Work Text:
“Hey!”
Nora waved her hand in the air. Beside her, 2 older teens around 17 stood by her.
Nora had a wide smile on her face, she was wearing a vampire costume.
As she walked up to me, the train of her black and red dress tripped one of her ‘bodyguards’.
He cursed under his breath before catching himself.
She ran to me, launching me a hug. “Don't worry, they won't be here for long.” she whispered to me, looking to her left where her brothers stood.
They gave me a death glare, then they proceeded to say something in mandarin.
I would REALLY hate to get on their bad side.
She pulled out of the hug to get a good look at my costume. Her face scrunched a bit before giggling.
“Joker?” she guessed.
“Yeah, it's a hand-me-down though.”
She tugged on my green blazer, it made a slight ripping sound.
“Yeah, I can tell.”
Nora is my best friend and she has been a fashion geek since I've known her, which is a decently long time.
I met her in kindergarten but never really “hung out” with her until the 4th grade.
It was also complete luck, I was paired with her and another kid on a field trip to universal.
We got lost from our chaperone and I remember her sobbing as I tried to comfort her.
Eventually we were found but it was embarrassing because by the time we were, everyone was on the bus waiting for us so they could go home.
We talked the whole ride back, that other guy looked annoyed.
Speaking of that other guy, I heard him call out.
“Davis! Nora!” he yelled.
Nora stopped inspecting my blazer to run up to him, throwing him into a hug as well.
“Finally! It took you forever.” she said with a groan.
“You guys are lucky I didn’t ditch.” he said as he gasped for air from Nora’s tight hug.
I walked up to him as Nora let go, he held his hand out. I grabbed it and squeezed it before patting him on the back.
“You should be faster.” I replied while letting go.
“You're not funny Davi.” he retorted.
That is my other best friend, Sean. He can sometimes be a major “a-hole” but ultimately, he's my best friend.
Along with Nora, I've known him since kindergarten.
Nora and Sean were always friends but when me and Nora got close, he despised me.
He wouldn't like to bully me but I could tell I wasn't wanted.
Eventually, he stopped holding a grudge and tried to get to actually know me. I definitely became one of his best friends, although he would never admit it. At the end of 8th grade, we all became a trio and no hard feelings were left.
“Seriously?” Nora said, “Your ghostface?”
“What? Do people not like Scream anymore?”
We all paused, “It's not that we don't, it's just–” I exhaled. “It's overrated.”
“Oh whatever. You're literally a joker.”
I rolled my eyes as he grinned, Nora standing between us.
“Come on! Don't start this. We need to start trick or treating already.”
She slipped between us and interlocked our arms.
“Bye James! Bye Hero!” she said without looking. Immediately after, she took off running.
We ran up to the start of the first neighborhood, I would never admit it but halloween is super scary to me, even now.
I went to a haunted house with my older sisters when I was like 10, I wet myself and one of the actors slipped on it. I had to wear a jacket around my costume until we got home. By far one of the most humiliating incidents of my life. I never went to a haunted house again.
“Okay guys.” she started. “This is probably the last Halloween of trick or treating. We need to make it the best.”
“Why is it our last again?” Sean asked.
“We are all 15,” I mentioned, “We are getting old.”
The thought of halloween ending kinda made me upset believe it or not.
“We need to make this the best night ever.” Nora yelled.
People walked past us and looked at Nora, grabbing their younger kids to stay near them. Like we were a threat, if anything, Nora is probably the only one.
Sean sighed and checked his wrist watch. I looked too, I didn't even see the time from how distracted I was. His watch was pure gold and it had swirls and alot more designs.
Sometimes I forget he's kinda rich.
“6:43” Sean said.
“Huh?”
“It’s 6:43”
Nora cracked her knuckles, “Alright! We have until 9:30, that’s when my brothers are getting us.”
“We better get started then, huh?” I said.
She nodded and she ran off to the first house, me and Sean following closely behind.
She left us in the dust, she did cross country so I assumed she would be fast but not like that.
Me and Sean started to walk as she kept running.
“I know you don't really like halloween.” He suddenly said,
“Hm? I do like it, what do you mean–”
“Just make it good for her okay? She’s super set on this.”
I sighed, “Yeah, I will.”
“Good.” he said before punching me in my arm. “Let's catch up.”
We both started to run again, maybe this would be a good halloween.
