Work Text:

The night sky is truly a wondrous thing to behold. Stars of all shapes and sizes shine brightly, filling the sky with beauty. A gentle breeze sweeps through the grass, bringing with it a pleasant warmth. Yeonjun sits there, basking in the glow of the stars, and he is at peace. The worries and stresses of life seem so far away here, and the only thing he thinks about is the light of the stars. The grass beneath him feels soft and inviting, and he leans back against the trunk of a nearby tree. Waiting for the meteorite shower to begin.

“Oh hello. I’m Choi Soobin, just call me Soobin though. Are you waiting for the meteorite shower?” a sudden voice says, breaking Yeonjun out of his trance as he looks up at the stranger.

“Evening Soobin. I’m Choi Yeonjun. Indeed, I am waiting for the meteorite shower, how about you? Are you here to watch the stars as well?” Yeonjun greets, smiling as he pats the patch of grass next to him, gesturing for the taller one to sit.

“I’m also waiting. I have a deep interest in astronomy, especially meteorites and shooting stars. It amazes me how such small things can create such a masterpiece in the night sky” Soobin says, eyes widening as the moonlit hit the older’s face, brightening his appearance. In one word, Soobin was ‘ mesmerised ’ by Yeonjun.

“Let’s watch the meteorite shower together then” Yeonjun suggests.

Soobin nods as he sits down beside the elder, side by side, waiting for the endless shower of bright shooting stars just lighting up the dark night.

(2 months later. Yeonjun & Soobin are very close friends)

On a particularly cold winter’s night, Soobin texted Yeonjun.

sb: hey hyung. You free?

yj: yo. I’m free, y?

sb: can you come to meet me and watch the stars tonight?

yj: ofc, you know i can’t say no to star gazing

sb: but it’s cold

yj: but it’s star gazing

sb: ok, meet me where we first met

yj: ok

Sighing, Yeonjun puts his coat on and grabs his telescope, heading towards the park.

He arrives and greets Soobin. Before Yeonjun could say anything, Soobin brings their lips together, ending the long awaited nervous feeling. The elder’s eyes open wide as he looks at the younger one with utter confusion.

“Hyung, I know this is sudden, but I’ve been in love with you the moment I set eyes on you. You are like my moon, you always brighten the darkest of days. Every moment has been so fun because you’re with me. We both love astronomy and I would love for us to look at the stars together for the rest of our lives. Please, be my boyfriend?” Soobin confesses, looking at Yeonjun with sincere hope.

Yeonjun smiles as the moonlight hits his face and Soobin falls in love all over again.

“Of course” Yeonjun answers as he wraps his arms around the taller one.

“I love you, now and forever. I will stop loving you when the stars die” Soobin promises, as he kisses the older on the forehead.

The two males stand together in the winter night, withstanding the cold snow as the stars come shooting down.

(2 months later)

“Your eyes are so pretty. They’re like bright galaxies” Yeonjun gushes as he stares into the taller one’s eyes.

Soobin turns bright red, not really knowing what to do or say. “I–I-I, thanks hyung” the taller one manages to stutter out.

“You’re so cute” Yeonjun compliments, pinching the taller one’s cheek.

Soobin then finds himself blushing even more and falling even harder for his boyfriend.

“Oh look, the ‘one dream’ comet is approaching” Soobin points out as the older turns around, staring into the night sky.

Both males stare into the endless sky, wishing on a shooting star to be together for an eternity.

“Let’s make a wish” Yeonjun suggests, taking Soobin’s hand in his.

The both of them close their eyes and wish upon a shooting star.

‘I wish to stay with Soobin for an eternity”

“I wish to be with Yeonjun hyung forever, until death do us apart”

--------------------------------------

(2 years later. Soobin is 25 and Yeonjun is 26)

“Hyung, can you not be here for the whole day?” Soobin sheepishly asks, his eyes pleading.

“Why? Is everything ok?” Yeonjun responds, a little panicked and worried.

“Nothing, I just have a lot of things to do and I want to get it done quickly” Soobin replies, his voice going up a pitch.

“Oh. sure” Yeonjun answers back, getting slightly suspicious of Soobin.

The taller one gives a slight smile as he pushes his boyfriend out the door.

“I’ll text you when I’m done”

Yeonjun briefly nods as he walks away, trusting the younger or at least, for now. Despite being together for 2 years, Yeonjun still doesn’t quite trust Soobin but he decides to brush it off and go on with his schedule.

---------------------------------------------

(meanwhile)

“Soobin-hyung, are you ready? I’m so excited for you” Beomgyu exclaims, jumping around the apartment.

Soobin just gives a brief shrug, feeling his nervousness grow by the second. The older one paces around the room whilst fanning himself with his hand with the younger one tailing behind.

“Oh come on. You’ve been waiting for so long now. You even promised that if you both became stars, you’d still love him for the rest of your life” Beomgyu points out, finally sitting his hyperactive self on the floor, legs crossed.

The older one groans in annoyance, just feeling the butterflies in his stomach turn into angry swarms of bees. He drags his fingers on his face.

“Soobin, we’re all going to be there to surprise him and support you” Beomgyu reassures his elder.

“What happened to the honorifics?” Soobin asks, crossing his arms and glaring at the younger.

Beomgyu merely ignores the question and walks to the coffee table, before picking up his cup of water and dumping it onto Soobin’s head.

“YOU IDIOT HYUNG. WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT GOD DAMN HONORIFICS AT THIS TIME?!” Beomgyu exclaims as the elder shoots icy glares at the younger one.

The taller one just stands there, unable to comprehend what just happened. He blinks a few times to fully soak in what had just taken place.

“Say something” Beomgyu exclaims, snapping his fingers and waving his arms around to get Soobin’s attention.

“Oh right” Soobin replies, coming back to reality before he fully processes the fact that Beomgyu had thrown water on him. Much to the latter’s surprise, the elder doesn’t get angry at the fact that he is soaking wet, in fact, the corners of his mouth turn into a wide smile. The ones you would call ‘goofy’, but who was he to care about it? He is going to ask the love of his life to marry him and that is all he could care about.

“So, go. Change” Beomgyu says as he eyes the ring box. Soobin gives a subtle nod as he runs to his room and picks out a black suit and tie.

After a while of watching a few Youtube videos of ‘how to tie a tie’, the older finally managed to present himself neatly.

“So? How do I look?” Soobin grins as he walks back into the living room, picking up the ring box and opening it to check the ring hadn’t disappeared.

“You look smart, for once” Beomgyu teases as pats the older on the back, smiling.

The latter rolls his eyes before breaking out in a smile. “Thanks Gyu” Soobin then proceeds to take out his phone and text Yeonjun.

sb: hey hyung, can you meet me where we first met? I heard the ‘one dream’ comet is coming back

Yeonjun didn’t reply for a while but when he did, the response made Soobin gulp.

yj: Soobin-ah, what is going on? First, you asked me to leave for a while, now you want to meet up with me in the same place we first met, like when we once were strangers. You aren’t planning to break up with me?

“Oh fuck my life” Soobin grumbles as he reads Yeonjun’s message before Beomgyu runs over and tries to look at the text.

“What’s wrong?” Beomgyu asks, peeping over Soobin’s shoulder, or at least trying to.

The latter finally hands his phone to the younger one and once he finishes reading the past texts, Beomgyu audibly gasps. Just as Soobin is about to take his phone back from the younger’s grasp, he hears the doorbell ringing.

“I’ll get it” Soobin mutters as he walks to the front door, greeted by the sight of both Taehyun and Huening Kai standing there with bouquets of tulips and anemones.

(meanwhile)

As Beomgyu has Soobin’s phone in his possession since the older went to greet the guests, he quickly texts Yeonjun back, pretending to be Soobin.

sb: absolutely not. Why would I do that? You know I love you to infinity and beyond

Yeonjun replies almost immediately.

yj: you say that a lot. But how can I trust you? You’ve been acting all nervous and strange around me these past few weeks

sb: I promise you. It’s nothing bad. Just please meet me there

yj: fine, but if it turns out bad, I’m blocking you for eternity

“Yah. Choi Beomgyu, what are you doing with my phone?” came a voice as Beomgyu looks up and is met with the sight of Soobin looking down at him with a frown before the latter snatches his phone back.

“Saving your relationship” The younger one responds as he notices Taehyun and Huening Kai standing behind Soobin. “OH HIIIIII”

“Did you seriously invite them too?” Soobin asks, raising his brow. Beomgyu only replies with a sheepish grin. The former groans as he looks at the three younger ones. “Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(at the hillside)

As they arrive at the hillside, Taehyun and Huening Kai rush around, tossing flower petals everywhere. Beomgyu (as Beomgyu as can be) runs around like a maniac singing (actually just shouting) Nap of Star as the younger ones shoot him a glare for not participating in their tossing flower petals work. All whilst Soobin is taking deep breaths, in and out; letting all his nerves calm down. He is disturbed when all of a sudden, he feels something being thrown at him. He opens his

“Go. Hide” Beomgyu hisses at Taehyun and Huening Kai as he also runs to hide behind a bush with his phone out, ready to record his hyung’s special moment.

Soobin shakily walks over to the spot, ready to propose to Yeonjun. He practices his lines as he waits for the elder. Just as he is midway through the sentence, Yeonjun appears with a small smile on his face. The soft breeze blowing through his hair, the moonlight shining down on his face, once more, Soobin falls in love again.

Noticing the petals and romantic set up, Yeonjun’s brows furrow.

“What’s going on?” he questions as he walks over to Soobin, looking around in utter confusion.

The latter clears his throat before speaking.

“Yeonjun-hyung. From the moment I met you, I knew I’d be happy for the rest of my life. I fell for you, over and over again. It is truly my honour to be living in the same universe as you. I wish you knew how much I love you and how much I tell the stars about you. We’ve been through so much, especially both of us always catching colds because we star gaze so often. Ever since we met, I’ve always wanted to say this but I’ve been too caught up or too shy. And every time I see you, I blush so hard. But now’s the moment. Yeonjun-hyung, you’re so fucking pretty it hurts and even the stars couldn’t make up for your beauty. And I have one final thing left to ask” Soobin states before slowly getting down on one knee, watching Yeonjun’s expression turn from

“Choi Yeonjun, under all the shooting stars in the entire universe, will you marry me?”

But before Yeonjun can answer, a sudden whooshing sound interrupts them and the next second, Yeonjun can only hear loud ringing in his ears. He shuts his eyes and covers his ears, hating the uncomfortable feeling. But as he does so, he can hear the three younger ones shouting ‘SOOBIN-HYUNG’. Yeonjun quickly snaps back to reality and looks at the horrific sight infront of him, screaming loudly in the process.

His boyfriend/soon to be fiance is crushed under the massive comet. Blood pooled on the ground, and bits of flesh sprayed everywhere. It is sincerely a gruesome sight.

Unable to control his emotions, Yeonjun falls down to his knees, sobbing in pain, agony, sadness and utter disbelief. His heart beating rapidly as it compresses and decompresses.

“Yes, I’ll marry you” came his hoarse voice before his vision went black and all he could hear is ‘Choi Yeonjun, under all the shooting stars in the entire universe, will you marry me?’. Soon after, his mind goes blank as well, almost as if the world is caving in and everything comes to an unanticipated halt.

Bright fluorescent lights, loud beeping sounds, the weird scent of antiseptic, a little bitter wafting through the air and the weird feeling of uncertainty. Yeonjun’s eyes flutter open as he is greeted with the sight of plain white walls and machines everywhere.

“Yeonjun-hyung” a familiar voice cries out as he feels a sudden weight on top of him. Re-opening his eyes, he sees the 3 younger ones piled on him with wide smiles.

“You’re alive” Beomgyu exclaims, squeezing the elder as the latter winces slightly.

Despite being extremely tempted to reply sarcastically, Yeonjun holds back the urge to respond to Beomgyu’s comment and hugs him back. Slowly, Beomgyu, Taehyun & Huening Kai got off the elder and stood back.

Yeonjun looks around the room and notices someone missing. He raises a brow and jogs his memory before coming to the realization that Soobin is dead. The minute he thought of it, his expression went solemn and full of disappointment as he gazes down at his hands, finding a diamond ring on his ring finger. And it all floods back. From the suspicious kicking him out of the house, to the comet crushing his soon to be husband. He quickly averts his gaze back onto his friends who give a sympathetic look.
“Hyung, I’m sorry” Beomgyu mumbles, looking down at the ground & twiddling his fingers.

Yeonjun gave a soft hum of acknowledgement, “Not your fault”.

There is a long silence in the room. The sound of footsteps echoes through the hallways and the soft delicate sound of bird chirping fill the silence.
“Where is Soobin now?” Yeonjun asks, looking at the three.

The three of them look back and forth at each other, not really knowing what to respond with until Taehyun spoke up.

“He’s been buried already in Ansan-si. His family requested it” came the answer.

The eldest nods before looking away, seeming too tired and grief stricken to do anything.

“We’ll leave you alone. Call us if you need anything” Huening Kai says, heading to the door with the other two trailing behind.

As Yeonjun stands under the broad canvas of the night sky, entranced by the meteorite shower that paints streaks of light across the blackness, memories of him and his beloved Soobin flood back.
They'd spent countless evenings like this, enveloped in one other's warmth and gazing at the celestial beauty overhead.
His boyfriend's laughter rang through his heart, a bittersweet song of delight and desire.
They had both dreamed of traveling the universe, and their relationship was a constellation of shared aspirations and ambitions.
Though his partner was no longer physically there, his presence seemed woven into the fabric of the stars, forming an everlasting bond that transcended earthly boundaries.

Notes:

And that was them.

Apart but together,
The distance of light years.
The ever changing weather,
And the endless tears.
Brought together and pulled apart,
All by a shooting star that they keep at heart.

That was the end of their story.
Just two distant sparks wishing on a shooting star,
Hoping to meet each other again.
