Work Text:
To be frank, university was much harder than Peter thought it’d be. And for it to be such a pain and not pay off in the end is another nightmare within itself. You see, Peter had graduated from MIT three months ago and had moved back into Queens with his Aunt for him to find out that looking for a job is hard. He has been unemployed ever since, but that isn’t for the lack of trying. He tried calling and applying almost every day but garnered no actual results. He’s always on edge and always close to a sensory overload because of how stressed he had been for the last couple of weeks.
Looking for a job is hard. Why did no one ever warn Peter that university is a big financial scam?
And Tony definitely definitely did not know about his current predicament. Peter has been avoiding him ever since he graduated. He, Peter Parker-Stark, was embarrassed to be such a failure associated with someone as awesome as Tony.
And it was not an easy feat, he had to dodge calls (“sorry can’t talk rn, I’m busy plumbing, got a bad leak” he texts him), leave his own home when Tony stopped by (“Aunt May, tell Tony I’m out buying food and things... that plumbers get” Peter had aggressively whispered before jumping out the window for his very life “wah- wait, Peter, what plumbers?!”), and cancel lab time (“the plumbing is just never-ending, sorry about that” he texts, “want me to call an actual plumber for you kiddo” Tony replies, “nah, I got this” Peter quickly texted back).
Peter didn’t exactly know why all his excuses had centred around plumbing per se, but he had to roll with it. He had practically dug his own grave with pathetic excuses that he was pretty sure Tony had seen through long ago.
And Peter was right. Tony was expectedly not happy. He couldn’t for the life of him understand why Peter was avoiding him like the plague. Throughout the years, they had become the perfect puzzle that can’t be pulled apart. A father-son relationship was the last thing Tony had expected, but it was the best thing that ever happened to him. And now his son (and his heir, but Peter didn’t know that yet) was acting as if he was a complete stranger and he wanted to know why.
And Tony had a plan.
A very detailed and complicated plan:
“May,” he whined, “why is Peter avoiding me?” Tony had called while panicking about the fact his son didn’t want anything to do with him after three months of practically no contact. He was in his lab surrounded by bits and pieces of metal that was scattered around as he wrecked his brain trying to understand why Peter is doing what he’s doing. Tony’s hair was a mess. And he doesn’t remember when was the last time he ate a proper meal. Or showered.
“Tony,” a disgruntled and irritated voice came through the phone speakers, “it’s 2AM in the morning, please just go to bed. Call me back when the sun is actually up.”
“Wait-“ but May had already hung up on Tony.
That was a terrible plan.
“FRI, what should I do now?” Tony groaned loudly.
“I suggest you sleep sir and call May Parker later in the morning,” FRIDAY replied with a tone similar to one soothing a child throwing a tantrum.
“Don’t speak common sense to me right now FRI,” he grumbled back.
But Tony did finally leave his lab after another hour of unsuccessful attempts to get May back on the phone. He trudged up to his bedroom and found his wife fast asleep, which made a heavy sigh leave his lips. He was planning to retire soon and was contented by the idea that he would get more time to spend with Pepper and see Peter step in and fulfil his full potential. Maybe he’d even have another child and become a one big happy family.
All that he’s missing in this picture was actually getting a hold of his slippery son.
As he grabbed a change of clothes and headed to the bathroom, he thought of another plan. This time he’ll visit a certain someone as Iron Man.
“How’s uni going?” Peter asked as he sat on the edge of a rooftop, his feet swinging back and forth while he snacked on a sandwich from Delmar’s. Peter had graduated a year early, while Ned still laboured away his day studying and stressing out about assignments. Ned had been continuously complaining for the past few months, claiming that Peter had exploited his “genius-smarts” and that it wasn’t fair.
“It’s... going. I have this big project due in like two weeks that I haven’t started on but every time I open a blank doc, I start panicking and decide to take a nap. So actually, uni is going pretty well,” Ned replied in one breath.
“Breathe, Ned. You’re like, a complete star in last minute things. And you’ve also got me, you’re always welcome to ask me for any help. Y’know I’ve got your back,” Peter tried to soothe his worries as he relished in the cool breeze and cozy warmth from the setting sun, treasuring the pink and orange sky that was painting the horizon.
It was the best part of his day, especially after many rounds of job rejections and dead ends. There were buildings upon buildings decorating the skyline, and if he looks to the right of him, he could see the Stark Tower dominating the view. It was his second home that he hadn’t visit for the past few months. And he really missed it.
And he really missed his dad.
“How’s the plumbing kid?” A voice suddenly appeared out of nowhere, making Peter jump up and end the call abruptly. He’d have to remember to text Ned later. Peter was about to slip his mask back on until he realised who the voice belong to. Iron Man suddenly landed behind him with a thud and looked quite intimidating.
Why didn’t his Spider-Sense warn him?
“Uh... it’s getting there,” Peter glanced at Tony warily, who stood there in the full glory of his red and gold Iron Man suit that seemed to glow from the sunlight. His faceplate went up and revealed a disheveled face that was frantically searching his face and body for injuries.
“What’s going on, Pete? Why have you been avoiding me?”
“I- I’ve n-not been avoiding you, I just- just been really busy working and Spider-manning, a-and you know all about the- the plumbing,” Peter spluttered out in a haste. He inwardly winced at how unconvincing it sounded and from the look on Tony’s face, it definitely didn’t get through to him either.
“Would you like to try that again?” Tony’s arms were now crossed over each other, settling into his ‘Not Angry but Disappointed and Tired Dad Look’.
“I’m serious dad. I was really busy and stuff, you know how it is.”
“No, Peter, I don’t. I don’t understand what’s got you so busy that you’ve been practically missing for months. I feel like I’ve been chasing you around all this time and I want to know why. What’s going on?”
“Nothing,” Peter looked away from Tony’s intense glare, “I’m fine. I’m just... going through some stuff.”
“And what exactly is this stuff?”
“Jobs and stuff, Spider-Man stuff,” Peter started to mumble incoherently.
“Speak up, Pete.”
“Ugh,” Peter groaned and nearly stomped his foot on the ground, “fine! I’m just totally unemployed right now and it’s been hard dad! There’s just no job out there and I didn’t wanna face you after being such a failure. It’s embarrassing okay? Are you happy now?”
Indeed Tony was somewhat happy, he felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He had been spiralling all this time because he thought that he had made a terrible mistake somehow and Peter finally realised how terrible of a human he actually was. Hearing Peter’s troubles triggered a wash of relief, but was instantly replaced with worry and the need to cheer him up in any way he could.
“I guess it’s finally time,” was all Tony replied.
Peter’s flushed face that was stubbornly looking away from him, now faced Tony in confusion. Tony sighed and got out of his suit in favour of sitting on the edge of the roof. Peter stood awkwardly not knowing what to do until Tony patted on the space right next to him, gesturing for him to sit down beside him.
“You know this little thing I own called Stark Industries?” Tony started to ask, to which Peter just frowned and nodded. “Well, a few years ago, two years after we met actually. I had a talk with your Aunt about officially adopting you. And as you know, everything went well and you’re legally my kid and all. But what this also means is that, you, Pete, you are the rightful heir to Stark Industries.”
Peter’s head whipped to Tony’s sheepish but warm expression, his eyes scrutinising him and waiting for him to say that he’s joking.
“This is a joke right?” Peter quipped incredulously, “you’re just joking, right?”
“Pete, why would I ever joke about this. I’m old and want to finally retire. And you’re perfect for this job.”
Peter was silent for a long moment. In the distance, you could hear the sounds of busy roads and of people finally heading back home after a whole day of work. Bouts of children’s laughter, smells of warm dinner cooked— if Peter’s life was a movie, this very scene would reveal the amount of love and comfort that can be seen in the space between and around them. It extended beyond the words and assurances being spoken; it was also the unspoken devotion that the father and son had for each other. Peter knew that and to see so clearly the amount of care and thought Tony had for him, that were years in the making, made him feel so full of indescribable affection that he had craved after Uncle Ben’s death.
Peter wonders if Tony understood the huge role in his journey to recovery, in his understanding of his own self-worth, and that perhaps, he does deserve love and shouldn’t be afraid of it. Tony just gives and gives as if it is required of him, as if this fate was written in the books and he was just playing his part. No questions asked.
Peter wonders if Tony fully understood how much he loved him, his jokes, his heart, words, hugs. There’s just so much to love about him but Tony was sometimes blind to all the good he possessed.
“Kiddo, talk to me. What are you thinking about?”
“That... you finally admitted you’re old,” Peter grinned and Tony gave him a soft punch to his shoulder in reply. But then his face turned serious as he says, “but, dad, I’m a nobody. I can’t run a whole company, let alone the, with emphasis on the the, the Stark Industries. That’s like crazy, who would want that! Who would want me?”
“Kid, you are Peter Parker-Stark and you’re a genius, like me, but not only that, you’re better in every way. Your heart, your goals. Pete, at your age, I was wasting away without purpose. But you, at the age of twenty-one, are out there fighting for your own justice and beliefs,” Tony wildly gestured at Peter’s Spider-Man costume he was wearing, “you have gone through so much from young until now, but you came out so much stronger and so stubborn to make sure that everyone is safe albeit you sometimes forgetting about the safety of your own life, but that’s a talk for another day. The point is, Pete, I would be so honoured and so proud to see you take over Stark Industries, because you deserve it.”
Tony’s warm hand settled on Peter’s back, who immediately shifted closer to him and planted his head on Tony’s shoulder. They both had their eyes set on the darkening sky, not quite able look at each other. Especially Tony, who still finds it difficult to do feelings sometimes.
“You’re my son and you’re completely capable to do so much good.”
Peter felt like something was stuck in his throat as he croaked out, “thank you, dad.”
Tony just hummed and a hand reached out to play with Peter’s messy soft curls, “just saying the truth, tesoro.”
“But... how about Spider-Man? I don’t want to stop doing that.”
“Don’t worry, I’m not forcing you into anything kiddo. You can take your time to think about it.”
“May I be both? An heir and a superhero?”
“Pete, what exactly do you think I’ve been doing the past twenty, thirty years?” He rolled his eyes at the audacity of such a question. Tony was a billionaire genius and Iron Man, come on, he can’t get more cooler than that.
“I don’t know, wasting away in a lab?” Peter’s smirk was so wide yet innocent that Tony almost smiled.
“Are you asking me to ground you? Because I legally can, if that’s what you want,” Tony bit back teasingly.
“Dad,” Peter whined, “that’s literally abuse of power. You can’t ground me like that.”
“Well, I think it’s within my right. So try me again kiddo.”
Peter laughed, “fine, fine. To be honest, I don’t think I need to think so much anymore.”
“You have an answer already?” He stopped playing with Peter’s hair to finally look at him and gauge his expression. Peter looked sure and determined.
He nodded, “if I can use whatever resources and influence I have for those who need help, then why would I pass that opportunity. I think it’s my responsibility to not waste it away. I wouldn’t wanna disappoint you.”
“It doesn’t have to be your responsibility, kid,” Tony’s voice was soft and gentle, “you can just be an ordinary office worker, or even just an extraordinary Spider-Man, and I’d always be there to back you up and be proud of you in the sidelines. Nothing you do would disappoint me. Nothing.” He added for emphasis. “Unless, you decided to work for Oscorp, then I might need to rethink a few things.”
Peter ignored the jab and just looked at him earnestly, “but I wanna do this. I wanna help people.”
“Then nothing’s stopping you kid, you’re the rightful heir to everything I own and frankly I’ve been waiting for you to take over so I can finally take a stress-free vacation.”
Peter snorted at that, “as if you haven’t practically retired ever since mum took over.”
“Wah- hey Pete!” Tony’s face was the perfect picture of mock horror and disbelief. Peter could only laugh at that.
“Then...” he paused as he mustered up the courage to say the next few words, “dad, I officially accept your job offer.”
“Good,” he held out a hand for Peter to shake, “you can start whenever because you’re the boss.”
Peter shook his hand, solidifying the beginning of the handover of Stark Industries— one of the most influential and powerful companies in the world.
“Wow,” Peter whispered in awe, “I’m gonna be a boss.”
“You’re already the boss of my heart, Petey,” his hand back at Peter’s hair.
Peter made a face, “dad, that’s so cringe and gross. Never say that again.”
“Can’t and won’t promise anything, boss.”
When Peter headed back home that night, the smell of burnt food wafted through the apartment and instead of blanching, he just grinned at the familiarity of it all. May somehow never managed to get a recipe right, except maybe a classic bowl of cereal. But that’s just one of the many things that Peter loved about May.
“Hey, Pete!” May called out from the kitchen, sounding apologetic, “I think this dinner’s not going the way I wanted it to go.”
“It’s okay Aunt May,” Peter gave her a hug and awkwardly cleared his throat, “I... I also have big news, I’m taking-“
“-taking over Stark Industries?” May supplied gently.
“Yeah exactly- wha- wait what,” Peter’s eyes widened in shock. “How did you know?”
“Tony came to me to ask a few months ago for my thoughts and permission to allow you become the heir of his empire. As if that man needed permission, he knows very well that you’re as much his son as you are mine. And of course, Pete, if anyone was to become his heir, it would be you.”
Peter’s mouth opened and closed a few times, unsure of what to say, “I... sometimes wonder if I deserve this.” He finally mumbled back.
“Pete, you deserve the world,” May made her way over to give him a big warm hug, “the world and so much more.”
He leaned into the hug and gave a small laugh, “I think you’re being biased.”
“And I think you’re underestimating how good, smart, and amazing you are. I’m so proud of the person you’ve become, and I know your mum and dad and Uncle Ben are proud too. I know it with all my heart.”
Peter felt tears forming in his eyes, threatening to spill, “stop it, May” he whined, “you’re gonna make me cry.”
“Oh baby, there’s nothing wrong with that, cry as much as you need, I’ll be right here.”
And they stayed like that for a few moments, as Peter cried (happy) tears and May rubbed his back in comfort.
“So,” Peter started to ask after spending a whole day at the lab with Tony, “how exactly do you run a multi-million-“
“Billion.”
“-sorry, billion, company?” Peter asked as he flopped down on the living room couch and stared at the white ceiling. Tony was at the kitchen making coffee, the smell of its crushed beans wafting through into the living room.
“...”
“Dad?”
“Dunno, ask mom.”
“You’re hopeless,” but he had a wide grin splattered on his face as he lightly shook his head.
The last few wisps of sunlight has now disappeared and was overtaken by the night sky. Peter’s stomach loudly grumbled, he clutched at his stomach in surprise as he finally noticed his hunger.
“I hear someone’s hungry,” Tony quipped with an amused tone, “FRI, get our usual pasta order over.”
“Got it, boss.”
Peter called out from the couch, “dad, can you get me the skittles and a coke?” before turning the TV on and loudly blasting a dramatic show.
“Pete! Where do you keep the skittles!” Tony had thrown open all the cabinets and couldn’t find the one snack he was seeking for.
“Dunno, ask mom.” Was Peter’s dead-panned reply.
“Pete!”
“So,” they stood in front of a large wooden double door, “here’s my office.”
Peter rolled his eyes “this isn’t my first time here, dad.”
Tony chose to ignore that and instead quipped, “Hi Karen, can you get me a less sarcastic kid?”
Peter’s mouth gaped open when she softly replied, “no, sir, I’m unable to complete that request.”
“Karen? What is she doing in your office?” Peter asked.
“Well, I’m giving mine to you. This is all yours now,” Tony grinned and suddenly had an armful of a hyper kid that hugged him tightly.
“Thank you,” Peter’s voice was muffled as his face was squashed against his dad’s chest.
“Jeez kid,” Tony grunted, “you almost knocked the wind out of me.”
“Dad,” Peter glared at his dad’s grinning face, “I’m being serious.”
“No need to thank me,” Tony ruffled his hair, “this was always gonna be yours.”
Tony took a step back and dramatically waved his arms around at the large room, “And since it’s now yours, I thought we could spruce things up a bit, make it more Peter-fied.”
Many paint buckets decorated the office, carelessly placed on the floor. A pungent chemical smell hung heavily in the air but neither the smell or messiness did anything to tamper with Tony’s and Peter’s excitement.
As soon as Tony stated that Peter should change up the office, Peter had insisted that they needed to go to the nearest paint store and get as many colours as possible. And Tony couldn’t say no to his son’s pleads, which was the usual outcome.
That’s how the office currently resembles a paint store rather than an office.
“So what’s your first order of business?” Tony asked while munching on a snack.
Peter mindlessly painted a small black spider on the walls with his dirtied finger.
“I was thinking of something that can help to brighten this place up, it’s a little boring right now.”
Tony just hummed in agreement. He was resting on the office chair, with his legs propped up on the wooden desk as if he owned the place (technically, he did).
“I was thinking blue and red walls would help,” Peter beamed at Tony who’s jaw dropped.
“Pete,” Tony stood up abruptly, ”this isn’t a Spider-Man headquarters, please let’s not do that.”
“Is this my office or yours?”
“Yours, but-“
“So then I want blue and red walls.”
“But Peter,” his face was a perfect combination of disdain and disgust, “it isn’t tasteful, how about we leave the walls alone and we can get some sort of red and blue decorations, maybe a vase with flowers of some kind or-“
“Nah, blue and red walls,” a stubborn look was carved out on his face.
“But-“
“Blue. Red. Walls.”
Tony’s shoulders fell in defeat, “Sounds good to me,” he sighed.
By the time they had somewhat finished painting the walls, night had settled in and the arched windows was a peaceful picture of city lights and distant cars.
“I’m exhausted,” Tony let out a loud yawn as he laid down on the newspaper-covered floor. He expected a response, but the office was suspiciously quiet. Tony wearily sat up.
“Pete?”
No answer.
“Hey, Pete!” His voice was raised to an almost yell.
A sudden attack of cold paint splattered at the back of his shirt, Tony felt a few drops on his neck drip underneath the shirt. He immediately rolled away and gave the meanest glare he could (which wasn’t that mean) to his smirking son who held a half empty bucket of paint.
“Peter Parker-Stark!” He shouted as he grabbed his own bucket for defence and attack. “You’re so gonna regret this.”
“Bring it on,” Peter cheekily grinned, which melted Tony’s heart a little but he wouldn’t admit that because that would mean admitting defeat.
Tony waited for his opportunity as they circled around the room, watching for any weakenesses. Peter was giggling every so often which, quite frankly, distracted Tony because he loved hearing his son laugh.
Tony soon saw his opportunity and immediately took it by throwing most of the paint in Peter’s direction.
Peter avoided most of the damage by jumping and sticking to the ceiling.
“That’s cheating!” Tony huffed.
“It isn’t cheating when there were no rules in the first place.”
“Okay then let’s call it unfair.”
“How is it unfair when you’re literally Iron Man!”
“That doesn’t even make sense when I’m not even in my suit.”
“Well, technically you’re kinda wearing a suit.”
Tony rolled his eyes so hard that he was surprised it didn’t fall out of its pocket, “don’t be irritating on purpose.”
“I’m just stating facts, dad. And anyways, it’s not like you can’t call your suit any time. It’s literally within reach anywhere in the world.”
“This is a paint fight. Why would I call my suit for that?”
“That’s your loss then, sometimes you gotta think about strategy.”
“Peter, honestly! Come down from the ceiling so I can get back at you properly.”
“Nope,” Peter popped the ‘p’ as exaggeration.
“Don’t make me call my suit!”
“And what about it?”
“Don’t make me call May!”
“I’ll just say you’re bullying me so-“
“Boys!” Pepper’s voice rang out across the office.
Both of them went quiet and sheepishly looked at Pepper. She stood by the door with her arms crossed and a resigned look etched on her face.
“What are you boys doing?”
“Re-decorating,” Tony blurted while Peter said “Paint fight” at the same time.
Pepper just sighed.
“Please clean up. Dinner’s ready and I don’t want the food to go cold.”
“Okay, mum.”
And with that, Pepper left.
The boys quickly moved to comply with her request (because Pepper can sometimes be scary).
Peter :)
@peterpstark
I have an important announcement coming soon!!! Also, look at how clingy my dad is.
[attached was a selfie angled from above, showing Tony completely passed out with his head snuggling into Peter’s chest. He was hugging Peter tightly as if he’s a teddy bear. If you looked closely, you could see Tony slightly drooling too. You can see Peter’s bright sunny smile and underlying smirk at the whole situation, his face upfront at the corner of the picture]

All conversations came to a halt as soon as Peter ran in. He could smell the stale coffee and strong cologne that insistently poked at his nose, signalling to him that the board members had been waiting for him for a while.
“Peter!” Tony stood up and quickly went to Peter’s side. “Why are you covered in blood?”
“Uh you see, I was...” he glanced at the board members who were intently looking at him, “I was mugged on my way here and I just managed to get away and I’m so so sorry I’m late for my first meeting with everyone, this is so embarrassing.”
“Peter. This meeting doesn’t mean anything if you’re practically dying!” Tony frantically scanned Peter’s face and started to look for other injuries.
Pepper now stood up and headed over towards the father and son. She addressed the members first, “Our apologies, please excuse us. We’ll officially start this meeting in half an hour.”
“I apologise for the delay, I hope I’m not taking up too much of your time,” Peter piped in remorsefully.
There were murmurs of “no worries”, “we understand” and a very loud disgruntled “jeez, Pete, you’re bleeding and still apologising” from no other than a scowling Tony himself.
Pepper dragged the boys out of the conference room before the duo started their loud banter in front of the board members.
“What did I say about brushing off your injuries?” Tony instantly questioned as soon as they were out of earshot.
“I swear it looks worse than it is- ow ow ow ow!”
Tony had pressed on his injured side.
“Are you lying to me now?”
“I’m not lying, I-“
“Have you seen yourself in the mir-“
“But I didn’t wanna cancel the meeting because-“
“You’re going to be the CEO! You own Stark Industries now! You can turn up ten hours late and nobody would care! You have to take better care of yourself. I thought you’d already know this by now.”
“But what kinda CEO does that!” Peter argued back.
“The Stark kind. And the you kind, you’re bleeding out and you still deci-“
“And that’s why I took over and became the boss,” Pepper cuts in before the argument became even more heated, “Tony, please breathe before you combust. Peter, honey, let’s get you to the bathroom and I’ll get you a change of clothes from upstairs.”
They both quickly moved to complete their tasks with a grumbling Tony behind. One quick wash, a concerned Tony checking Peter for any serious injury, and a clean suit switchover later — everyone was ready to head back into the conference room with five minutes to spare.
The most influential family in the world walked into the room and the members quieted out of respect. Tony and Pepper sat on either side of Peter who was nervously playing with his hands under the table, before Tony started to address everyone.
“We called for this meeting because we would like to officially announce that Peter will be in a transitionary period to step in as the heir of my company. He will be trained under myself and Pepper of course and during this period, he will be attending all future board meetings,” Tony paused to gauge their reactions. Most looked accepting of the idea, a few were apprehensive.
“Will he take complete control of the functions soon?” A member asked.
“No, this will largely still be handled by me until Peter is fully ready to take over,” Pepper answered.
Peter chipped in, “my training will last at least a year, and more if needed. Behind the scenes, I’ve always been involved in research and development so I have an extensive understanding of our products. I’ve also built a relationship with our board of directors over the years and we have a good rapport.” Peter can physically see the board members become more comfortable and assured by the second. Tony and Pepper had proud looks on their face as they listened to their son.
“I would like to assure everyone that I’m not planning to rush this handover. I fully understand that this will take time and during this time, I will earn your trust that I have the capability and capacity to handle this company. I do not take our company’s influence and my position lightly. Please allow me time to show you that what I say are not just words, but I will do my best to uphold them.”
Tony placed a warm hand behind Peter’s back.
“I have complete faith in my son.”
“We look forward to seeing the work you do,” a member said. All members nodded in agreement.
“Thank you, and I look forward to working with everyone,” Peter replied.
The meeting slowly came to an end and Peter officially went for his rounds to personally introduce himself to each board member. Tony couldn’t quite hold back the proud (smug) look as he watched his son interact with them. Before his very eyes, the future of Stark Industries was starting its new chapter with Peter leading the story.
If he was alone, he would honestly cry at the image. His nerdy young boy had grown up to be a confident nerdy young man.
And soon, the world will also see how amazing and nerdy Peter is.
The penthouse was quiet except for the soft background music, something classical playing, and for the sizzling pans in the kitchen. Tony was busy cooking up pasta, the smell of tomatoes and meat wafting through the space. Peter just reached home and was tiredly dragging his feet all the way to the couch, until he flopped onto it. Tony glanced at Peter before continuing to chop his mushrooms.
“So how was work, Pete?”
Peter only groaned in reply.
“Where’s Pep?”
Peter made an unsure noise.
Tony got the signal that Peter needed time to recuperate so he kept quiet as he did the finishing touches for dinner. He grated some cheese and sprinkled a generous amount onto the pasta sauce. Next in business was to tear some parsley and sprinkle it on top too.
“Pete, could you help set up the table?”
There was a pause before Tony heard movement and the clinking of plates and cutlery. Tony carried the pasta sauce and placed it in the middle, Peter was just behind with the pasta itself. They sat down and began tucking in. After two plates of pasta in silence, Peter finally felt energised and spoke up.
“Thanks, dad, for dinner. It’s so good.”
“Glad you liked it, tesoro.”
“This was so needed man, after the long day at work,” he took a big bite before continuing, “I did a minor miscalculation at work regarding our finances for the board of directors’ meeting and wanted to kms. Luckily mum caught it and corrected me.”
“That’s normal Pete, it’s okay to have a few mistakes here and there, especially since you’re still learning the ropes. I’m sure you did awesome for the majority of the presentation.”
“I guess, but I wish I didn’t make that mistake. What if everyone thinks I’m stupid?”
“The son of Tony Stark, stupid? There’s no way.”
Peter just grunted in response.
“You tried your best and that’s what matters,” Tony reassured him again, “how are you feeling for tomorrow? It’s a big day. You nervous?”
“Will you be there?”
“Every step of the way.”
“Then nah, I’ll be fine.” There was no hint of hesitation or uncertainty. Peter had absolute faith in Tony, and Tony had absolute faith in Peter. Their bond was unbreakable.
“If you need me up there, I’ll come up at any point,” Tony reminded him.
“I know.”
They continued to eat in silence before doing the dishes and deciding to watch a movie at the living room. Both of them fell asleep on the couch together, and that’s how Pepper found them an hour later when she arrived home. She gave a small smile at the sight and placed a blanket over them.
She couldn’t help but take a moment to relish the moment. She always wanted a small and happy family, and right in front of her, was her wish come true.
The next day arrived and so did Peter’s first public announcement, which was about to begin in a few minutes. It was to officially share to the world that he was soon stepping up in Stark Industries. He could hear the excitement bustling from the press outside.
Tony was beside him and fussing with his tailored black suit. Pepper was saying words of encouragement. May was quietly there to strongly hold his hand that was clammy with nervous sweat.
And Peter was slightly overwhelmed but ready to finally take the stage.
An announcement rang out that the press conference will start in a minute.
“You got this, Pete,” Tony firmly said, “if you need any of us, just give us a shout and we’ll be there in a heartbeat.”
May squeezed his hand, “no matter what happens, I’m so proud of you.”
“We all are, honey,” Pepper reassured him.
“Thank you for everything guys,” Peter squeezed May’s hand back and smiled at his family that were looking at him with so much pride and love, he almost had to look away.
The announcement asked the audience to quiet down and Peter made his way to the platform to begin a new chapter in his life.
He looked back at his family, Tony giving him a double thumbs up, before going up the platform. The bright lights immediately hit him, along with about a hundred curious faces who was watching his every move. Peter finally settled at the podium and cleared his throat, moving closer to the microphone once he was ready.
“Good afternoon, thank you for taking the time to be here today,” Peter started, “my name is Peter Parker-Stark and today’s press conference is to officially announce that I will be stepping up in Stark Industries as the rightful heir.” There were murmurs from the crowd, and a shout of support from Tony Stark of course.
“Before fully taking up this position, there will be a transitionary period as I learn the ropes. I want to make a promise to you that I will do my due diligence to ensure that I do this handover justice. With the guidance of Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, and with the support of my very capable team, I am confident that the future of Stark Industries will remain bright.”
Peter paused to gather his breath before continuing, “currently, I do have plans to create technology that encourages sustainability and technology that supports non-violent self-defence, along the lines of safety measures. I believe both are vital for the community as we can observe an urgent need for climate action and we also see an upward trend of crime in many cities. I want to position Stark Industries as a corporation that takes accountability and as a corporation that actively pushes for responsible actions, practices and products.”
There was another wave of murmurs across the crowd, but this time around the murmurs sounded more positive.
“I’ll pause here for any questions before we end off this announcement.”
“How can we trust that you know what the people needs in terms of safety?” A reporter asked.
“We will, uh, ensure that any products that will be released is backed with thorough research and testing. This also means that we will ensure that the- the products are relevant to what the people’s needs are for safety and-“
“But you sit there in your ivory tower with bodyguards and top-notch security, how do we know you truly know what our needs are? The needs of the common people?” Another reporter interjected, and a quiet sound of agreement made its rounds.
“I assure you that before, uh, having Tony Stark in my life and taking the Stark name, my environment was very different. This has… grounded me and will continue to ground me as I move forward because I’m fully committed to support my community in any way such as technologies for non-violent self-defence. I believe it’s not only my responsibility to do so, but it‘s a basic necessity that should be accessible to everyone,” Peter tried to reassure, glancing at Tony who gave him a nod of encouragement with his response.
“But what do you even know? Us common people have to struggle everyday, especially those in unsafe neighbourhoods. We all don’t live in gated communities, we all don’t have bodyguards, and we all don’t have money to buy your products. What makes you so sure that you are really committed to this cause?” A reporter quipped. He sounded sceptical and not very forgiving.
Peter nodded in acknowledgment of the question, “I… I understand where you’re coming from. There is this disconnect between different communities and their social classes. I would like to take this moment to acknowledge the disconnect and socioeconomic gap that reiterates the inequality in many aspects and spaces. This very gap was what pushed me to ensure that we drive our products, especially the price-point for safety-oriented items, to be more accessible for everyone.”
He watched as people’s faces were painted with mistrust and uncertainty. And Peter understood why from their perspective — here is Tony Shark’s son/heir practically encouraging nepotism and preaching that he understood their needs as he pockets the profits. He was determined to reassure them and the community that he and Stark Industries will be a stronghold for them.
That Stark Industries is for the people and not just themselves.
“I guess what I’m trying to say is that I hope I can step up and fill the big shoes my mother and father has left behind. They have always been passionate to- to make a difference for the community. And that, well… I guess what I’m trying to assure you is that I take this responsibility seriously and am committed to it by fully embodying the principle that everyone should have access to basic needs and have safe lives and that…”
He paused and wondered if what was about to come out of his mouth was going to be taken well. Peter saw his family showing their support in the corner of his vision and decided that it was the right move, “that I will always be one for the people because,”
He looks at Tony who gave him a small smile.
“I am Spider-Man.”
Chaos. Absolute chaos ensued.
Questions were being thrown at Peter left and right. The crowd was so loud, Peter wasn’t sure he could even hear his own thoughts. Many pictures, which felt like a million, were being taken of Peter and of his family who was at the side with their jaws dropped wide open. Tony face-palmed so hard, he was sure he left a mark.
Like father, like son.
