Teutates was a moniker given to the author of several Fodlanic folk tales and fables from the 11th century. All of his books were left unsigned, but they have all been determined to most likely originate from a small lakeside town in the country of Faerghus, and Teutates was said to be a quiet man who often wrote his stories while fishing at the Teutates lake. It is said that the man was quite reclusive except for reading sessions with the village children, who were most often gifted the first versions of the famed tales that have become a shared experience for all Fodlan children up to the present.

i’ve been following this translator’s work ever since reading his version of the 1200s romance story “Scarlet Flower, Gentle Thorns” by Adrestia’s Bear of Varley (excellent historic queer media by the way, but mind that it is recommended for older teens) and this collection is absolutely phenomenal. my final review is much too long for this comment section so i’ve posted it on my blog here. anyway 5 stars. bravo

On this very day, the Adrestrian Empire of Fódlan was founded. Since then, we have adopted the calendar system that is standard across the globe, but the first of April marks the beginning of the old calendar.
April then was known as the Great Tree Moon, in honor of the elm tree planted together by the mythical figure known as Seiros and Emperor Wilhem I in the former palace grounds in the capital city of Enbarr. Fun fact: At an estimated age of 3000 years, that very same tree is estimated to be the oldest living tree in the continent of Fódlan! Scholars have named it Aymr, after a legendary weapon passed down through the line of Adrestian royalty.
Perhaps you are interested in learning more? The College of Social Sciences has collaborated to bring to you a wide range of talks and activities concerning politics, culture, and society in Fódlan from the past to the present. From Monday to Friday during 10am-8pm, there will also be a mini fair in front of the campus gallery, where a temporary exhibition of restored sculptures from the Garreg Mach Monastery is ongoing at the second floor. We would love to see you there!

@bearnie introverts come in all varieties. i would say that seth reah’s translations are the most accurate and beautiful that i’ve seen so far. it really feels like he understands what the author was saying
given that this is the same author who wrote the lazy fox and the industrious squirrel, which is a bit on the nose (i mean, it is a children’s fable and one of their first i think) but nevertheless gives grace to the fox, this translation showing where their differences rise and fall is much more in the spirit of their work, i believe.

Especially liked your point about how body language and language isn't separate, especially for two socially anxious characters whose worries don't lend well to speech.

Provenance: Purchased from Seth Reah, in possession of Reah private collection since discovery in Myrddin excavation in the 15th century.
Determined to be most likely an accompanying piece to the fable The Wind Caller and the Immovable, and attributed to the same artist who illustrated for The Lazy Fox and the Industrial Squirrel. The piece makes use of mixed media, acrylic paint, beadwork, and embroidery. It also utilizes gems native to the neighbouring continent of Almyra, specifically those popular in the western side bordering Fódlan’s Throat. It uses goldsmithing and weaving techniques that are popular in the western capital city, Zenobia, the traditional residence of the royal court. This piece proves that Leicester conducted trade with Almyra and, at the time the piece is dated, was cordial enough that Fódlanic artisans were allowed to study under Zenobian schools of art. Interestingly enough, the Wind Caller is also a major figure in Srengi mythology.

I don’t take common sense as some irrefutable law, maybe even a rule to break, but I find myself trying to play that card anyway. I feel like laughing but you'll probably call me crazy, if you haven't already. I don't know what's happening to me. This doesn't have to be so serious, right?
I keep thinking about why him, why this, even. I don’t understand it myself. The best I can come up with is this feels like realizing what it feels like to actually have a favorite book after years and years of just telling people I don’t have one or picking a go-to answer that doesn’t feel quite right. Gods, my hands feel like they’re burning. What am I supposed to do with all this?

Claude: Okay, so. This is a hypothetical, alright? Just something I came up with to help explain something to you.
Marianne: …
Claude: None to do with me whatsoever. Just laying that out.
Marianne: …Then I suppose it’s like that story you told me when we were finishing up high school? About the boy who left home?
Claude: Yeah! Exactly.
Marianne: [laughs] Alright, then.
Claude: [laughs] This is why I like you, y’know? Anyhow. Okay. You remember what we talked about when Leonie ducked out to buy stuff from the store? There wasn’t much opportunity to get back to it.
Marianne: Yes.
Claude: Well, sometimes, knowing a person is like reading a book.
Marianne: Huh?
Claude: Just hear me out.
Marianne: Okay…
Claude: You think you’ve got it down after reading hundreds of books. The cover isn’t your usual taste, and honestly, you aren’t expecting much. And for a while, you’re right. It’s just okay. And some of the lines are, ah. Cringe, as the kids would say, but that’s besides the point.
Marianne: [laughs]
Claude: [laughs] At some point, once you’re past the surface, introduction–whatever it is, it starts to get interesting. Maybe it throws you a confusing curveball. You’ve only been reading a few pages as the mood strikes, but now you’re saying, ‘one more page’. One more chapter. Just a little bit to help you doze off, because as much as it is intriguing, it’s also relaxing. You start feeling like you can fit in the pages…that maybe you can find something of a home between the lines.
Marianne: …
Claude: [clears throat] Before you know it, it’s one in the morning and you’re still reading, and you can’t put it down. You’re invested, even if you don’t want to admit it. Something you don’t want to admit even more is that–well, you don’t want it to…
Marianne: ..End. You don’t want it to end.
Claude: …Yeah. Sad, right? You’re kind of scared, and for once, even though you’re always itching to know? You find yourself thinking, just for a moment, that you hope you don’t. Maybe this makes you want to put the book down. Usually, you have enough self-control and awareness to back out when it’s too much, when it’s affecting you. When it’s getting ugly. But now, you can’t stop. Even if you back out at this point it’d still affect you, anyway.
Marianne: Well, I suppose there’s comfort in knowing that once you do reach the end, it’s over…It’ll hurt, but it’ll be over.
Claude: No—that’s not what I’m saying. See, that’s the thing. At some point, you realize that you’re scared for nothing. Because there’s a difference between seeing it through and–[sighs] Listen, there’s no point in dropping it before you can get to the end. Even if you get to that last page, as far or as near in the future that is…if you still want to you can just flip all the way back to the start and read it again, because it’s changed you. It won’t be the same, you’re not the same, and it still won’t be the same the next, next time you read it. Or the next next…next time you read it.
Marianne: [laughs] Claude.
Claude: You can always get something new out of something you’ve looked at a hundred, maybe even a thousand times, if you think about it. People just started debating whether the dragon in one of the fables from Indech’s collection is the same as the one in the Wind Caller just because there’s an unidentifiable smudge on its head and the markings look somewhat the same. It’s a ten-page fable from maybe a thousand years ago. Even science isn’t set in stone. I guess he doesn’t like it when I look at him a certain way because he thinks–no, he wants to think that he’s set in stone, that there’s so little of him that I can see right through.
Marianne: …
Claude: But I can’t, not really. I’m just trying to read him.
Marianne: …
Claude: Mari?
Marianne: I don’t know. My adoptive father always said that you should choose your—Maybe it works for you, but…[whispers] maybe some people just aren’t worth reading.
Claude: Well, okay. You might be onto something there.
Marianne: …
Claude: Maybe they’re worth singing about, instead.
Marianne: [gasp] Claude!
Claude: [sing-song] Art comes in all forms, you know…
Marianne: [laughing]
Claude: It’s up to you, really. Whatever you think is best, I’m with you. But I’m just saying–I don’t think you should let go of something like that before it can even start, Mari. Don’t burn bridges without crossing them, if you have to. No matter what happened to you and Leonie, both of you are still here, right?
Marianne: Yes.
Claude: See?
Marianne: I’ll think about it.
Claude: Good. That was a whole speech, you know. One might even say heartfelt.
Marianne: [laughs]Sometimes I think you would’ve made a better child to my…never mind that. I’m sorry. What about you?
Claude: Oh, sweet Marianne. [laughs] Don’t worry about me. I have a plan.
