Work Text:

Eaglelight padded along the FlockClan border. She was searching for aloe, due to a recent fire that damaged a part of their forest, a few cats had burns. But she was taking extra care and attention to Badgerpaw, who hadn’t recovered yet. The birds above her sang. She would mimic them, still searching for aloe. She noticed its smell, and plucked a few. She only needed the sap, so she didn't need a lot.

Back inside the camp, she cracked an aloe and opened it up. Using a leaf to gather the sap, she placed it carefully on Badgerpaw's flank. He was the weakest of his litter, having been apprenticed late due to a lack of health and size. He was still small enough to be a six moon old kit, despite being almost ten moons old by now. "Ouch! Why does it hurt?" He complained when Eaglelight pressed the sap against his burns.

"You're lucky you didn't burn it too severely." Eaglelight mewed.

"Then why does it hurt?" He asked, sulking into the nest.

"Because it was a burn. Come to me every sunrise and sundown to reapply the aloe."

"...Eaglelight?"

Eaglelight gave a nod of acknowledgement, putting the aloe back in her storage.

"Why were all my siblings named after birds, but I was named after a stupid badger."

"You could ask your mother that?"

"I did. She said its because I look like a badger. I don't! I look more like a robin than Robinpaw does. You were at my kitting, Eaglelight. Why was I named Badgerkit?"

Eaglelight sighed, she had promised Featherclaw she wouldn’t tell him the story until he was a warrior. But she had no way of escaping it now. She sat down and ran a paw across her head to move her fur. "When you were born, your family wasn't sure if you would live or not. There was a point when you were only a few days old, where you almost died. Your breathing was so slow, I had to beg the birds that you would live. Your father had such little faith in you, he didn't give you a name. Remember how Vesperflock was so sick during your earliest memories?"

Badgerpaw nodded, and Eaglelight continued.

"Right, she was recovering from your birth. Her kitting was hard, we almost lost you. I am so thankful we didn't, but you were named Badgerkit, because you were a fighter. You were sick for two moons, you know."

Badgerpaw nodded, and rested his head against the nest. "Thanks, Eaglelight. You helped me so much. I'm Badgerpaw, and I'm gonna live up to my name. I promise."

"I know you will, Badgerpaw."
