Work Text:

“Look, look- edrychwch ar hwn!!” Dewi yanked his brother’s sleeve, prodding at his own mouth with wide-eyed shock. “My tooth is loose!!”

Dafydd looked down at him with his usual icy blue stare. Only a slight quirk of his eyebrow betrayed his surprise. “So you’ll be wanting it out, then?” He reached for Dewi, who flinched away, shaking his head.

“Na, na, na– it’s not ready yet!”

Dewi’s brother towered over him. He was thirteen, a whole five years older, and he had the lean muscle of a farmer. Dewi hated the idea of having to fight him off, so he took an extra step back, just to be safe. Dafydd sneered. “Ffŵl.” He chided. “You think I waited around for mine to be ready? That’s how you get rotten gums. You want rotten gums? Eh?”

“Na,” Dewi repeated shakily. “It’s not loose. I- mistaked it.”

“You mistaked it?” A smile broke across Dafydd’s freckled face. He looked so much younger when he smiled, like a kid Dewi could be friends with, instead of an imposing oldest brother. “Of course you did, Dewi. You don’t know anything.” He ruffled Dewi’s hair, and this time, he didn’t pull away. “You’ll learn eventually. Go talk to Mam, okay? She needs help in the gegin.”

“Ie.” Dewi turned away, careful to keep his tiny hand over his mouth, and made a note to keep quiet about his teeth in the future.
