I didn’t see you on the road. The rain was too heavy like the gods were pouring bucket after bucket of water straight down. I slammed the brakes and jumped out, expecting a deer or other small creature. Could you imagine how I felt when I saw that I had hit a woman?
Fortunately, I was going slow, otherwise I wouldn’t have found you. Beautiful you.
You had a cut on your head, and you were lying unconscious on your side. You looked like an angel, with your light brown hair splayed around your head, like a nimbus around the head of a saint. I picked you up immediately and sped to the nearest hospital. There was no point in calling for an ambulance; the storm was at its peak and technically, I shouldn’t have even been driving.
When the accident happened, you were thinking about your night. You’d just come from work, and you were thinking more about getting to your car, and what your friends were planning - maybe some drinks and dancing - than you were about the road and the dangers that it held. Your feet hurt and you were wondering about the chances of convincing your friends to stop for dinner when… the first warning that you had was the screaming of brakes before the impact, a horrible thud, and blinding pain.
When you finally reached the hospital, you received urgent care. I watched you get taken up to your room, and I couldn’t just leave you alone, so… I told them we were together. It’s true, even if you weren’t completely aware of it yet. You were lying peacefully on your hospital bed, tubes and the whole shebang connected to you. The steady, even beeping protruding from your heart-monitoring machine kept my heart beating too. When your doctor came in and announced that you had suffered a knock to the head which caused memory loss from roughly the past three years of your life, your loss brought us a new beginning. A better beginning. But, you need rest, and lots of it. So, you get it.
Soon, we’ll be together. Forever.
