Chapter 1: Things Come Crashing Down

Chapter Text

Hinata was still trying to process the devastating loss to Aoba Johsai when he went home. He gave his all, but it wasn't enough. He wasn’t enough.

His mom was sitting on the couch with her head in her hands. Did she already know? Was she already disappointed in him?

“Shouyou, we need to talk.” Well that's never good. The last time his mother had said that, had been when he failed math.

“What is it, are you okay?” Hinata asked his mother.

His mother sighed. “This is going to be a lot. You may as well sit down.”

Hinata took a seat on the worn couch.

“Mom, you’re kinda freaking me out.”

She started crying. “Sho……..it's about your father.”

“Huh??!! But we don’t talk about him.”

Hinata’s mom looked at him with so much sorrow.

“I know that but unfortunately we need to. He’s getting remarried.”

“...He’s alive?” Shouyou was always told that his dad died on a work trip to America.

His mother looked at him with regret. “Well, he’s not and he has been sending monthly payments for you and Natsu. I haven’t let him see you, but he said unless you go he’s going to cut the payments.”

Hinata was not known for having thoughts. He had friends that were thoughtful people but him? Head empty. Somehow he suddenly has so many thoughts. Where was his dad? How long was the wedding? He had school and volleyball practice. He couldn’t go. The team had to improve for nationals.

“Now, I know that this is difficult and last minute, but you’re going to California for the wedding and a few months after. You’ll be attending school there and getting to know your father. He knows that you love volleyball and enrolled you in a volleyball thing. You’ll be coming back at the beginning of october. Unless you like it better, in which case we can work things out.”

His mom was weeping, but Hinata? Hinata was furious.

“No! No! No! GWAH! I won’t go mom! MY TEAM NEEDS ME.”

His mom waved a hand in dismissal. “They can handle things without you for a few months and you can play with them when you get back.”

His life was ending.

Hinata ran to his room. He started sobbing and dialed Kageyama. Kageyama always knew what to do. He could fix this. He always fixed it.

Kageyama picked up on the second ring. “WHAT NOW DUMBA- … Are you crying?”

On the other end Hinata made a broken noise in response.

“Hey, Today was rough and I cried when we lost too, but it's okay dumbass we’ll get them next time.”

Hinata shakily gets out, “No, I’m leaving Kageyama. I won’t have a next time for a while.”

Hinata can almost picture the look of rage on his face, “You idiot. You’re really gonna run away. What are you gonna quit? After eve-”

“NO! I mean I’m leaving for a-a-america.”

Silence.

“What do you mean america?”

Kageyama sounds so broken.

“...I’ll be back in october. It’s a family thing. I-I-I Just found out.”

Silence.

“Kageyama, Will we be okay?”

“...You’re coming back so it's fine. The team will be okay till you get back idiot. Just, will you be okay?”

“I don’t know.”

Hinata boarded the plane the next day.

No one wished him a safe flight. Maybe that's why the plane crashed.

The plane was going down just off the coast of california. Hinata could barely think over the sound of screams. The air bags had dropped from the ceiling and the emergency lights were flashing. The woman next to him was grabbing his arm for dear life, sobbing into him. The flight attendant was trying to reassure them everything would be okay, while her voice wobbled.

Hinata's head bounced off the window harshly making his eyes heavy. It was almost a blessing that he went unconscious.

Shouyou woke up to a harsh light blinding his eyes. Everything hurts. Asas São Paulo had some harsh practices lately, but he never woke up with headaches like this.

He had been practicing hard lately though. Maybe he should talk to the athletic coach for his team or run this by Iwa. Maybe he had a concussion from taking a spike to the head. He didn't remember it, but that happens right?

He felt a pinch in his arm. “Hey! What was that for?”

Shouyou rubbed his arm.

The doctor stared at him. “I’m sorry, what was that?” The doctor asked in english. Clearly the doctor didn’t speak portuguese, weird, but maybe the doctor was international. His English was okay, thankfully.

“Sorry, the pinch startled me. I apologize.” Hinata said while trying to sit up. He felt an extreme case of dizziness. Okay maybe not try to sit up.

“Please remain laying down. We have contacted your father and he should be here soon. Do you remember what happened?” The doctor asked.

Shouyou sighed. “I was having practice and then I wasn’t?”

“No, you had just been in an accident.” The doctor looked remorseful. Oh god.

“Can I still play volleyball?!” Shouyou asked in a panic. The beeping machine picked up the pace.

The doctor gave a small smile. “Yes, medically you are fine, but you’ve been unconscious for longer than expected. It’s been about two days. If you wouldn’t mind answering my questions?” Thank god he was fine.

Hinata nods.

“What's your name?”

“Hinata Shouyou.”

“Can you count backwards from 100 by seven for me?”

“Uh I can try, 100…93…8-8-6,,,,,,,,79…72….” Hinata slowly goes till he gets to -5 where the doctor cuts him off.

“Okay, very good, a little slow, but good. Do you know what year it is?”

“2022.” Hinata smiled. An easy question.

“I’m sorry sir, it's actually 2012.”

“What, but, it’s not?” Hinata knows it isn’t. He’s gullible but not this gullible. The heart monitor starts to pick up again.

“I'm sorry, but it’s true. An accident like what you went through can be quite traumatizing and disorienting.”

“Can I see a mirror then?” The doctor unlocks her iphone 5 (gross a home button) and Hinata is suddenly face to face with his 16 year old face.

“GUAW!” He Screams. Hinata proceeds to puke all over the floor.

“Sho!” A scream comes from the door to the hospital room.

Hinata looks at the sudden visitor and just before he falls unconscious he manages one word.

“Dad?”

Two days Prior

Kageyama was in the gym doing spiking drills at the wall. There was no practice today, but he had to get better for the spring tournament. Not only for himself but also for Hinata. The loss somehow felt even more devastating without him there to train. Kageyama knew if Hinata was at school he would practice with him.

Then the second years and Kiyoko showed up. Next came Tsukishima and Yamaguchi. After a second the third years came in.

“Now all that’s left is Hinata!” Noya screamed.

“God that idiot will probably be here soon.” Monotoned Tsukishima.

Kageyama cleared his throat that was suddenly heavy.

“He…He won’t be here today. Th-The h-he won’t… uh” Kageyama tried.

“Hey that's okay! Understandable, since we don’t even have practice. Let’s just- just get to practicing!” Sugawara said.

Practice was well on its way when coach Ukai came into the gym.

“Please continue to coach us!” Screamed Diachi. Who bowed.

“Please!” Everyone else screamed and followed him in a bow.

Couch called them for a huddle noting that the excitable orange one was missing. That could be a problem, he hoped his spirit wasn’t crushed before his volleyball career even started.

Ukai said, “ Unfortunately loss is a part of reality, but it is also reality that all of you gave your best and I hope you continue to give your best through the spring tournament and Finals. Now the resul-”

Takeda burst through the door in tears.

“Hey teach, your a little late for pr-” Coach Ukai Starts.

“There was an accident. I’m so sorry.” Takeda looks at all of their concerned faces before he stops on Kageyama. “I’m so sorry. There was a plane accident an-”

“NO!” Kageyama shouts and stands up. Horror on his face.

“We will have word soon. There were survivors. Have hope.” Takeda tried his best to be reassuring, but how could he when his heart is breaking.

“Can you please explain things for the rest of us?” Tsukishima asked with an eye roll.

“Hinata was in a plane crash as of two hours ago.”

Silence.

Except for Kageyama's sobs. Which were soon joined by the rest.
