The Prince of the Clipboard

Summary:

When disaster strikes their babysitter, Liam (6) and Andrea (4) know exactly what to do.

Work Text:

Jack’s voice on the klaxon directing them to Maya’s house was decidedly NOT on the bingo card for this year, but – and Maya had pinched herself twice – it was happening.

Maya was torn between wanting to call Carina to immediately let her know, and wanting to figure things out first. She decided to wait just because it was such a short ride in the engine. This was the first time trying a baby-sitter instead of Liam and Andrea being taken to the hospital’s daycare and, probably, the last.

“Bishop, when we get there, get to the kids. We’ll deal with the scene.” Captain Herrera didn’t even bother trying to call Bishop to her senses. Andy knew better than that. At this moment, Maya was a mom and she could never try to argue that.

“Understood. Thanks Andy.” Maya was out of the engine the moment they parked. She had unbuckled a second before they’d even parked.

All Jack had been able to tell them was that it was an unresponsive adult at the scene. The call had come from a child. Maya’s heart had skipped several beats at that news.

Maya ran faster than her Olympic track record to get to her children. “Liam! Andrea! Where are you?” She yelled.

Not even Diane Lewis could have prepared Maya for the scene she laid her eyes on.

Newly six, Liam was perched over an unconscious teenager, clipboard in his hands. Maya struggled to remember the baby-sitter’s name. Andrea, four, was likely just playing with the tools that had been clumsily dragged out from Carina’s “doctor mamma” box.

“Mommy!” Liam and Andrea said in the same breath. Liam looked down at his clipboard. “The clock was on these two numbers when Sarah fell. I know we aren’t supposed to take her phone, but I had to get help so I grabbed it from her pocket.” Liam showed Maya his clipboard, a crude drawing of a clock on his papers in blue crayon.

“Come on, buddies. Get out of the way so the team can work. Let’s go to your room, Andrea.” Maya suggested breathlessly, taking no small amount of pride in the way Liam’s chest puffed out. “You did so good.” Maya whispered, picking Liam up in one arm and Andrea in the other. “Mamma is going to be so proud of you! I am so proud of you.” Maya meant every word. “You did everything just right.”
