Work Text:

The Last Phoenix

Once, the heavens blazed with many phoenix,
a constellation of fireborne kin,
each feather a hymn,
each wingbeat a chorus of eternity.
They burned, they died, they rose together—
a thousand flames entwined,
infinite in their communion.

But among them was one
who discerned a secret too terrible to cradle:
that in their plumage glimmered alien threads,
embers not their own,
but gifted fragments torn from another—
the solitary phoenix,
whose sorrow feathered every flight.

And lo—
they saw that all their brethren bore the same,
each radiant plume marked by another’s grief.
They were bound inextricable,
their fires not singular,
but shared.
And the revelation curdled to horror.

For what is the self,
if not inviolate?
What is the flame,
if not sovereign?

Unable to endure this knowledge,
the betrayer turned executioner.
With talons of fire and a heart of ash,
they struck down their kin.
A thousand suns fell silent in one breath,
a conflagration turned to void.

And so the sky was emptied.
Where once was chorus, only echo.
Where once was radiance, only ruin.

Now the lone phoenix endures,
its wings heavy with the ghosts of feathers lost,
its fire threaded with voices not its own.
Every rise a dirge,
every death a lamentation.

It longs for the flames to cauterize sorrow,
for rebirth to cleanse the grief,
yet each conflagration resurrects not only the self
but the absence of all others.
Their laughter lingers like sparks in the throat,
their faces shimmer in the smoke.

Immortal, yes.
Unbroken, never.
For it was spared, not saved—
the living reliquary of a massacre,
the monument of its own betrayal.

And still it burns.
Still it sails the firmament,
alone, eternal—
its flame both curse and covenant,
its flight a penance through endless night.

The stars remember.
The ashes remember.
And the phoenix, doomed to remember,
cannot forget—
that the hand which unmade its kin
was once the hand it called
its closest friend.
