Work Text:
working overtime
“I must say, Furuya-san, you work too much overtime.”
“Says someone who just spent the whole night researching the case file.”
“I only do that when the circumstances necessitate it. But you do it routinely.”
Furuya raised an eyebrow.“And how does it concern you?”
“If the Tokyo police system depends on a certain individual so much that this person has to be on-call 24/7, it will surely make the citizens uneasy.”Shinichi said, unswayed. “I personally would prefer to believe that is not the case.”
Furuya did not respond as he sensed a trap here.
“If this is not the case, which is purely hypothetical, then I can only reach the conclusion that this certain individual thinks that the Tokyo police system cannot function properly without him.”Shinichi smiled sweetly.“What an arrogant thought. Wouldn’t you say so, Furuya-san?”
cooking
“Have I convinced you that I can indeed cook, Furuya-san?”
Shinichi is in the kitchen of the Kudo mansion with an apron on. He has got the salmon searing in the pan, smelling of aromatic fat. The rice is cooked and the side dish with mixed vegetables is already prepared. It is certainly not restaurant-level cooking, but a very proper homemade dinner.
Before actually seeing it, Furuya had the image in mind that this high school detective must have to rigidly follow a recipe, weighing every ingredient as if carrying out a chemistry experiment. But he was wrong. Like Shinichi says, he does know how to cook. With all the common sense of normal people.
“I must admit you cook pretty well for someone who almost never does it.”
“Well, Furuya-san, for me, cooking is a chore. I don’t hate it, but I’d prefer if I don’t have to do it.”Shinichi continues as he sprays salt into the pan.“You see, I’m still a student, not some adults whose life is so burdening that they have to channel that stress in various ways, including spending tons of time studying cooking.”
“That someone would for sure stop cooking for you if you keep speaking in this manner.”
“Sorry, my bad. I appreciate all his effort in making delicious food. Now could you please hand me the plate, Furuya-san? The salmon is ready.”
Furuya notices how Shinichi is not too keen on practicing his combat skill
“I thought Sherlock Holmes was your idol. And if I may point out, he is an expert boxer.”
“That is true. Given the circumstances of the nineteenth century, with the police incompetent and crimes rampant, it is practical for a consulting detective to learn how to engage in combat. ”
“Ah, the excuse of changing times. You know some people say that with modern forensics and surveillance, consulting detectives are obsolete.”
“I respectfully disagree with that point of view, but I do hold the opinion that it would be disrespectful to the diligent Tokyo police if one believes that he must prepare himself for violence to the point that he practices combat skills everyday.”
“You don’t have to come up with that theory just to avoid practicing boxing with me at 5 am, Shinichi-kun.”
“And you don’t have to bring up Sherlock Holmes. ”
They looked at each other and laughed, simultaneously.
“Sleep well. And I wish you a very successful morning exercise session, diligent-Tokyo-police-san.”
casual relationship
“I’m sorry if I have caused a misunderstanding, Furuya-San. But we are casual. I thought that was clear from the start.”
“You almost lost your life saving me and you tell me it’s casual?”
“Oh. That.”Shinichi stopped for a moment and wore his innocent smile. “You know I would do that for many.”
“If not anyone” were the words he kindly didn’t speak out loud.
