Christmas At The Bickman's

Summary:

When Esme returns home for Christmas with a life-changing secret, Catherine and Bickman face a holiday full of truth, emotion, and new beginnings.

Notes:

PREFACE

This story unfolds during a Christmas that changes the shape of Catherine, Bickman, and Esme’s family in ways none of them expected. What begins as a simple holiday gathering turns into a night of surprises, confessions, and choices that push each of them to grow. I’m releasing it now because the heart of this moment belongs to the season — warmth, honesty, forgiveness, and the kind of love that brings a family closer than before.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The house glowed with soft golden light, the scent of cinnamon and vanilla drifting through the air. Christmas music played in the background as Catherine moved around the kitchen, humming quietly while checking a pie in the oven. She picked up her phone and dialed.

Hey, Josh. I was calling to see if you wanted to come over for Christmas dinner tomorrow. I’m making enough food to feed half of New York.

[laughing]
You read my mind, sis. I was actually about to call you. There’s something I wanted to tell you anyway… mind if I bring someone?”

[teasing]
Someone? Or a special someone?

A special someone. I was going to introduce her sooner, but life happened, and we both got busy. I figured Christmas would be a good time to bring her by and spring her on the family.

Spring her on us? You make it sound like an ambush.

It’s not that serious. She’s amazing—you’ll see.

Well, bring your plus one. You know there’s always room for you here.

Thanks, sis. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Catherine smiled as she hung up. She shook her head, still smiling, before dialing another number.

Hey, honey. What time are you coming home tonight?

Well, I’ve got a last-minute meeting with Dr. Owen and Dr. Manning. Hopefully it doesn’t run too long, but I’ll be home before you climb into bed.

Okay, just don’t make me eat all this food by myself.

[chuckling]
Wouldn’t dream of it.

They hung up. Catherine turned back to her cooking, completely unaware that there was no meeting at all.

Bick stood near the arrivals gate, scanning the crowd. His face lit up when he spotted Esme walking toward him, bundled in a coat and scarf, dragging her suitcase.

[grinning]
“There’s my girl.”

[hugging him]
Thanks for picking me up, Dad. I can’t wait to surprise Mom.

She has no idea. Ready to make her cry happy tears?

[laughing]
Oh, she’s definitely going to cry.

They walked toward the exit together, both smiling.

Catherine sat curled up on the couch, sipping tea, scrolling through photos on her phone.

The front door opened.

[smiling]
Took you long enough—

She froze.

[grinning, luggage in hand]
Merry Christmas, Mom.

Catherine gasped, jumping up.

Esme? You said you couldn’t make it home!

I wanted to surprise you.

Catherine rushed forward, wrapping her in a tight hug, laughing through her tears.

You did. You definitely did.

As she pulled back, she saw Bick standing in the doorway, smiling smugly.

[half-laughing]
Last-minute meeting, huh?

[grinning]
Best one I’ve ever had.

Catherine rolled her eyes but pulled them both in this time for a hug. As she leaned in toward Bick, she whispered,

[whispering]
You’re in trouble, buddy.

[low chuckle]
Worth it.

She swats his arm playfully before hugging Esme again, still smiling through her tears.

They sit together finishing dessert. The laughter fades into a quieter moment as Esme shifts in her seat.

There’s something I need to tell you both.

Catherine sets her mug down, instantly sensing the change.

Alright, sweetheart. What is it?

I’ve been talking to my counselor at school and a Navy recruiter about finishing my degree in the Navy.

Catherine blinks stunned
The Navy?, Esme.

[She looks at Bickman wondering why he's not as surprised as she is]

Did you know about this?

Yes I did.

Why am I the last to know?

I wanted it to be a surprise.

Wow! What a surprise this turned out to be.

Yes, Mom. I’ve been thinking about joining the Navy for a while now. To continue working towards my degree. They have so many great benefits after joining. They need people to help soldiers who struggle with PTSD, loss, and being away from home. I want to help them the way you help people at The Cube.

Catherine’s expression softened with pride but still with worry.

I had some reservations about joining so I reached out to Dad making him promise not to tell you or Uncle Josh. I didn't want either of you to talk me out of it, because I had my mind made up about joining. This wasn't the reaction I was expecting though.

I don’t think I would’ve talked you out of it sweetie but I just got you back and now I have to let you go again. And I feel left out of this very important decision—it really hurts. I don’t even know what else to say.

Bick tried to speak, but Catherine cut him off.

Now isn’t the time. I actually have to get to bed because my big brother’s coming over tomorrow with a plus one—that’s another surprise I might have to swallow my pride for.

[Bickman and Esme say in unison]
Plus one?

I didn’t stutter.
She turned and walked toward the bedroom, closing the door softly behind her.

[quietly]
I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to get you in trouble, Dad.

You didn’t, sweetheart. Your mom just feels like she should’ve been included. Let her rest on it, and we’ll revisit it tomorrow.

Okay.

Catherine walked quietly down the hallway and noticed Esme’s light was still on. She peeked in and saw a folded note on the bed.
She picked it up and began to read.

Dear Mom,
I’m sorry I hurt your feelings by not confiding in you about my future plans. I love you so much, and I just wanted you to be proud of me. I wanted it to be a surprise.

Please don’t stay mad at me forever. I’m going to need you for the rest of my life.
Oh, and by the way—it’s not Dad’s fault. I asked him not to say anything.

Love always,
Esme

Catherine’s eyes filled with tears. Before she could set it down, the bathroom door opened. Esme stepped out, towel-drying her hair, freezing when she saw her mom holding the note.

Mom… you read it?

“I didn’t mean to invade your privacy, sweetheart. I saw the light on.”

[she holds up the note]
I didn’t expect this.

“I was going to give it to you in the morning. I just didn’t want to upset you again.”

You didn’t upset me, Esme. You scared me. I’ve spent so long trying to earn my place back in your life, and for a moment, it felt like I lost it again.

Catherine crossed the room and wrapped her arms around Esme.

You could never ruin Christmas. You are Christmas for me.

Esme hugged her tighter, crying softly.

I’m proud of you, Esme. Always have been.

I love you, Mom.

I love you more.

Catherine moved quietly around the kitchen, flipping pancakes while Bick set the table.

Smells amazing.

Just keeping it simple today.

Esme walks in, tying her hair up in a loose bun.

Hey, Mom. Hey, Dad. Are we opening gifts now or waiting for Uncle Josh and his plus one?

[smiling]
Maybe just one won’t hurt.

Esme tore open a box labeled To: Esme — Love, Mom. Her eyes widened.

Soft pink Beats? Mom, these are perfect!

I figured you could use them when you study—or when you just need the world to quiet down.

Esme hugged her, whispering,

Thank you.

Later that day, A knock at the door.

I’ll get it!

She opened it to find Josh and a smiling woman standing there.

Everyone, I’d like you to meet Melody—my plus one.

Welcome, Melody. Any guest of Josh’s is family today.”

Dinner filled the room with laughter, stories, and warmth.

Everyone had finished eating and it was time to open more presents.

Esme was in awe of all the gifts she received this year. Melody even got gifts from everyone.

As the evening wound down, Josh and Melody gathered their gifts and said their goodbyes.

Catherine turns to Bick and gently tugs his arm.

Come in here for a second.

He follows her into the kitchen.

I owe you an apology, honey. I know you were honoring Esme’s decision by keeping her secret. I’m glad she has the courage to confide in you. To see how comfortable she is with you warms my heart completely. I hope you can forgive me for how I acted last night. I love you too much to stay mad at you.”

“No worries, sweetheart. All is forgiven. It’s Christmas—let’s enjoy it together as a family.”

[laughing softly]
So what do you think about Melody! I can’t wait to see where this goes.”

She seems okay to me, much more down to earth, than Regan, she was a bit uptight, don't you think?

[Catherine teasing]
“Stop it, honey.

They share a laugh as the sound of Esme singing out loud as it carries from the living room. Catherine listens intently with her heart full.

When the door closed, Esme calls out for Catherine and Bickman to come into the living room.

Okay… now it’s my turn. I have one more surprise. It’s for both of you.

She handed them a wrapped box. Inside was a framed photo of Esme in full Naval uniform.

Catherine’s breath caught. Bick’s grin spread wide.

Look at our baby girl — all grown up in her Naval uniform, serving our country, about to set the world on fire.

[laughing]
Dad!

[softly]
Part two of your gift came just as I was about to leave out the door to go catch my flight.

Here’s part two — want me to read it, or you want to read it?

[Catherine still emotional]
You read it, sweetheart.

[Catherine’s voice trembled].
“She got in…”

[grinning]
She sure did. The Navy has no idea what storm is coming their way.”

[laughing]
Dad!

Catherine pulled Esme close.

You’re going to make a difference out there, sweetheart — the same way you changed us here.

[she brushed a tear from her cheek]

Make sure you share this news with your Uncle Josh, okay? He deserves to hear it from you.

[Esme’s smiling through tears]
I will, Mom.

Catherine nodded and looked up at Bick, her smile warm.

Best Christmas ever.

“It really is.”
