Work Text:

it was a cold november night, even colder than it usually was. jack was asleep, his room still filled with the lingering scent of whiskey from the bottles scattered around the small space.

quiet footsteps echoed in the hallway, and a tall, lanky shadow reached the open door of jack’s bedroom. it was dave, doing his usual nightly visit to an unaware jack. he stepped through the doorway, met with the scent of whiskey and the sound of jack’s steady breathing. usually, jack wouldnt wake up from the noise, but this night was different.

he shot up from his bed and frantically looked around.

“what the fuck-?!” he shouted, before meeting dave’s gaze. “oh, christ…” he muttered under his breath.

dave’s thoughts were racing at that moment, never would he have thought he would be caught in his late night trips to jack’s house. “sportsy-“ he said quietly, his voice stifling as he spoke. he followed jack’s gaze before also frantically darting his eyes across the dark room.

jack let out an exasperated sigh before reaching under his bed and pulled out a half full whiskey bottle. he took off the cap and drank from the bottle before sighing once more. "dave." he hissed, clearly upset with the sudden home intrusion.

"what the hell are you doing in my house?"

dave stood still, allowing a deafening silence to fill the room until he muttered a response.

"i'm here every night, sportsy. you just never realized it until now."

jack takes another sip of the whiskey. this is going to be a long night. he looked over at the clock that sat on his bedside table. it read 1:32am. he looked back at dave and they stared at eachother for a minute before dave smiled shyly.

jack walked back to his bed and sat down before taking another swig of whiskey. it may have been a bad idea to get drunk right now, but what could he do about it at this moment? not much, thats for sure.

dave watched as the orange hued man drank from the glass bottle. he walked closer to jack and sat next to him on the bed, staying close enough to feel close to jack but far enough away as to not anger jack further.

jack looked over at him and took another drink before putting the cap back on the bottle and sliding it back under his bed. he looked back over to dave and said the last thing dave would've expected him to say.

"yknow what? you can stay. its... its kinda nice to have someone else here."

dave didn't know what to say back to jack, and he couldnt tell if he was being genuine or if it was the copious amount of booze he had a moment prior, but he smiled warmly in response to jack's sudden change in tone.

he watched as jack laid down in bed before laying down next to him. despite the awkwardness of the situation, it felt comforting to the both of them to be this close to eachother. jack rolled over on his side, his back now facing dave.

a few hours passed after the two had fallen asleep, and jack awoke again, having forgotten that dave was in his room and sleeping in his bed. the realization on creeped up on him when he heard the calm breathing behind him. jack felt his heart start racing as he noticed dave's arms wrapped around him, holding him close in a tight hug. dave muttered something unintelligible in his sleep, and buried his face into the space inbetween jack's neck where it meets his shoulders.

for some reason, it felt... comforting to jack to have someone with him at night. he usually never felt like he wanted to have someone close to him at night, and usually he would just drink some hard liquor and let that rid him of any loneliness he felt. but this time, any remaining loneliness was gone simply by having dave by his side.
