Mercy’s greatest fear

Summary:

Harrow, having grown up on the Ninth, is unaware of the small, disgusting, wriggling forms of life that flourish on thalergetic planets. Like most things about the baby lyctor, Mercymorn finds this lack of preparedness unacceptable.

Work Text:

Mercymorn had never enjoyed spending time on thalergy-producing planets, and spent most of the flight enumerating the precise reasons why. This monologue wasn’t delivered to Harrow, exactly; it was more to an unseen, deeply empathetic audience who naturally agreed with everything Mercy had to say, and Harrow also happened to be there.
“…does John think to warn the infants of the grotesque things that can happen on a planet teeming with life? Spiders in your hair? A vagina full of centipedes? No!
“Centipedes,” Harrow repeated. “In my vagina.”
Mercymorn shot her a defensive glare. “It’s more likely than you think!”

Notes:

“Oh, it’s ‘just a joke’, is it, Augustine? Then why would someone have gone to the trouble of making a whole poster to warn people of the danger? Why would — STOP LAUGHING! UGH!”
