The Beginning (Steelblade)

Summary:

A young steelwing named Steelblade learns the harsh truth that is the early days of dragons.

Work Text:

Steelblade was 2 years old when he lost his father to some unknown threat.

“Go with your mother.” His father said as he handed Steelblade to his mother.

“Where are you going?” Steelblade asked in a curious tone. His father looked at his mother with sadness in his eyes.

“I’m going to be gone for a while. I’ll be back eventually.” After those words his father turned around and Steelblade never saw him again.

2 years later, Steelblade couldn’t sleep and decided he would get a snack.

“He won’t be able to fight his uncle.” He heard his mother’s brother say. Steelblade hid behind the wall and he listened.

“He will have to. It’s the only hope for dragonkind.” His mother replied. Steelblade could hear her sobbing as he wondered what his mother and her brother were talking about.

“He is going to need training and time before he can fight Steeltalon.” Who is Steeltalon? Steelblade thought. He decided this wasn’t the time for a snack and slowly creeped his way back to his room.

The next day, Steeltooth (his mother’s brother) woke him up.

“Come on.” Steeltooth said. “We have a lot to do today.” Steelblade got out of bed excitedly.

“What are we doing?” He asked, completely forgetting what he overheard the previous night.

“I’m going to show you how to defend yourself.” Steeltooth said. He turned around and left Steelblade’s room. Steelblade hastily followed.

2 years later, Steelblade and his mother were on the run. His mother, gravely wounded, and himself injured.

“Son.” His mother said with a weak voice. Steelblade slowed his pace so that his mother could catch her breath. “You must go……… without me.”

“What will I do without you?” Steelblade asked in panic. He had only ever lived with his mother because no other steelwing ever wanted to be near him. She and her brother were the only ones who cared about him. And Steeltooth was killed by the same rogue steelwings that had injured Steelblade and his mother.

“You know what to do.” His mother replied with pain in her voice. “Go without me. I’m only slowing you down.”

“I can’t leave you.” Steelblade said, he could feel tears going down his face. He hugged his mother.

“Make sure that dragons live in harmony.” His mother coughed before she closed her eyes.

“Mother?” Steelblade said. No response. “Mother?!” Steelblade said with panic. His mother didn’t respond. She’s dead. Steelblade thought with anguish. I’m alone and with no one to help me. he could hear himself crying as he didn’t know what to do.

“Hey.” A voice said behind him. Steelblade whirled around, ready to defend himself. “Whoa whoa, no need to be hostile. I’m here to help you.” A steelwing revealed themself from the foliage.

“A steelwing helping me?” Steelblade questioned. “That’s a first.” The unknown steelwing snorted.

“Your mother was a part of an organization against Steeltalon.” The steelwing explained. They held out their talons. “Let us take care of you.” Steelblade looked at the steelwing with uncertainty. After a few minutes he grabbed the steelwings talons and followed them. A few hours later they set up camp for the night. The other steelwing had fallen asleep before him. He couldn’t sleep so he looked up at the night sky. 2 of the 3 moons being full. What will I do without you mother? He thought. He sat there for a few hours before sleep finally claimed him.

Couple years later he was lying in bed reading a scroll as he had nothing better to do. He heard a knock by the door.

“Come in.” Steelblade said as he got out of his bed. It was one of the commanding officers at the door.

“Our leader wants to see you.” The officer said. Steelblade nodded and started his way to the leader’s cave.

“What is it now?” Steelblade asked when he got to her cave.

“I need you to pull a rescue op.” She said, disregarding his inpatient tone.

“Again?” He said with boredom. He was always sent on these and it was at least 3 times a week.

“We are getting close to beating Steeltalon.” His leader told him. “Every time he puts his own dragons in jail, we rescue them and they see the error in his ways. This may be the final push we need to send him off.”

“Fine.” Steelblade said. He didn’t particularly enjoy this as most of the time, the steelwings he rescued never appreciated him rescuing them. He picked up a scroll with the location to the rescue point and started his trek there.

When he got there, he saw plenty more guards than usual. Wonder what’s so special about these prisoners. Steelblade thought with boredom. He snuck through the guards and got to the cages.

“Who are you?” One of the prisoners asked him.

“Your rescuer.” Steelblade replied. Don’t leave the cage until I give the signal.

“What will it be?” The prisoner asked him.

“You’ll know.” Steelblade replied as he undid the lock. He went around the other cages answering the same questions with the same responses. When he was done he went to the farthest side of the camp that was from the exit the prisoners would take and stepped in front of the guards. “Hello cunts.” Steelblade growled.

“IT’S STEELBLADE!!!” One of the guards screamed. One of them passed out. “SOUND THE FUCKING ALARMS!!!” A few seconds later the alarms went off and Steelblade was surrounded by steelwings.

“We got you now traitor.” A different guard said.

“What makes you so sure?” Steelblade asked. He moved quickly and killed about 5 steelwings before going back to the middle in a defensive position.

“There are too many of us for you to fight alone.” The guard said.

“Oh so a challenge finally?” Steelblade said before the steelwings lunged at him. A few minutes later he had killed all of them. “So no challenge?” Steelblade joked to himself as he left the camp and back to the cave.

When he got there, there was a party being held.

“What in the flying fuck?” He whispered to himself as he went to find the leader. “What’s going on?” He asked.

“You did it.” She replied. “You saved the most valuable assets to beating Steeltalon.”

“Who were they exactly?” Steelblade asked.

“Some of his top generals he replaced.” His leader responded. So I guess we just win now. Steelblade thought. Kind of anticlimactic end to this resistance if you ask me.
