Work Text:
Doyoung is barely able to open his eyes at the sound of his alarm. He groans, burying his face into the pillow and his hand flopping around as he blindly reaches for the device that’s inconveniently settled at the far back of the bedside table. With some struggle he’s able to turn off the alarm. He lets out a huff of air, brain still muddled with sleep and exhaustion. The regret of partying during a sunday night finally dawning on him. But it’d been Johnny’s birthday and he knows he wouldn’t have been able to say no. He’s got no one to blame but himself though for drinking a little too much than he had intended.
“God why the fuck do you have an alarm so early in the morning.”
Doyoung visibly startles at the unfamiliar voice. He whips his head to look to his left only to see a guy covered by his mess of sheets, face buried deep beneath the blanket. He almost completely forgets about the pretty guy he’d taken to his bed last night, both of them horny and drunk out of their mind to even care to know what each other’s name is.
“It’s monday. I’ve got classes.” Doyoung mutters, voice scratchy from unuse. He clears his throat which does nothing. He needs water. Doyoung sits up and swings his legs off the side of his mattress. He squints his eyes, trying to clear his vision that’s still blurry with sleep.
“Just skip it and come back to bed,” The guy tries to persuade him, “Last night was fun.” He continues with an obvious lilt in his voice, one that’s meant to entice Doyoung but it barely works. Doyoung can’t even remember much of last night. He only breathes out a laugh as a response.
“Listen, as much as I’d love to. I’m gonna have to get going. You can stay for a bit.” Doyoung offers albeit kindly, “Although…my roommate isn’t that great with strangers and might freak out on you. Sorry.” Doyoung says sheepishly, feigning regret. It’s the same one he uses every time he has someone over, not really looking forward to those morning after conversations with the people he sleeps with.
Doyoung only gets a groan of acknowledgement from the guy and he takes that as his cue to leave. He picks up a fresh set of clothes from his drawers, digging deep into the mess of clothes that’s all bundled in heaps. He inwardly groans as he drags himself to the bathroom, already feeling the thrum of the impending hangover headache.
-
Doyoung slumps into his chair, already feeling his eyelids droop. He effectively tunes out the professor’s morning announcements and reminders. He’d taken an ibuprofen after a quick breakfast this morning and while that certainly helped with the headache, he still feels groggy and sleepy.
He sighs, looking at the door every few seconds. It's already seven minutes past nine, and he still isn't here which is concerning.
He, being Kim Jungwoo — the shy, impressively smart, tall, brown-haired boy with round, soft eyes and an impossibly pretty face with a nose that slopes down perfectly into a cute button tip and lips that are ample and pink — who also happens to be the person who Doyoung has a not so little crush on.
His friends had mocked him relentlessly about it. They’re a witness to his countless one night stands, flings, and the like…but this one is different somehow, more innocent in a way and completely out of Doyoung’s character. But Doyoung had also explained countless times that he had no plan whatsoever, no ulterior motive, just…quiet admiration from afar.
While Doyoung is a bit picky, Kim Jungwoo is a case wherein he’s infuriatingly easy to like.
Doyoung groans inwardly, head dropping onto his table with a little thump. While he’s infamous for usually skipping morning lectures, oddly enough, algebra is one of the subjects he actually attends to which his friends had found ironic, himself included. Kim Doyoung, notorious for skipping classes attending a 9AM math lecture? Now that’s something you don’t see every day.
But it isn’t that he came here because he likes the subject though, that’s bullshit. Only reason he actually drags his ass to attend this lecture is to see that cute freshman. Call him weird or anything, it isn’t like he’s doing anything outright creepy to the guy — heck he hasn’t even spoken to him once. And he’s honestly okay with that, not really having any desire of talking up a conversation with the boy, no, he’d rather have the soil beneath him swallow him up before that happens.
See, Doyoung doesn’t have the best reputation in campus; he’s a fuck boy to put it simply, drives a motorcycle, wears black from head to toe, loves to sleep around, known to party hard and generally not the type to settle down or pursue anything serious or long term; painfully cliche but that’s him. He’s content in where he is right now, just silently and distantly admiring Kim Jungwoo who probably doesn’t know of his existence. He would probably send the poor guy running for the hills once he finds out the shit Doyoung’s been into. So Doyoung doesn’t at all try and he’d like for it to remain that way until the end of the semester where they probably won’t even cross paths again since Doyoung’s already on his second year of music composition while the freshman is under the engineering department as far as he knows.
Still, Doyoung finds himself drawn to class day after day, taking his usual spot a few rows back where he can still see Jungwoo without being too obvious and conveniently where their professor never really paid attention to.
Doyoung sighs, craning his head to look at the window beside him. His distant thoughts are interrupted once the door slams open, making it hit a wall which surprises everyone in class.
“Good morning Park Seonsaengnim, I’m sorry I’m late.” Kim Jungwoo says breathlessly, arm still holding out the door wide open, soft hair tousled in every direction possible, and a tinge of pink painting his cheeks.
Doyoung unconsciously perks up in his seat. He’s fucking adorable. He always is but today he’s even more so and it’s annoying — Doyoung thinks to himself, unable to suppress a timid quirk of his lips.
“Ah, Mr. Kim! I suppose your perfect attendance and remarkable scores can compensate for your tardiness today; Just make sure this doesn’t happen again. Take a seat please.” Miss Park chirps with a clap of her hands. And if Jungwoo was flustered earlier, right now he’s blushing an even brighter red, shoulders hunched upwards as he sheepishly makes his way to his usual seat at the first row of the class, trying to settle down quietly without drawing too much attention. It’s a futile effort though, at least that’s what it looks like in Doyoung’s eyes.
Doyoung chuckles under his breath, eyeing the boy in interest. He watches as Jungwoo settles into his seat, attempting to be as discreet as he can while putting his things down. He swiftly pulls out a notebook along with his pen, from this side, Doyoung can still see the remnants of his blush on his cheeks and the way he immediately goes into focus into whatever their professor was saying. Doyoung can only stare.
Doyoung is resting his head on his arms that are folded over his desk, the drowsiness becoming harder to fight off with each passing second, especially after the two hour long lecture.
“Mr. Kim,” Miss Park says, voice closer and louder. Doyoung slowly lifts his head to see the professor in front of him with a stack of paper cradled in her arm with her other arm reaching toward him, a paper in hand.
Doyoung grunts in acknowledgement, accepting the paper in disinterest and barely even stifling a yawn.
“This is the third time you failed our quizzes, Mr. Kim. We’ll see if we can do something about it, alright?” Without missing a beat, Miss Park reprimands him as gently as she can and Doyoung is honestly grateful for it, he doesn’t think he can handle an earful from a professor this early in the morning.
Doyoung’s jaw ticks, sighing, “Yeah, sure. Thanks, seonsaengnim.” He mumbles, tucking the paper beneath his arms and resuming his light nap once Miss Park turns her back to him.
-
“...Kim Doyoung and Kim Jungwoo.” Now that actually grabs Doyoung’s attention.
Somewhere along the way of being lost in his own thoughts Doyoung barely pays attention towards the end of what Miss Park was talking about. In line with the upcoming exams, Miss Park had the glorious idea of partnering up the students who aren’t doing too well in her class, with those who have exceptional grades in her subject for an activity that also serves as some kind of practice or something. While the chances of him getting partnered up with Jungwoo aren’t zero, Doyoung didn’t really pay it any mind, not when there’s actually a lot of students enrolled under Miss Park’s care, a lot of them having a similar case with Doyoung, which is having to retake the subject.
Miss Park had only announced three partners for the activity when Doyoung heard his name along with Jungwoo’s.
His eyes briefly look at Miss Park before immediately looking to see Jungwoo’s reaction only to see him already staring at him with unsuspecting eyes. Doyoung swallows, unable to look away. Apparently, Kim Jungwoo actually knows who he is. If the curious eyes are anything to go by. Doyoung doesn’t know if he should be happy though.
“Doyoung Sunbaenim.”
What the actual fuck.
A familiar, soft honeyed voice calls out to him and Doyoung almost breaks his neck as he turns to where the sound is coming from.
Doyoung's mouth opens and closes like a fish out of water, struggling to find his voice as his mind races. He had anticipated a lot of things happening today, but this wasn’t one of them. Although he and Kim Jungwoo were assigned as partners, their activity wasn't due for another two weeks. Besides, the professor had said they'd email the details. So, Doyoung couldn't quite comprehend why the fuck Kim Jungwoo was talking to him right now.
“Hi, Jungwoo.” Doyoung says breathlessly as he looks up at the boy who’s standing beside his desk. He can’t help but notice the way Jungwoo fiddles with the hem of his pullover, eyes darting from Doyoung to somewhere else and back to him again seemingly unable to hold eye contact. His eyes are wide and his body language almost mousy. And Doyoung wants to burst right then and there.
Doyoung stands up, swiftly hooking his backpack over his shoulder so he’s face to face with the freshman with his head tilting upwards just a tad bit since Jungwoo is tall. He almost stumbles with the proximity. This is by far the closest they’ve been, not to mention their first actual conversation. Doyoung stifles a pant of air, nervous energy thrumming greatly beneath his skin as he wipes his sweaty palms over the rough fabric of his jeans. While he’s usually well with strangers and people in general, Jungwoo doesn’t really fall into any of those categories — for him at least.
“I was just wondering when you’re free? For the activity?”
“Oh, we’re starting on the activity this early?” Asks hurriedly, caught off guard and not even thinking twice before opening his mouth. Jesus christ how will he survive?
Jungwoo’s eyes widens and Doyoung wants to slam his face on the wall right then and there, “If you’re busy that’s totally fine of course. But we won’t get into the activity right away of course, just the introductions Miss Park asked us, y’know like the tutoring and stuff.” Jungwoo rambles and Doyoung isn’t quite sure if he got everything he said when he’s too busy looking at his face.
“Tutoring?” Doyoung can’t help but ask. God he never felt so dumb.
Jungwoo flushes at that, eyes still wide, “Yeah, Miss Park’s words not mine,” he trails off with a laugh, hand coming up to scratch at his nape.
Doyoung doesn’t answer, still not entirely getting it.
Jungwoo tilts his head a bit, “She asked us to give our partners a bit of tutoring before the actual activity…?”
Oh. Oh.
Doyoung is not ready for this and he isn’t sure when he will be ready for this.
“I don’t have classes on wednesdays. What about you?” Doyoung shrugs nonchalantly as if he isn’t experiencing an inner turmoil.
“I don’t have classes until the afternoon, is it okay if we meet in the morning?” Jungwoo asks shyly and Doyoung has to stop himself from nodding vigorously.
“Cool,” he comes up lamely, “That works for me.”
“Great! Then…is it alright if I get your number then?” Jungwoo asks, almost unsure while whipping out his phone and timidly reaches it out for Doyoung to take.
“What?” Doyoung deadpans.
“Um, your number…Sunbaenim? So I can contact you?” Jungwoo explains with a cute furrow of his eyebrows and a tilt of his head. Christ can this guy get even more adorable?
“Oh, yeah shit. Of course,” Doyoung says, fumbling with his words. And Jungwoo giggles. He fucking giggles. Doyoung momentarily stops, unable to help himself from looking at the younger who seems to be fighting off a wide smile, the front row of his teeth peeking between his plush lips one akin to a bunny. Doyoung feels his cheeks warm.
Thankfully, he snaps out of it before further making a fool out of himself and returns Jungwoo’s phone.
“Thank you, Doyoung-sunbaenim,” Jungwoo bows, “See you on wednesday!” he exclaims before turning to exit the room leaving Doyoung dumbfounded and hopelessly in love.
He’s fucking doomed.
-
“Are you kidding me? With the Kim Jungwoo? seriously?” Johnny nudges him playfully and Doyoung just grunts.
“Fuck off, hyung.” But the way he looked when he met them during his break, they knew something was up. He tried to blame it on alcohol, but they called him out immediately. So, Doyoung had no choice but to tell them the truth. They would have wrestled it out of him anyway.
“Are you sure this isn’t one of your plans or something? What happened to staying out of his radar, dude?”
“You think I wanted this to happen?” Doyoung scoffs and Taeyong rolls his eyes as he lays his head on top of Johnny’s shoulder, looking at the younger in disinterest.
“With the way you always seem to wax poet about the guy? You aren’t fooling anyone, Doyoung.”
“Fuck, hyung.” He finally says, exasperatedly. It’s no use having to hide his internal turmoil. “I already made a fool out of myself and we barely talked for five fucking minutes. Christ. What more during a whole goddamn studying session with him for a couple of days?”
“God, I can’t believe I’d live to see the day Doyoung being such a fucking loser for a guy.” Johnny laughs.
“Oh please, like we don’t already hear him going on about Jungwoo this Jungwoo that every single day.” Taeyong retorts in a mocking tone. “And babe, you keep forgetting that this isn’t just some guy.” He chastises with a roll of his eyes.
“You fuckers are insufferable.”
“What exactly happened anyway?” Taeyong asks, raising an eyebrow. “I mean, did he say something, or what?”
“Nah I just kept talking nonsense god I must’ve looked so stupid in front of him.” Doyoung groans once more, voice muffled with the way he covers his face with his hands.
“Shit, man. And here I thought you knew how to make an impression? What happened to being fucking cool and collected?” Johnny snickers.
“Yeah, well, I was neither cool nor collected,” Doyoung mutters. “He was nice enough to not say anything about it, though. Explained to me what we had to do and all that shit. But still, I looked like an idiot.”
“You’re overthinking it,” Taeyong says, patting Doyoung on the back. “Jungwoo probably didn’t think it was a big deal.”
“Well that’s a way of putting it,” Doyoung sighs, shoulder slumping, “He even asked for my number in the end.” He grins just at the thought.
“He fucking what?” Both Johnny and Taeyong looks at him incredulously.
“It’s not what it sounds like by the way. It’s for our fucking project.” and the couple only laughs at him and his misery.
-
The day approached him slower than he wanted. While completely anxious about their whole meeting, he can’t help the excitement of seeing the freshman again.
But once Wednesday came, Doyoung was considerably tired the morning of their meet. He barely slept last night, tossing and turning in his bed like a goddamn teenager about to go on a fucking date with his crush.
With still quite a lot of time to kill, Doyoung decided to go earlier than what they had agreed on.
He promptly parks his motorcycle near the entrance of the cafe. The rubble beneath his heavy boots crunch as he gets off. Removing his helmet, Doyoung cranes his neck from left to right making a satisfying crack, ruffles his hair a bit from being confined within his helmet.
“Sunbaenim?” Doyoung startles at the now very familiar voice that kept running through his head the past day since they spoke to each other.
“Fuck, Jungwoo. You scared the shit out of me. What are you doing here already?” Doyoung finally turns to look at the other and the freshman just makes his poor heart beat erratically way more than usual. The younger looks exceptionally pretty today; he’s wearing a striped blue cardigan over a white shirt, the tousle of his brown, soft hair gently being blown by the breeze. Doyoung can’t help but still for a moment as he admires him quite shamelessly.
Jungwoo’s laugh breaks him out of his thoughts, “I usually grab breakfast here whenever I don’t have anything at home.” He shrugs, a pretty smile painting over his face. “What about you? Wasn’t expecting to see you here so early yourself.” he giggles, the corners of his eyes crinkling a bit as he does.
Doyoung thinks back and realizes he can’t just fucking lay it out for Jungwoo that he came early to kill time and because he was both nervous and excited of seeing him again. “I uh…same as you, actually,” Doyoung laughs rather awkwardly, “Wanted to check out the place too since it’s my first time here. I haven’t gotten breakfast myself.” He tries. It technically isn’t a lie, but it wasn’t the whole truth either.
Jungwoo visibly perks up at that, pleased, “Well, that’s great then. We can have breakfast together.”
And Doyoung melts.
He just hopes he doesn’t fuck this up or at least make a bigger fool of himself.
-
Update: Doyoung is in fact a mess.
Quite literally.
At first, everything has been going well which is surprising. They’ve ordered breakfast and found a nice place at the back of the cafe just so it won’t be too noisy once they actually start studying. Thankfully, there aren’t a lot of people yet which is understandable since it is still pretty damn early. Most of the customers going for take out, mostly office workers and the like. Although, Doyoung is pretty sure it won't be long until the shop fills up with students.
While waiting for their orders, both of them made small talk with Doyoung stumbling over his words perhaps a handful of times here and there but jesus, Jungwoo has been too much of an absolute sweetheart to even comment on it or even seem bothered in the slightest by Doyoung’s jitteriness. And the elder only continues to fall even deeper the longer they talk.
Turns out Jungwoo’s even more charming than Doyoung had imagined with his focus intent on the younger, heart still beating a little bit faster than normal. Eventually, conversation ran smoothly between the two of them, dappled in with Doyoung’s occasional awkward stumbles.
As they talked, Doyoung was able to learn about Jungwoo’s love for puppies and that he tries to go to the local animal shelter every once in a while since the place he’s living at the moment doesn’t allow any pets, and Doyoung almost coos and excuse me but Kim Doyoung never fucking coos…unless it’s something incredibly inclined towards such cuteness in other words — Kim Jungwoo who falls rather perfectly under the category easily.
Perhaps it’s the way his eyes lit up or the way his fluff of hair moves gently with his movements the moment he talks excitedly about this certain dog or two he admitted having a little favoritism towards — a golden retriever named Biscuit and a sapsali senior dog named Bear. Doyoung just nodded and hummed, an amused grin painted on his face (he’s struggling to tamp down the widest smile he can muster not wanting to seem weird) while Jungwoo talked his heart out. He gets lost in the animated way Jungwoo spoke, each word and facial expression tugging him deeper into his damned infatuation.
While Doyoung was about to tell a story of their pet dog back at home, they both heard their order number being called by the barista. And as Jungwoo was about to stand up, Doyoung was much faster.
“Don’t worry, I got this one.” Doyoung offered and although hesitant in sitting back down, Jungwoo decided to not argue. He nodded and flashed Doyoung a shy, timid smile as a thank you in which Doyoung returned with a grin.
He excused himself as he stood up letting out a breath once he did. While his heart had calmed down for the most part, he was still unusually nervous. The usually so confident and self-assured Doyoung around most people, is merely a trembling leaf when it comes to Jungwoo.
As Doyoung reached out for their tray of breakfast, he couldn’t help but steal a glance at the back of the cafe where Jungwoo was seated. He was scrolling through his phone, a barely there yet noticeable grin tugging at his lips which Doyoung unconsciously mirrored.
Doyoung gave the barista a curt thank you and then a bow. Once he turned around though, what he definitely wasn’t expecting was a cold liquid splashed all over his shirt, soaking him instantly. The tray of food wobbled in his grip but he’s thankful it remained untouched. Himself though…not so much.
“Fucking watch where you’re going,” Doyoung snaps at the guy who accidentally spilled his iced coffee at him. The student looks both guilty and intimidated and mutters strings of apologies but Doyoung isn’t having any of it. Annoyed and in disbelief that this just had to happen to him today of all days.
“This is great,” he mutters sarcastically as he looks down at his shirt. He’s lucky he usually wears black shirts, the stain barely noticeable but the coldness is irritating and it doesn’t help that he gradually begins to feel sticky beneath the soaked cloth. “Just fucking perfect.” Doyoung glares at the guy who’s bowing at him in apology.
Jungwoo who unsurprisingly witnessed everything much to Doyoung’s embarrassment is suddenly by his side, taking the tray from him and setting it down carefully onto one of the empty tables.
Doyoung is still quite livid when Jungwoo, who’s taller than him, stands in front of him, blocking his sight of the guy, “Sunbaenim, hey, it’s okay.” Jungwoo says so softly and immediately Doyoung diverts his attention to him who’s so close to his face that he thinks he forgets to breathe for a moment.
He has his jaw clenched, a furious blush on his cheeks out of embarrassment, “That kid should’ve been more fucking careful,” he breathes out, eyes trying to search past Jungwoo.
“Doyoung hyung, it was an accident. Let’s just go and get you cleaned up.” Jungwoo says, voice a little louder now but still feathery soft, the concern is enough to make Doyoung’s anger falter. And wait did he just call him hyung?
-
Aside from the obvious disaster, everything else surprisingly went well. While Doyoung had been buzzing in embarrassment and frustration — here he was was trying to not make a fool out of himself in front of Jungwoo but it seems like fate had other plans and wanted to play with him a bit — Jungwoo was soothing, and even helped Doyoung clean up the best as he can with tissues and even some wipes he had in his bag. The man is literally heaven-sent, Doyoung concludes after a while.
Time seemed to be going a lot faster than Doyoung had wanted though. Their little studying session was short-lived despite Doyoung not being too fond of the subject. But when you have Jungwoo teaching you? Suddenly everything is much clearer to him.
“I’m still not sure how you’ve been getting shitty scores, Doyoung hyung. You catch on quick.” Jungwoo teases him as he shuts his notebook and tucking it into his bag.
Doyoung grins at him, “Flattery won’t work, Jungwoo-ya. And how the hell do you even do it? Miss Park is like a fucking robot once she starts teaching. It’s a snoozefest, perfect for naps.”
“It isn’t if you actually like the subject.” Jungwoo pouts, and Doyoung thinks his heart skips a beat at the sight. With the amount of times the boy had him struggling to keep his feelings at bay, he isn’t even sure why he’s still alive and breathing at this point.
They both stand up and start making their way out of the cafe, Doyoung’s bag slung over his shoulder and helmet in his other hand.
“Exactly my point.” Doyoung shrugs.
Jungwoo rolls his eyes playfully, “But seriously, you did great today, Sunbaenim.” Jungwoo bows once they reach outside in front of Doyoung’s motorcycle.
“What? Were you expecting I’d do bad? I’m kind of hurt, Jungwoo-ya. And stop with the honorifics already.” Doyoung tries to act cool and he’s actually proud of himself for not stuttering anymore.
Jungwoo’s eyes widen comically, “I—Hyung, that isn’t what I meant. It’s just that you seriously-”
Doyoung’s eyes sparkle, devastatingly endeared with the freshman stumbling over his words, “I’m kidding, Jungwoo. Stop worrying your pretty little head.” he clicks his tongue, surprised how he’s able to casually talk to Jungwoo right now.
“Oh…uh, of course,” Jungwoo laughs, “So, I’ll see you around, Hyung? I still have classes so…”
“Do you have a ride?”
“Oh no, I usually take the bus everywhere. ” He giggles and Doyoung once again wants to fucking melt right then and there.
“Well, you won’t have to today. I can give you a ride if you want?” Doyoung tries to sound casual but inside he’s freaking out so bad.
“Oh no it’s okay, Hyung. You don't have to go out of your way for me. The bus ride takes only a few minutes too.” Jungwoo shakes his head.
“Jungwoo, it’s fine. My place is the same way so it’s not a big deal I promise,” Lies it is in fact a big fucking deal. Kim Jungwoo on his fucking motorcycle? That’s practically begging him to just wither away.
Jungwoo is quiet for a few seconds, obviously contemplating. “But you don’t have to if you don’t want to of course,” Doyoung quickly adds, “I’m just giving you an…option or something.” He explains dumbly.
“Alright.”
What?
“Um, I’ll go with you, Hyung.” Jungwoo says, looking at Doyoung expectantly. Christ, he’s so out of it that he doesn’t even realize he’s saying his thoughts out loud.
“Oh fuck yeah, sure, of course. Here,” He rambles, hand fumbling with his helmet. He’s quite positive there’s a tinge of pink on his cheeks at the moment.
Jungwoo hesitantly takes the helmet, “What about you?” he asks, gesturing towards the helmet.
Doyoung waves him off, “I’m fine. It’s more important that you wear it, Jungwoo-ya.”
“Thank you, Hyung.” Jungwoo mutters softly and Doyoung simply smiles at him.
Jungwoo climbs on once Doyoung’s got his motorcycle going.
“You ready, Jungwoo.”
“Yes.”
“Hold on tight, alright?” At that, Jungwoo circles his arms around Doyoung’s torso which is thankfully covered by his leather jacket. Doyoung fucking prays that Jungwoo does not feel the way his heart is beating erratically at the moment.
“You don’t have to tell me twice, Hyung.” Jungwoo says confidently. Doyoung blushes, heart rate spiking wildly with the way Jungwoo’s plastered against his back, body heat encasing his own comfortably and he almost wishes that the drive to the University is long but alas, it was only a few minutes away at best.
He revels in the feeling of Jungwoo back hugging him. Their eyes meet briefly at the mirror the first time, both of them looking away at the same time making them flustered. For the second time though, during a red light, Jungwoo holds his gaze, eyes turning into crescents and Doyoung sucks in a breath, unable to hide the smile stretching his lips and the crows feet at the corner of his eyes. Once the light turned green, he feels Jungwoo shift closer towards him, arms pulled around him tighter, and his chin resting on top of Doyoung’s shoulder.
In that moment, Doyoung figures maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to let Jungwoo know how he feels.
