“When I can prepare,” he’d reminded her, in turn. “I haven’t had any time—”
“The only person who’s been here more than you is me,” Mary said. “And I’m not even sure that’s true.”
Stede’s heart had been pounding, and he’d been searching for a way to say no without ruining the show, and struggling to find one, when Mary had offered up the last push that had gotten him to agree:
“You’ll get to do it with Ed,” she’d said.
