Work Text:
Munich, Germany — Winter, 1935
In 1935, Nazi Germany was firmly under the rule of Adolf Hitler. Since becoming Chancellor in 1933, the Nazi Party had transformed the country’s political, social, and cultural landscape, enforcing strict control and propaganda. The regime emphasized loyalty, racial purity, and obedience.
it all came down to a young man. Named “andre”. He didn’t know much about the regime. He’d heard a few words and seen a lot in the first three years of Nazi rule, but it was only what the public was meant to see. The darker truths remained hidden. Either way, it wasn’t something he usually thought about. So it was a surprise when one day, he came back home after running errands, to see a letter on the kitchen table. Or rather, An enrollment notice.
Andre stared at the letter for a good minute. His eyes tracing over the letters, the words, the sentences. His fingers slightly trembled. Betraying the calm on Andre’s face. He swallowed heavily, and blinked. He didn’t look at his father when he heard his voice. Saying,
“Du wirst Gutes tun, Sohn.”
you will do good, son.
after reading the letter, andre simply set it back down and went to help his mother in the kitchen.
