Chapter 1: Ssangmun-dong

Chapter Text

I was born in Ssangmun-dong, South Korea. I was born M/D, 2004. My upbringing was decent, I guess. My older siblings basically raised me, seeing as our parents didn't give a shit for any of us.

Whatever though, I'm grown now.

I am currently 20 years old and I work at a strip club walking distance away from my apartment. After I pay all my bills and shit, I usually hit up my dealer to get some good shit.

You know what's funny? Me and the infamous rapper, Thanos, or Choi Su-bong, have the same dealer. I know the dude pretty well.

Okay, enough about myself. Let's just go on with the story.

I sat on a bench after work, looking at all the money I earned today. I shoved the money into my pocket and stood up, pulling out my phone to text my friends how much I made today while walking home to my apartment.

Made almost 200,000 won today.

I snicker as I put my phone back into my pocket, entering my apartment building and heading to elevator, only to see that it's broken again. For the third time this week.

Fucking hell.

I grumble as I turn and head up the stairs. Once I reach the fourth floor, I stumble over to my apartment, fumble with my keys before finally opening the door. I enter the apartment and shut the door, locking it behind me. I put my keys on the counter and put my bag down. I sigh as I take off my jacket and put it on the hanger, turning and heading into the bathroom to take a shower.

After I finished my shower, I changed into my favorite pajamas, brushed my teeth and put my hair into a braid so it could be wavy in the morning. I head out of the bathroom and into my bedroom, basically flopping down and falling asleep instantly.

I woke up the next morning to a knocking on my door. I groan as I got out of bed and head to the door, opening it and there was my eldest brother on the other side. Why is he here?

".. What do you want?" I asked, voice gruff from sleep.

".. Dad went to prison." He said, crossing his arms.

I raised an eyebrow, not being shocked at all.

"And this affects me how ?" I asked, tilting my head.

"Well, I thought you overdosed or something, because you weren't answering your texts."

"Wow, so caring. You know I had to work late last night."

"Yeah yeah, whatever. Better safe than sorry."

"Are we done here?"

"I suppose." He said as he turned and walked away.

I sigh as I shut the door and rub my eyes. God, I'm still so fucking tired. I've been working overtime to try and pay off my debts. I suppose I should get ready for the day.

I stumble back into the bathroom, brushing my teeth and unbraiding my hair before brushing it out. I put on my favorite white blouse with a white skirt to pair with it. I put my hair into a cute ponytail before putting on my socks and shoes. I grab my bag, my keys, and my jacket before heading out the door.

I walk around aimlessly for a few hours, going to bet on horse racing, watching a stupid parade, etcetera. Eventually, I found myself in a subway, sitting on one of the benches as I took out my phone and began scrolling through TikTok.

After a couple minutes, a man sat down next to me. I glance at him quickly, scooting away a bit before looking back down at my phone. He stares at me silently for a few moments before he speaks:

"Good evening, ma'am."

I look up at him and look him over. He's dressed in a fancy suit, and has a briefcase sitting on his right. I look back up at his face, and he's smiling.. Creepily.

".. I don't believe in Jesus.." I say, looking down at my phone again.

The man smiled eerily again, before leaning closer to me.

"That's not why I'm here ma'am. Would you like to play a game?"

A game? That doesn't sound suspicious at all. I look back up at him.

".. A game?"

He senses the confusion in my voice and smiles while nodding.

"Yes ma'am. A game. Ddakji, to be specific."

Why the fuck is a random fancy man asking me to play Ddakji? This is concerning me.

".. Why?" I asked, my voice wavering slightly.

He looks down at the briefcase before opening it, showing the two ddakji square and some money.

"If you manage to flip my square, I pay you 10,000 won. If I manage to flip yours, you pay me the same amount. Deal?"

I stare at him for a moment. 10,000 won? Just for playing a game? This sounds like a scam. But whatever, I'll play.

"Fine." I say, standing up as he does too.

I grab the blue square and he places his red square down on the floor. I reel my arm back and slam my blue square down. It didn't flip his.

I sigh as I look up at the man. He's smiling, still. I grumble as I reach into my pocket before he says something disturbing.

"How about you pay with your body instead?"

I freeze, my hand frozen in my pocket. I look up at him slowly.

"W-wha—"

I didn't even get to finish my word before he slapped me across the face. My hand immediately flew up to my burning cheek as my head snaps back to look at him.

"What the fuck?!" I yelled as I glared at him.

"I will take 10,000 won off for each slap."

I stare at him for a moment before dropping my hand.

"You're on."

After a few more losses, I finally managed to flip one. I grinned as I looked up at the man.

"I'll take off 10,000 won if you let me slap you too." I say as I raised my hand to strike him across the face until he grabbed my wrist and stopped me. He put the 10,000 won into my hand and smiled.

.. What the hell is wrong with this guy? I lower my hand and stare at the money inside. Okay, so it wasn't a scam. But I got slapped instead of me having to pay him. What a win.

We both sat back down on the bench, me still staring at the 10,000 won in my hand. He closes his briefcase as he turned to look at me.

"You know, there are more games you can play where you can earn an even bigger sum."

I look up at him, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh yeah?"

He nodded as he handed me a business card with a square, triangle, and circle on it. I flip the card over to see a number.

"We don't have much spots left. I hope to see you there."

He said as he turned and got onto the subway. I hummed as I put the business card into my pocket and stood up, beginning to walk back to my apartment.

Once I got home, I kicked off my shoes and shit and plopped onto my bed, still staring at the business card. Fuck it, let's call.

I call the number and put the phone up to my ear. After a few rings, someone answers.

"Would you like to participate in the games?" The voice asked, low and dark.

".. Yes. I would." I said, my voice determined.

"Please state your name and date of birth."

"Y/N L/N, born M/D, 2004."

"Meet outside the strip club in your city at twelve A.M. sharp. Don't be late. The password is red light, green light."

They hung up the call after that. Okay. Twelve A.M. I don't have work. That's perfect.

I'm standing outside the strip club at twelve A.M. sharp. I don't know what I'm waiting for. I sigh as I see a white van pull up in front of me. The window rolls down to reveal a person wearing a pink tracksuit with a mask that has a circle on it. Weird.. And creepy.

"Password?" The anonymous person asks me.

"Uhm.. Red light, green light."

He nods as he opens the van door. I enter the van and see more people in the van. One of them is familiar. Purple hair, and ridiculous clothing. Damn, Su-bong signed up for this too? I sigh as I sit down next to him, the door closing on its own. I sit there for a second before the air shifts. It stinks, but I'm also tired all of a sudden. I don't remember much, but I was knocked out within seconds.
