A small trip

Summary:

Rein and Ryuji take a little walk.

Work Text:

Rein was walking to the convenience store, needing a snack break from all the work she’d been doing. Ryuji had decided to tag along with her, as backup.

Idly thinking, she figured that it was likely safe enough just by herself. Although they were still in the middle of establishing their grip on Shibuya, and prohibiting anyone from playing Darwin’s Game, most players could see how powerful the Sunset Ravens are. Messing with anyone in her clan would just be asking for slaughter in return.

“I hope they’re not out of milk this time,” Ryuji muttered, “Especially with Sui and Sota always trying to freeze it.”

Rein chuckled, “They were just trying to make ice cream for everyone.”

“Yeah, well making four icy bricks isn’t exactly appetizing,” Ryuji replied.

Rein chuckled again. Having some company was nice, at least.

They walked a couple steps more, when they suddenly heard someone whimpering behind them. Warily, Rein turned around... and found a kid aiming a water gun at them.

“S-surrender! Or I’ll m-mess you up!”, the kid shouted.

Curious of how evidently nervous they were, Ryuji asked, “Are you a DGame player?”

“U-uh, you mean Darwin’s Game? Y-yeah, I’m trying to defeat you!”

Rein wondered if this kid actually knew how that worked. Though, they could be trying to get their guard down by acting dumb. Glancing to Ryuji, she uttered, “Careful, we don’t know what their sigil is.”

The kid got confused, “Sigil? W-what’s that?!”

Calmly, Ryuji said to them, “You don’t know what a sigil is?”

“Er, n-no...”

Ryuji whispered over to Rein, “They’re telling the truth.”

Seeing what they were dealing with here, Rein walked up to the kid and slapped the water gun out of their hand.

“Ah! P-please...”, cried out the kid.

“Want a snack?”, Rein asked.

“W-what?!”

“We’re going to the convenience store down the street. You can join us if you’d like.”

“U-um, okay...”

Satisfied, Rein and Ryuji continued their walk to the store, now with the kid following them. After getting their snacks, along with a milk carton, they had a chat with the kid to gather what was going on with them.

“D-Darwin’s Game is about k-killing people?!”

Evidently the kid had no idea what they’d gotten into.

“That’s so scary! What am I going to do...”, the kid continued.

Rein spoke, “Hey, don’t worry. You’re actually safer than you think.”

“H-how so?”

Ryuji replied, “Because our clan, the Sunset Ravens, is stopping anyone from playing DGame in Shibuya. So as long as you stay in Shibuya, you’ll be safe.”

“Really! Oh, that’s a relief!”, the kid sighed.

Thinking it over, Rein guessed that they were probably a middle schooler, judging by their looks and rather... immature behaviour. She briefly recalled her own life before getting thrown into the game, but refocused on the matter at hand.

“Just in case, let’s share our contacts. That way, you can call for our help if any players try engaging you,” Rein said to them.

“Oh wow, thank you...”

“You’re welcome. We need to keep track of anyone that tries anything anyway.”

With all said and done, they went their separate ways. Looking over, Rein could see that the kid looked a lot less nervous than before.

“Think they’ll be okay?”, Ryuji commented to Rein.

“Should have good chances. Battles have already dropped a lot here, won’t be too long for us to get the leftovers,” Rein responded.

It’s nice to have a bit of hope for once, she thought. Maybe, just maybe, the Sunset Ravens actually will end Darwin’s Game. No matter how long it takes.
