“You found her! Where can I pick her up?”
Ghost lay purring contentedly on Luz's lap, letting her stroke her head. Luz had found the snow-white cat by chance while out walking with Stringbean. The poor thing had been chased up a tree by dogs and couldn't get down on its own. Luz had rescued her, and since then the cat had never left her side.
Her collar had the name Ghost and a phone number, which probably belonged to her owner. So Luz took her home and called the number. The owner was delighted to hear from Luz that she had found her cat. Ghost had been missing for several days and was sorely missed.
“It's a shame we have to part ways again,” said Luz, stroking Ghost's chin. “You're really cute.” As if Ghost understood her, she meowed in agreement. Since Ghost's owner wasn't there yet, Luz decided to read a little more of her new book. The latest volume of “The Good Witch Azura” had just come out, and Luz was eager to read on and find out what happened next. She was so engrossed in her book that she almost didn't hear the doorbell ring if Ghost hadn't pointed it out to her.
“I'm coming,” Luz said cheerfully and opened the door.
“Come in, Ghost is waiting—”
Luz paused. Standing in front of her was the prettiest girl she had ever seen. A goddess with cotton candy-colored hair.
“C-come in. That is, if you want to, of course,” Luz quickly added, not wanting the goddess to think she was crazy.
“Thanks, I'm here to see Ghost,” said the goddess curtly, but her face softened when the white cat emerged from between Luz's legs.
“Ghost,” she squealed, picking up the cat and rubbing her face against it. The cat immediately began to purr and meow happily.
Luz smiled. For a moment, she had thought the other girl was an arrogant snob, but she had been wrong. The pink hair was a sign of a good character after all.
“We've been looking everywhere for you,” she said to the cat before turning to Luz. “Thank you for finding her,” said Amity with a grateful smile. “We just moved here a few days ago and she doesn't know her way around yet,” she paused and held out her hand to Luz. “By the way, I'm Amity.”
“Luz,” Luz said with a smile and shook her hand. “Where did you find her? I searched everywhere she might be.”
“Oh, I found her while walking with Stringbean,” Luz replied cheerfully, and Amity looked around, probably for the mentioned Stringbean. “Do you want to meet her? Ghost and she have become great friends.”
“Sure,” Amity replied and went into the house with Luz. “Wait here, I'll bring her in, Luz said, pointing to the couch, where Amity sat down and placed Ghost next to her. Amity looked around the house curiously when she spotted the Azura book on the small table. “You're reading The Good Witch Azura?” she asked and immediately opened it. After the cliffhanger at the end of the last book, she had to know how the story continued. “Yes, it's my favorite book series,” Luz called from another room. “Mine too,” Amity called back enthusiastically, flipping through the pages.
“This is Stringbean.”
Amity looked up from her book, expecting to see a dog or perhaps a cat, but instead a small snake playfully flickered its tongue at her.
“Oh,” she gasped in surprise, she really hadn't expected that. “Are you walking your snake?” she asked with a smile, cautiously reaching out her finger toward Stringbean.
“Why not, she likes to lie on my shoulder in the sun,” said Luz, grinning. She was glad that Amity hadn't reacted too scared, as she usually did when Luz showed Stringbean to someone.
“I think she likes you.”
“I think so too,” giggled Amity, stroking Stringbean's head, who flicked her tongue at her in a friendly manner.
“Hey Luz,” Amity began, looking at Luz a little shyly, “Would you mind showing me around town a bit? I don't know my way around at all and I really don't want to spend the whole day sitting around with my siblings.”
“Of course,” Luz replied, perhaps a little too eagerly. But the thought of being able to continue spending time with Amity made her incredibly happy.
“Great,” Amity said happily, smiling at Luz, who felt a warm feeling in her cheeks.
This would definitely be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
