family.
[Beth set the timer on the camera]
Okay, on the count of 3 say “Family”
1, 2, 3 …… FAMILY!!!
Moments later, Carter flops down on the couch and grabs his controller to start playing another game of Guns and Spurs 2.
Beth and Rip are moving throughout the house.
Rip says, uh - oh Mom’s standing under the mistletoe…
Ohhh! That only means one thing, Mom. You two have to kiss.
Come on over her Baby! Plant one on me right here.
Cater grabs his phone and takes a picture.
Merry Christmas from the Wheelers!
Some gifts don’t come wrapped.
Some just… stay.
