Adam walked into Ben's hotel room wearing a navy suit and light blue shirt. He started to say to Ben "You look nice-" but got cut off.
"Oh my god, Adam. Why are you wearing the exact same thing to the Streamys you wore to our event on Friday?"
Adam sighed, "I'm not. This is a different blazer, my shirt was white on Friday-"
"Yeah yeah, navy suit, boring shirt," Ben said gesturing to Adam's clothes, "It's literally the same thing."
"You get annoyed with any comments I have about your clothes. So why are you ragging on mine?"
"Anything negative you say about what I'm wearing is stifling my self-expression. Me on the other hand, I'm just trying to be a good friend and nudge you out of your comfort zone a little. What happened to that cute shirt with the subtle floral print you texted me a picture of last week I said I liked?"
"I told you I was thinking of wearing that to the premiere. How come you didn't say anything Friday?"
"Maybe I was being a little optimistic you might be saving your nicer outfit for the more widely broadcast event. Could you at least try the shirt on? Maybe you'll change your mind when you see you're still wearing 90% navy."
"I can't," Adam said looking off to the side, "I left it at home."
"Really? Just giving yourself no shot at wearing anything interesting?"
"Look I like wearing what I like."
"Fine. If you didn't bring anything, I'll have to accessorize you."
"What?"
"Just let me add a little pizzazz."
"What could you possibly add?"
"Just close your eyes and give me a minute." Ben actually had no idea what he was going to do.
"Ben, if you draw on my face, I'm going to tweet out we're releasing the extended cut of Okaihau Express and make you edit it."
"I promise, nothing permanent."
"Fine." Adam closed his eyes.
Ben scrounged around his suitcase and he saw it, his key chain from the premiere. He walked over and clipped it to the button hole of Adam's blazer.
"Ta-dah" he said.
Adam opened his eyes and looked down at the small Ben now attached to him. "Oh buddy," he said sentimentally.
That wasn't what Ben expected. "You take it off if you want. It's just something silly."
"No, it feels really symbolic about how the quality of the edit depends on how well we work together. Obviously there's a lot of other people involved, but neither of us could come close to being nominated without the other."
"Of course you manage to turn a key chain clipped to your blazer into something touchy-feely." Ben could feel how hard he was smiling at Adam. He didn't expect to get emotional during the getting dressed part of the evening.
"Wait! I know what will make this even better," Adam said quickly leaving the room. He came back a few minutes later, key chain in hand and clipped the small Adam to Ben's belt loop himself. "There you go. Now both our outfits are complete."
Ben held the key chain for a second; appreciating how he'll literally be carrying Adam with him the rest of the night. Then he gave Adam a hug and said, "Look at the beautiful things that can happen when you listen to me about style."
