The Sun and the Moon

Summary:

When Twilight sparkle becomes a princess and realizes the truth about her reason for existing, she questions everything. Was she only born to be Lunas replacement? Was she actually powerful or was it all fake in order to make her an alicorn? Was her whole like planned out from the beginning? But none of it matters when Princess Luna comes back and the war starts. The only thing that matters is stopping the sun “princess” from destroying the kingdom.

Chapter 1: Purpose

Notes:

Hello! This is an AU of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic! Most of these characters are not mine and I do not own them, however, I have altered most of them dramatically. Because of me changing a lot about them here's a brief description of these characters at the beginning of this book. This is a fanfic inspired by several different media I've seen, I am not intentionally copying anyone if it seems like I am let me know please so I can fix it. Any and all CONSTRUCTIVE comments and criticisms is welcome, I'm young and I make mistakes.

Descriptions of the main 9:

Twilight Sparkle: A bit more like her parents her mane is varying shades of purple and blue, her body a lighter purple and she has stars all over like freckles. She was born a unicorn, and her cutie mark is a white star with a ring around it like a planet.

Fluttershy: She's a wingless pegasus, she was born with wings but due to an accident she no longer has them, and instead has long dark scars along her back. She's a yellow and pink gal with lots of furry friends and a butterfly for a cutie mark.

Rainbow Dash: A mostly blue pegasus, his wings tips are rainbow to match his mane, which is kept in a short messy style. The only incredibly different thing about his appearance is the lack of a back left leg, which appears not to exist.

Pinky Pie: She has a Brown coat, pink hair, wings, and a very bold attitude. Her cutie mark is a collection of three balloons, blue, pink, and yellow, in the shape of a heart.

Rarity: She's a very fashionable unicorn, whos albino. She dyes her mane and tail a shade of purple. Her cutie mark is a trio of diamonds.

Apple Jack: A trans boi with an orange-ish brown coat, blonde hair, and emerald green eyes. Typically had a bandaged leg and a bandanna around his neck. He enjoys braiding his tail.

New 3:

Sunset Shimmer: An orange and red unicorn, and old apprentice of Princess Celestia.

Orchid Dreams: A white-coated, pink-haired pegasus who enjoys love and all things romance. Lives in Cloudsdale.

River Waves: A merpony that can have legs when she wants too, no wings or horn. Mostly blues and greens, bubbles for a cutie mark. They're gender-fluid. They're mostly blind on land, and can see way too well in the water.

The story does however just start with the main 6 from the show, the new 3 come up later.

Also, this does contain LGBTQIA+ themes and content and I will not change that, if you have issues with that then please go read something else (it's not the main point of the story but it is mentioned several times)

I am currently starting a series on my TikTok drawing these new versions of these characters, if you're interested I'm A_Random_Latte on there. I do take requests and suggestions for characters on there. I also am open to suggestions for things to add to this story but I'm not guaranteeing I will add them. I do plan on trying to post once a week but I'll probably throw that out the window when school starts (I'm in high school :/)

Have a fun day/night!!!! :D

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Twilight stared up at Princess Celestia, who stood in the throne room of the castle. She loomed down over her, her mane flowing as if there were a breeze.
"Twilight, you've been doing well in your studies, you are ready." She turned around and nodded for her to follow as she started down the hall.
"Ready for what?" She sprinted to keep up. Always trailing just behind the princess.
The princess did not answer and simply continued down the path. She stopped at a door, used her magic to open it, and inside was a very lavish bedroom. The walls were painted a lavender purple, with a large window on the wall opposite the door. The bed lay in front of the window, with a canopy to cover it. The beds and blankets of various galactic colors all shifted and moved as you looked at them.
"Ready for the final test." She smiled at Twilight, nodded for her to go in, and followed behind her as she did so.
"You are ready to begin, you will need this." She hands her a book with her magic, a very thick leather-bound journal. "I've left you the instructions inside, you shall not fail."
As Twilight turned around to ask a question, she was gone.
She flips through the book and finds it to be a very old spell book from an ancient wizard Starswirl the Bearded. Inside is a letter:

Dear Twilight Sparkle,
At the very end of the book, there is an unfinished spell that Starswirl the bearded was unable to complete. I believe you contain the ability to finish and rewrite it.

She marveled at the book, before flipping to the end to see the spell that was unfinished. Unable to figure out its purpose she cast it, before closing the book, putting it in her bag and heading to bed.

The glowing surrounded her as her body began to go numb. It had started with her hooves, going up, spreading to her whole body. Hooves, then legs, her stomach and back, before finally her neck and head. Her eyes were forced closed, tears leaked from her eyes as the confusion grew. What was going on?! What's happening to me?!  Light and magic swirled around her as her eyes snapped shut. It was so bright, blinding, that went all around her. Then it all went dark, for a moment, warm, and something static pressed against her. Stone still as a statue she stood unable to move a muscle. But even if she could she wouldn't want to, because suddenly the numbness faded and everything felt like it was on fire, especially her back and sides.
She could feel her surroundings change and Celestia's voice faded, the crickets chirped and the rivers flowing were heard instead. There were ponies here she could hear the hooves and the breathing. Or she would, if it were not for the excruciating pain in her back and head. She would scream if she could only open her mouth. But alas it felt as if it were glued shut. The pain faded and her hooves touched the soft grass below. Then a bright light echoed from her as her eyes were forced open, flying open. Just as they did she found large fluffed wings on her back that did so as well.
The group in front of her "Oooed" and "Awed" and as she opened her eyes she realized that it was her friends who stood in front of her.
"Wowwww you look like a princess," Fluttershy walked over and looked at her wings, which Twilight was also inspecting.
"That's because she is a princess." Princess Celestia now stood behind her.
"Hold on a second," Pinky then grabbed a glass full of water out of seemingly nowhere, drank it, and then immediately spit it all out in shock. The rest of their mouths lay wide open, eyes wide, speechless.
"A princess?" Twilight's face was now full of amazement and bewilderment, as she flapped her new appendages uncertainly. "Is there a book on being a princess I should read!??"
"There will be time for all of that later," With that Celestia left, just vanishing into thin air.

After the coronation, things didn't calm down in the slightest. Twilight still had much to learn. The next few days were spent trying to tackle her biggest challenge: flying. She had never done it before and it felt like every time she tried was as terrible as the first. Progress was progress but it didn't seem like she was making any sort of dent in this project.
Rainbow Dash had tried his best to help Pinky too, but neither managed any help as she failed, over and over again. It had been just about a week, but she could never get higher than a few feet, until that seventh day.

"Are you sure you're trying anymore?" Rainbow sat, defeated, against a tree in the courtyard of the castle in Canterlot.
Twilight lay in a grassless part of the yard, due to the amount of crash landings. "I'm never going to get it..." Twilight huffed, closing her eyes for a moment.
"That's not true, you'll get it!" Spike confidently shouted as he brought a tray of drinks for everyone. Handing everyone a drink, he smiled and helped Twilight up. She sighed, but reluctantly started flapping again.
Higher and higher she went, before finally something seemed to click in her mind. Balance when flying was her biggest struggle, so when she finally found the right spot to hold herself everything seemed to make sense.
"Wait! I think I've got it!" She exclaimed, putting herself horizontally to the ground and flying around the group in a circle before landing. Admittedly the landing was really bad, she landed too hard and wobbled heavily trying to steady herself.
Every pony cheered loudly when she did so, Pinky especially so.
"Yay! That's fantastic Twilight!" Rainbow Dash flew up off of the ground excitedly.
Twilight smiled wide, and then sat down, a wave of exhaustion floating over her suddenly.
"That was very impressive Twilight, but you are certainly exhausted, you should go rest darling." Rarity helped her up into her hooves.
Twilight nodded, eyes already feeling very heavy. "Yes, you're right, I'm going to go up to my room, you guys can come with me if you want," she started back inside, turning her head back to them to speak.
"I would like to Twi, but we should head back, we've still got a lot to do to prepare for the Summer Sun Celebration." Apple Jack went up and put his arm around her. "But we'll see you there! It'll only be a few days." AJ took his arm off of her and started back in the other direction for the train.
"I suppose, I'll see you there then." Twilight smiled weakly, before nodding for Spike to follow.
  "Bye guys."

Twilight opened the door silently, with her magic. And went inside, slowly and tiredly. Walking down the hall she heard voices from a room she had never been in before.
On closer inspection, it appeared to be Princess Celestia and Princess Cadence inside arguing. Twilight stopped for a moment and listened close to the door to see what she could hear. Normally she would carry on, but something told her to look. Spike opened his mouth to speak but she put her hoof over his mouth.

"Princess, are you sure this is the right thing to do? Raising her to replace someone else? I know you believe this to work, but are you sure she'll accept it when she finds out? Cadence sounded unsure, worried maybe.
"Cadence, this has been my mission for decades, this was supposed to be Sunset's duty, but she gave up on it. Twilight has the motivation, she'll be fine. Besides, I have bigger kingdoms to conquer.”

Twilight took a hesitant step back, shaking her head. Before a tear could fall she ran out, into her room down the hall. Inside were the same lavender walls and space-themed bed shed grown to love. But it all clicked when she thought about it.

"I'm supposed to replace Princess Luna."

Notes:

A/N Thanks for reading! I'm currently doing a series on my TikTok (@A_Random_Latte) where I draw my versions of these characters (admittedly not very well) and you can suggest which ones I should do next! I've posted Rarity and have Twilights in the works!
