Work Text:
Meerkat lived on the edge of the sand kingdom with her remaining family. Her dad and her brother died in the war and her mother had to run away with her and her sister. She was five years old when she lost more of her family.
Surely this war has to end soon. She thought while she looked up at the stars. She heard wingbeats a few seconds later and turned to see some sandwings flying towards her hut. Oh no. She thought with panic. I need to warn mother. She ran into her house and looked for her mother.
“What’s wrong?” Her mother asked when she found her.
“Some sandwings are flying here.” Meerkat said. Her mother’s eyes showed panic.
“Get your sister and hide.” Her mother told her as she walked to the front door.
“What about you?” Meerkat asked. Her mother stopped for a second, but continued walking. Meerkat decided she would use this time to find her sister and hide from whatever they were about to face. “Roadrunner?” Meerkat asked when she entered her and her sister’s room.
“What is it big sis?” Roadrunner’s head popped up from her bed.
“We need to hide.” Meerkat said. She grabbed her sister’s arm and pulled her to where their hiding spot was.
“Why are we hiding?” Roadrunner asked with a frightened tone.
“Some random dragons are flying right here.” Meerkat explained. Their mother had told them what to do in case dragons ever showed up.
“Find the dragonets.” Said a voice from outside their hiding spot. “They can’t have gone far.” Meerkat and Roadrunner stayed as still as possible and waited for any and all movement to cease.
A few hours later the searching slowed down.
“They’re not here.” They heard a voice.
“Check the entirety of this desert if you have to.” Another said. “The queens want the dragonets of that traitor.” Meerkat and Roadrunner listened as the talonsteps went away from their house.
They moved away from their spot at least half an hour later.
“Where’s mom?” Roadrunner asked with concern.
“I don’t know.” Meerkat responded. They both checked the hut to see what happened. The place was wrecked.
“I don’t think we can stay here anymore.” Roadrunner said after they went through the hut. Meerkat nodded in agreement. They didn’t find their mother in the house so she must be somewhere outside. They were met with a horrible sight when they found her lying dead in a sand dune with a tail stab through her heart. They had both stayed the night by their mother and cried themselves to sleep.
“Where are we going to go now?” Roadrunner sobbed the next morning.
“Mother said there was a town on the edge of the sand kingdom and the sky kingdom.” Meerkat replied with a depressed tone. “Maybe we can find a place there.”
20 years later, Meerkat was walking through Possibility. Her sister had returned to the sand kingdom when the Thorn became queen but Meerkat couldn't return to the sand kingdom. It just doesn't feel right without mother there. Meerkat thought. She ran into some seawing who was standing in a line.
“Sorry. What’s going on here?” Meerkat said. The seawing looked at her with annoyance.
“This restaurant is finally hiring.” The seawing explained. “I’m going to see if I can get a job here. Maybe then dragons with respect me.” One cranky seawing. Meerkat thought. I’ll come by later today and see if I can take my mind off my losses.
A few hours later she was on her way back to her house but she had one more stop to make. She peaked her head through the door to see a seawing and……. A silver looking skywing? With 3 sandwing tails and were those fangs? What dragon tribe was he? Whatever tribe he was, he was very good looking. Don’t get distracted by his good looks Meerkat. she thought, getting impatient with herself. You have better things to do than tail after some random dragon.
“Hey boss, think you got a visitor.” The seawing said. The silver dragon looked at her. Oh no. He’s even more handsome. Meerkat thought dreadfully.
“Hello there.” The silver dragon said. He even has a handsome sounding voice. Meerkat thought. “We’re closed for the day unless you’re here to see if you can work here.”
“Uh. Y-yeah I am.” Meerkat stammered. The silver dragon looked confused while the seawing had a slight look of amusement.
“Follow me.” The silver dragon said. Meerkat followed him into some type of office. Wait. Could this be Steelblade? Meerkat thought as she remembered one of the stories her sister told her. The mysterious dragon tribe who fought Blister.
“So why do you want to work here?” The silver dragon asked her.
“To take my mind off of some………. unpleasant memories.” Meerkat replied slowly. She didn’t get a reply from him immediately. Although she could’ve sworn she heard him say “I know that feeling.” Under his breath. “And I would like to learn some recipes for when my sister visits.” The dragon nodded in understanding.
“You seem to have potential.” The silver dragon finally said. “I’ll get you on a rotation schedule with Strider for now to see what you both are good at. Name’s Steelblade by the way.” *I was right. Meerkat thought. He is as good looking as Roadrunner said he was. he reached his talons out. “Welcome to the team—-“
“Meerkat.” She said, shaking his talons.
“Welcome to the team Meerkat. You’ll start tomorrow. Unless you have something planned.” Steelblade said.
“I’ll be there.” Meerkat said. Steelblade nodded and walked out of the office. To another room.
“He must see something in you for you to get hired.” A voice said from behind her. She spun around to see the seawing standing in the doorway. “Steelblade doesn’t hire lightly. Either you have a touching story or you have some potential.”
“He said I have potential.” Meerkat said. “And my story isn’t exactly…… touching.” The seawing nodded and turned around. He walked through the exit and disappeared around the corner. Meerkat got up and started her way back home, not able to get Steelblade’s face out of her mind. He is your boss now. You can’t like him that way. Meerkat tried to persuade herself.
