Post-Nightmare Discussion

Summary:

The morning after a nightmare, you and Vil talk.

Work Text:

It was a nice spring morning when you woke, sunlight filtering through the window. The remnant of the panic from last night's nightmare still kept you sluggish as you sat up. Looking across the room, you could see Rook's empty bed. Neatly made already and with not a single wrinkle to be seen. He had heard your panic in the dead of night despite your best efforts and comforted you. He had then allowed you to stay in his room for the rest of the night. He stayed up for most of the night to keep you company despite your reassurances that you'd be fine if he slept.

You had a decent time last night for the ever-present lingering dread and paranoia. Rook showed you several cool tricks and helped you with some of your homework in between playing games or simply chatting. You wound up falling asleep at some point, this time without nightmares. You were thankful that he had heard you despite your initial dread once you realized it.

Unfortunately, he had things to do as a vice housewarden and couldn't stay forever. You missed his comforting presence right away but tried to pretend it wasn't so. Sitting up and rubbing at your eyes as the sunlight continued to be as strong as ever (you recalled Rook being happy he could watch the sunrise every morning, vaguely), you pulled yourself out of bed and walked back to your room. The last thing you needed was for Vil to be upset because you didn't take care of your appearance.

The room was empty. It was still relatively early and you pondered the idea of sleeping in before remembering Vil's insistence on seeing you early in the mornings. Rushing through your routine so as not to make him wait, you soon left the room towards Vil's. You could already tell he'd be upset to see the half-effort put into your appearance. Bracing yourself for the lecture, you knocked on the door as he taught you. Nothing harsh, yet firm and noticeable.

He called for you to enter, already sounding displeased. You obliged and closed the door behind you as usual, greeted by the sight of Vil sitting at his vanity as he organized his things. Or at least, pretended to. There was never a need to organize it due to his constant diligence in ensuring it remained organized. It was just something he did to mask his anger. You tried to rack your brain to figure out of you'd done something to upset him. You shouldn't have, nor could you find anything.

He glanced at you through the mirror. A cold gaze, "Why are you so sloppily dressed?" He wanted an explanation about more than just that. You could tell by the way his eyes narrowed. Not at your slightly disheveled state or lopsided sash, but looking directly into your eyes.

You didn't dare approach closer or look away. "I had a nightmare, sorry. I'll redo it." Silence. "I couldn't sleep afterwards, so I wasn't at my best this morning."

He leisurely grabbed some container and inspected it before placing it back in the same spot, adjusting it ever so slightly. "And?"

       "I... well..."

       "Speak clearly."

"Sorry. Rook noticed and he helped me with my homework since I wouldn't be sleeping anyways."

"You stayed with him." There was no tone with this statement. He merely stated it as if it were as mundane as the weather.

       "Yes."

He stayed silent, his cold gaze meeting you once again. What felt like several minutes passed before he spoke again. "You stayed with him instead of me."

Ah. He was upset about that. That made sense in its own way. "I'm sorry. I didn't want to bother you."

       "Excuse me?"

"I mean- It was nothing to worry about. I was just frightened of nothing and waking you up would be a waste of your time and an annoyance."

He turned to you, finally looking at you without the use of a mirror. He stood up and strode over to you, towering over you with a look on his face that betrayed how upset he was. "And why, pray tell, would you think you get to decide such things?"

You faltered and stayed silent for a while. Thankfully, he didn't seem to want an answer as he continued on.

"We are dating. As your boyfriend, it is my responsibility to ensure that you do not feel frightened. It matters not whether this is a serious concern or not. Am I clear?"

       "Yes, sorry."

"Good. Now, come here and let me fix your appearance. Thankfully, I have extra time this morning." He led you over to the vanity and ushered you down to sit. As he tended to your appearance you could see that he was still not over the previous discussion.

You sat still and silent so as to not hinder his efforts. And to avoid having that conversation again. He wiped off the meager makeup you applied and adjusted the dorm uniform so it laid neater.

"Rook, as eccentric as he is, would know better than to force you to stay with him. I also doubt the two of you would only do homework during the entirty of the night."

He pulled away from you to grab something, leaving you room to reply without worrying about his efforts. "That's true. He offered to let me stay with him and we mostly hung out." You watched as his grip tightened on what he was holding.

The silence stretched on. You could tell that he was working slower than normal, a deliberate move no doubt. He stopped abruptly, staring at you. "You still haven't fully recovered from the nightmare, have you?"

You hesitated before answering no. He hummed in response before grabbing his phone and typing something. He put it away and moved the various products back to where they belonged, closing any that were in use. You blinked at the sudden change.

"Beauty sleep is important. Since you weren't able to get a proper amount last night, it's necessary you remedy this. Naturally, I do condone the use of naps to replace a proper night's rest, but this once should be acceptable. And since you had a nightmare, it's only logical for me to remain close by to ensure you don't remain in a frightened state."

       "Aren't you busy?"

"Not with anything that can't be rescheduled. I won't be napping anyways, I can do other tasks as you rest. Now come here." He had moved to the bed and gestured for you to come lay down. Doing so, you let him place your head in his lap, gently stroking your hair as he smiled. It didn't take long for you to fall asleep like that
