Summary:

It's Halloween, and the first years are attending their first high school party! They'll play games, get lectured, and drink a little.

Work Text:

"Welcome, my little kouhais, to your first high school Halloween party!" Nishinoya yells with a grin and a flourish of his arms. It is 8 pm on October 31st, and the 4 first years of the Karasuno Volleyball Club stand in the doorway of the Azumane household, overlooking a sea of costumed teenagers eager to make mischief and misbehave; and Kageyama is going to combust. Why is he going to combust?

Because Hinata is bouncing on his toes as he looks around excitedly, and the movement is making the ears of his Pikachu costume flop around.

Simply put, he’s too cute.

"Woaaaaah! So cool!" Hinata says. "Your costumes are amazing!"

"Thanks Hinata!” Tanaka slaps the first year on the back as they enter the house. He’s dressed as a mummy, the wraps conveniently arranged in a way that leaves his chest bare. “Me and Yuu are doing an experiment to see if girls like cute costumes or sexy costumes more. Obviously, it’s gonna be sexy costumes - Yuu can barely hold a drink with his paws,” He grabs one of Nishinoya’s hands and waves it around, before the libero snatches it back.

“Ah, but see, now I can ask a beautiful girl to pour drinks into my mouth.” Nishinoya says with a confident smirk, crossing his arms. “It’s all about cute. Shoyo gets it!” He tugs the redhead towards him. Kageyama’s eye twitches.

“Oh, I actually wore this to take my sister trick-or-treating, she was Jigglypuff.” Hinata pulls out his flip phone with the too-small screen to show a photo taken earlier that night, Natsu riding on his shoulders and both siblings grinning at the camera. Kageyama squints at the photo alongside his upperclassmen, and a thought comes to his mind.

“Why weren’t you Ash?” He asks.

“They didn’t have an Ash costume at the store,” Hinata grumbles. “But this is way more comfy!” Nishinoya nods emphatically.

“Plus, he’s not a brunette.” Noya says, then thinks for a moment. “I guess you could have gone as Misty if he were a guy.” He adds thoughtfully. An image of Hinata in a crop top flashes briefly across Kageyama’s mind, but he pushes it down before it can get out of hand.

“Pikachu works for him.” Tsukkishima says, and Hinata whips his head around in surprise. “He’s small.” Kageyama chokes on a laugh.

“Urgh! Shut up!” Hinata pulls on the ears of his hood as his face flushes red.

“He’s also powerful,” Kageyama finds himself wanting to comfort the spiker. “and his opponents underestimate him.” He feels his own cheeks heat up and resists the urge to facepalm - that was so cheesy, what the hell - but the smile on Hinata’s face is worth it. He walks further inside the house before he does something stupid, like smile back.

The party seems to be in full swing already, and they are ushered by the second years to the kitchen, in-where sits a table full of red solo cups, beer, mixer, and spirits. Asahi stands beside it, seemingly playing the part of bartender.

“So, the cutest and sexiest things you two could think of was a bear and a mummy?” Tsukkishima asks drily as they line up in front of the table to grab drinks. Yamaguchi snickers.

“We’re- we’re on a budget!” Tanaka splutters, at the same time Noya says “What’s your point?”

“Hey guys,” Asahi smiles at the first years- effectively ending the argument before it begins, “what do you want to drink?”

“Wait, have you guys ever had alcohol before?” Tanaka interrupts the third year. They all shake their heads no. “Awesome! Then we get to introduce you to it!” He grins.

"Just so you guys know, I'm not really drinking tonight- so if you need help or you see anyone that needs help, let me or any of the third years know." Asahi smiles then pauses, thinking for a moment. "Any of the third years except Suga." He amends his statement. Hinata raises his hand. "Uh, yes Hinata?"

"Why aren't you drinking?" The first year asks.

"I don't really like feeling out of control." He shrugs. "Plus, I'm already anxious enough with all these people in my house," he adds with a shudder. "The last thing I need is to be anxious AND drunk." Asahi’s statement makes Kageyama pause as he reaches for a beer- he doesn’t like feeling out of control, either. He’s sure that Hinata will want to drink though, and surely they’d make a competition out of it, and-

"Our responsible ace!" Sugawara comes crashing into the kitchen, interrupting Kageyama’s thoughts and wrapping Asahi up in a big hug. "You're so nice, for throwing the party at your house, Asahi!" He yells into his shoulder. Dressed in a Santa suit, Daichi walks in after him, inexplicably holding what looks to be a skull.

"Sorry about him. We got here early, so he's already drunk." He helps extract Asahi from the vice captain, who immediately latches onto the 2nd years in a suffocating side hug. A sober Sugawara uses a bit too much physical force in his affections, but a drunk Sugawara simply doesn't know his own strength, Kageyama notes.

"Hi guys!" The setter beams down at them, a flush high across his cheeks. "Oh my god you are all so cute!"

“Daichi, why do you have a skull?” Yamaguchi asks as he dodges a cheek pinch from the third year. The captain puts it in Suga’s hand, who releases the second years and then holds the object aloft.

“To be or not to be!” The silver haired boy declares. “I’m Hamlet! From Shakespeare!” He says excitedly. Who? Kageyama looks at Hinata to see if he knows, but he just shrugs in response.

“Oh come on, he’s like the most famous English playwright!” Suga whines.

“We’re not English though?” Kageyama responds, confused.

“Anyways,” Daichi clears his throat. “This isn’t a volleyball club event, so I don’t have any real authority over you guys. But,” His voice drops an octave - it sends a shiver up all their spines. “If you are drinking, and you get out of hand, I will step in.” The team responds in a chorus of ‘Yes sir’ and the captain nods in approval. “Good. Now, I don’t know if you have all drank before, but if you haven’t, please,” He seems to direct this statement at Hinata and Kageyama. “pace yourselves.” The duo gulps. “If you feel out of control, or you need help, come find me, Asahi, or Shimizu. Have fun and be safe.” He ends his speech with a warm smile.

“Awwww, you’re such a dad, Daichi!” Suga coos at him, then gasps. “Dad-chi!” Daichi sighs, but there’s a smile playing on his lips. “Come on dad-chi, let’s go dance!” The captain gives them a wave as he allows himself to be dragged away, the smile on his face growing bigger.

And with that, Tanaka claps his hands. “Alright! Whaddya guys want to drink?”

They end up mostly drinking beers. Kageyama finds he doesn’t care for the taste, but it feels good to have something to hold in his hands. He ends up sneaking back to the kitchen and filling his cup with water instead.

They’ve migrated to the backyard, and have been joined by the rest of the second years, as well as Yachi and Shimizu, and a couple of their non-volleyball classmates. Kageyama likes it more out here than inside- the house was getting slightly claustrophobic. They all sit in a circle now, chatting and laughing.

"We should play a game!" Hinata yells over the music. The group nods in agreement.

"How about... spin the bottle?" Suggests Tanaka.

"Nope, no, overruled." Ennoshita cuts in, making an X with his arms. Narita and Kinoshita laugh. “You just want to kiss Shimizu-senpai.”

"What's ‘spin the bottle’?" Kageyama asks.

"It's a kissing game!" Hinata explains. "Basically, you spin a bottle on the floor and whoever it lands on you have to kiss!" Kageyama’s heart rate picks up.

"And have it land on someone like The King? No thank you." Tsukkishima says in revulsion. Kageyama flips him off.

“Oh!” Nishinoya yells. “Good idea, Tsukki! Let’s play King’s Cup!” He pulls out a deck of cards from his pocket and starts to explain the rules of the game. Tanaka runs to the kitchen and grabs another cup, as well as some cans of cider.

“It’s not fun if it’s all beer. Anyone not have a drink?” He asks. Kageyama raises his hand along with a couple others. Tanaka hands him a can and he pops the tab open. It smells better than the beer, at least. He takes a tentative sip and is pleasantly surprised at the flavor; it’s lightly sweet and crisp, and a bit fruity.

It certainly makes the game more enjoyable- he can’t imagine what it would be like if he was drinking this much beer. After a few rounds, the group is sufficiently drunk, which is probably the reason for what he says on his next turn.

He crawls towards the center where the King’s Cup sits surrounded by playing cards, and picks one up.

“Jack.”

“Never have I ever!” Hinata, Tanaka, and Noya yell. Kageyama makes eye contact with Hinata, and before he can stop himself, he answers.

“Never have I ever kissed someone.” He says. A fair amount of people in the circle drink, including - no way.

“No way, Shoyo’s had his first kiss already?!” Noya laughs heartily, and goes around the circle to slap the redhead on the back.

“With who?” Kageyama doesn’t mean to sound so demanding- he honestly isn’t trying to challenge Hinata here, but he has to know. He sees Tsukkishima raise an eyebrow out the corner of his eye, and Kageyama wills the beanpole to shut his mouth.

“I played spin the bottle at a party in middle school,” Hinata’s face is getting redder by the second. “She was a classmate of mine, it wasn’t a big deal.”

Kageyama narrows his eyes at him. 'He’s making his 'being praised or secretly pleased' face.'

"Nice, Shoyo!" Tanaka gives him a thumbs up. Kageyama feels something ugly curl inside him at the thought of someone kissing Hinata, and suddenly he doesn’t feel like playing anymore.

“Seven!” Someone yells, and everyone points up, except him.

“Kageyama, drink!” Ennoshita calls out. The setter grips the neck of his bottle, debating on whether or not to stand up and leave. He is still looking at Hinata. Hinata looks back at him, a question and a challenge in his eyes. Kageyama keeps eye contact, and drinks.

Things quickly devolve from there - Kageyama puts his emotions in a box and lets his competitive side run the show. After Hinata draws an eight and chooses him to be his “drinking mate,” they abuse the drinking mate rules to get each other progressively more wasted. It ends when Shimizu - when did she leave? - comes back with Daichi, who enters full dad mode, picking them up by the scruffs of their necks and placing them in one of the many guest bedrooms. He orders them to stay put, and returns with bottles of water.

“Drink that whole thing - not too fast, please don’t throw up - and calm down.” And with that, he shuts the door.

“Idiot, you got us in trouble!” Kageyama kicks Hinata as soon as the captain is out of earshot.

“What?! No I didn’t! You got us in trouble!” Hinata smacks the younger boy’s leg. “You kept making me drink when you drank!”

“That’s the fucking rules, moron!” Kageyama snaps. They stare at each other for a moment, and then burst into laughter.

“Oh, right.” Hinata says through giggles. “I forgot, it was so long ago.”

“It was probably only like, half an hour ago.”

“Nah, it was forever ago.”

They sit on the floor in companionable silence as they dutifully drink the rest of their water, taking small sips. Kageyama likes these moments, when they can just exist in the same space. Hinata is rarely quiet and when he is, it feels like he’s sharing something with you. Like he trusts me. He closes his eyes and leans back against the bed.

“Hey Kageyama?” The older boy says.

“Mhm?”

“I’m in the lead.” Kageyama’s eyes fly open.

“What? No you’re not. We were at a tie, we both have 77 wins right now.”

“Yeah, but I’ve had my first kiss before you did.”

“Eh? Why should that count?”

“Everything counts, we agreed. Life events included!” Hinata reminds him, and Kageyama deflates- they did agree on that. Stupid. Of course Hinata was going to do most social stuff first, people like him.

“Whatever.”

Kageyama looks away, crossing his arms. The air between them has become charged, and he can’t tell if it’s positive or negative. Hinata puts his Pikachu hood up and fiddles with the ears.

“We could… make it even.” Hinata suggests, voice barely louder than a whisper. Kageyama whips his head around, jaw dropping.

“What?”

“Well, to be fair, I mean.” He twiddles his thumbs, and Kageyama can’t really be sure because his hood is covering his face, but he thinks Hinata might be blushing. He knows the middle blocker is still speaking but he can’t pay attention enough to stop thinking about the implications of his suggestion. “... and you didn’t get to go to a lot of parties, so, if you want, we can make it even now.” Kageyama squints. What about him not going to a lot of parties?

“Huh?”

“I’m saying I can be your first kiss, Bakageyama!” Hinata shouts, hands in fists.

“Oh.” Kageyama blinks. Ba-thump. “O-okay.”

“But I can-! Oh, you agreed. Okay.”

The setter nods slowly.

“Okay.” Kageyama repeats lamely. Now what?

“I’m- I’m gonna kiss you now, okay?” Hinata slides closer to him.

“Okay.” His voice has lowered to a whisper. They gravitate towards each other, and meet in the middle. It’s soft, short, barely a peck, but it still sends a buzz across Kageyama’s skin. It leaves him wanting more.

“Now,” Hinata clears his throat. “Now we’re even again.” Then it hits Kageyama.

“Wait.” Kageyama narrows his eyes, “Wouldn’t you also get a point if you kissed me?” He asks.

“Hm… maybe? It wasn’t my first kiss though, which is what we were measuring. But if we’re counting kisses, then yeah, I’m in the lead again.”

“Then we kiss again.” Kageyama says, then turns away in thought, his competitive spirit overshadowing his anxiety. “No, you’d always be one ahead of me. We have to make a new competition.” They both think for a moment, and then Hinata lights up.

“Who’s the better kisser?” He suggests.

“Okay.”

They stare blankly at each other.

"Wait, how do we measure that?" Kageyama asks, and Hinata puts a hand on his chin thoughtfully.

"Hmm... maybe whoever makes the other person feel the best?" He suggests. Kageyama thinks for a moment, then nods. With the rules agreed upon, they move on to who goes first, determined by rock paper scissors. Kageyama picks rock, Hinata picks scissors, and Kageyama starts to sweat.

Why did he suggest this? He doesn’t know how to kiss, he just had his first one a minute ago! His breaths start to come out a little shaky, and he stares at Hinata's mouth for just this side of too long, before the middle blocker puts a hand on his.

"Hey, we don't actually have to do this if you don't want to." He says softly. "It's just a dumb competition."

He's giving me an out. Part of him wants to take it, but the other part - the one that savors every crumb of affection, that aches for more - is much louder.

"Every competition we have is a dumb competition." Kageyama replies, eyes still fixated on Hinata's lips. Hinata chuckles a bit.

"Except volleyball."

"Except volleyball." Kageyama agrees.

"Are you sure you don't want me to go first?" Hinata rests his chin on his knee.

"Yep."

"Are you gonna do it anytime soon?"

"Yes," Kageyama says through gritted teeth. He closes his eyes, and takes a breath. And then he leans forward, and kisses Hinata- he moves a little bit too fast though, and their teeth clack together a bit. Hinata pulls back and giggles, and Kageyama feels his heart drop.

"Sorry, sorry." Hinata holds up a finger in the universal gesture of 'give me a moment.'

"What?" He demands. Kageyama didn't think Hinata would be so cruel as to mock him; he can't believe he let down his guard, he should have known better than to open himself to this humiliation.

"Your face was just really cute," He's still giggling a bit, and Kageyama feels his cheeks light on fire.

Cute? Is he mocking me?

"But that's not kissing, Bakageyama."

"What the fuck do you mean 'that's not kissing'?" Kageyama hisses, poking him in the chest, "Then what the fuck do you call that?"

"Okay it is a kiss, it's just not kissing." Hinata explains, "That was too simple and gah, and it's supposed to be more complicated and like, whoosh and gwah!" Kageyama feels the urge to scream, he does not want to be told how much he fucked this up - especially not in such vague meaningless terms. "So, you have to try again. That was too hard and too short."

Wait, what?

"Wait, what?" He must have misheard him. He wants to do it again? Was he actually trying to give advice?

"Yours was only this long." Hinata pinches his fingers together to demonstrate.

"... How long is it supposed to be?" Kageyama asks weakly. The distance between Hinata's fingers grows a couple inches.

"So you have to do it again." Hinata says, and there's a hint of something in his voice, though Kageyama can't parse what - but the chance of another kiss, the fact that Hinata wants another (always one more) makes Kageyama's heart flutter. He takes a shaky breath, shoves down his pride, and musters up the courage to ask for what he's wanted the whole night.

"Show me first." He demands. Something flashes across Hinata's eyes - that hungry look he gets in matches - and Kageyama swallows thickly.

He's not used to having this intensity entirely focused on him- it's unnerving, weird, and exhilarating. Hinata nods, and scooches in closer. He leans forward, tilting his head a bit, and stops just before their lips meet, seeking a final confirmation from the setter. Their breaths mingle in that moment, before Kageyama gives a near imperceptible nod, and then he's being kissed. At first, it's nearly the same as their first attempt, but only for a second; and then Hinata's lips slide between his own, and oh, that is better. Much better. It's annoying how much better it is.

He follows Hinata's push and pull, the movements coming more intuitively. The kiss mirrors their rivalry, matching each other's fervor and passion and trying to get ahead. A hand cups his face and he startles a bit, until the thumb smooths over his cheekbones and he sighs into Hinata's mouth, and feels the other boy smile and pull away- and he can't help but chase his lips, just for a moment. Hinata knocks their foreheads together as they catch their breath, and Kageyama winds an arm around his waist, tugging him a bit closer, so that Hinata is nearly in his lap.

“Like that. And," He moves to his ear, “I win,” That little fucker whispers, a grin evident in his voice.

Kageyama's heart is pounding, his palms are sweating, his skin is buzzing; he feels like he's at the start of a second set, when the team has found their rhythm and things have started to flow - he wants more.

"Rematch." Kageyama says between breaths, and that's all the warning he gives Hinata, before diving in for another kiss. The middle blocker makes a noise of surprise, but kisses back just as hard. Kageyama's more comfortable now - he slides his hands up Hinata's sides, feels him shiver, and then moves up to his hair, threading the ginger locks through his finger. It’s soft

And then an idea pops into Kageyama's head- he's seen people kiss in tv and movies, but his brain goes to the first time he watched porn, when he saw a guy make some girl moan by tugging on her hair. He wants to hear Hinata make that sound. So he tugs the boy into his lap and pulls.

"Ah!" Hinata whines, and breaks the kiss, blinking in surprise seemingly at his own noise. It's more high pitched than Kageyama thought it would be, but just as hot as he imagined. "I, uh, didn't know I could make that sound." He admits sheepishly.

"Looks like I'm in the lead now,” Kageyama smirks. He keeps one hand buried in his hair, and lets the other slide up to cup his cheek, and feels Hinata’s breath hitch. “Shoyo.” The smaller boy gasps, and then they’re kissing again, movements becoming more frantic, more needy. Small nimble fingers untie the cape around Kageyama’s neck, and he breathes into the other’s mouth. Those hands claw up his back, rucking up his shirt from his pants, and tug him closer, and Shoyo is now fully straddling him.

Kageyama draws back just enough to start kissing down his jaw and undoes the first button of his Pikachu kigurumi - so damn cute - to continue to his neck, when he remembers what his own costume was, and another brilliant idea pops into his head.  He bites where the shorter boy’s neck meets his shoulder, and sucks a bit, and Shoyo moans. Gotcha. And then he’s pulled back up for another kiss, and he feels the redhead’s tongue swipe against his bottom lip, coaxing his mouth open enough to lick inside, and he hears himself whine, and they break apart, panting.

Hinata rests their foreheads together, and grins.

“Give up yet, Tobio?” He says, and Kageyama feels a tingle run up his spine.

“Never.” Kageyama grins back.

“Rematch?”

“You’re on.”
