blinding light

Summary:

While running in the rain towards a shelter in the woods, Lumine and Xiao have a chance encounter that will change both of their lives forever - for the better. This fic will be a (VERY) slow burn because I really like to get into detail + explore the characters! Hopefully I can update at least a few times a week, but maybe less when school starts - I think I'd like to make it decently long. There probably won't be any spicy scenes in this one because I'm not comfortable with writing them, so please please don't ask. Anyways, if this sounds interesting to you and you also love this ship, buckle up because it's going to be a bumpy ride!

Notes:

——IMPORTANT: I wrote this on my phone because my computer is broken, so if you find any typos please comment so I can fix them asap ;)——

This is based off of the title of the song Blinding Lights by The Weeknd, but I took the title and ran with it, giving it a different meaning. Of course, a disclaimer: I do NOT own any of the characters, settings, or other miscellanea in this story, unless otherwise stated by me. Please do NOT copy my work or translate it to other sites/languages unless I give you explicit permission. I am usually perfectly fine with translation and sometimes cross-posting, but please ASK! If you’d like to do either of these things with my work just leave a comment and I will get back to you as soon as I can with further information. Love you all and hope you enjoy!

P.S. Please let me know what you think of this work! I haven’t written a fanfic in about 3-4 years, since I published my last one when I was about 11 or 12 (called “suffocating emptiness” - so cringe and emo right? lol i’m just kidding but it was a little darker, wouldn’t recommend reading it unless you’re doing a work comparison or have a really, REALLY good reason). Anyways, I’m looking for constructive criticism because whenever I ask my teachers (SCHOOL ESSAYS, OFC I DON’T ASK THEM TO READ MY FANFICS 😭) all I hear is ‘good job’ and I’m not looking for that; instead I would rather hear ways I can improve. I’m sorry about all of these notes but I would really truly appreciate to hear from any or all of you! Okay, I promise this is the actual end of this note (I didn’t want to put it at the end), and I hope you all have an incredible rest of your day/evening!

Also I'm sorry that the chapters are so short right now, I will work on making them longer, but these ones are kind of like a sampler chapter. In addition, I always forget what chapter I'm on when I'm reading a story and I didn't want that to happen to you guys, so I guess I made them shorter lol. Let me know what you would like to see more: shorter chapters + more frequent updates (maybe even daily? depends on how much time I have though) or longer chapters that might take me two or more days to finish.

Chapter 1: chap 1: encounter

-chap 1: encounter-

Somewhere in a forest near Qingce Village, a young lady with her little flying fairy companion sprinted through the rain towards a structure in the distance.  The woman, Lumine, woke up this morning and saw the rainclouds overhead, but she didn’t think much of it.  Unlike what she had assumed, the ominously grey clouds soaked up quite a bit of rain, and they suddenly released the moisture at full force while she and her companion were unlucky enough to be strolling through the forest hunting for raw meat.

They were nearing the structure now, but through the rain neither Lumine nor her companion could see what exactly it was.  They had departed from Qingce Village recently and Lumine sprinted the way she thought they came from, but it was too foggy and rainy to see properly.  She couldn’t risk checking her map now because it would take forever to dry if it got wet from the rain.

Suddenly, her hair started to stand up and Lumine looked around in concern, wondering why this was happening.  She looked down and saw the telltale sizzling white circle honing in on her and her companion.

“PAIMON, WATCH OUT!!” she shrieked, grabbing the fairy and diving away from the circle just in time - but not early enough to prevent it from singing the edges of her hair.

Lumine looked pathetically at her drenched - and now, damaged - hair before grabbing Paimon worriedly, holding her in a football tuck, and sprinting towards the direction of the structure she had seen before.

“P-Paimon, are you okay?” she said while panting a bit due to all of the running.

“Yes, Paimon’s okay, j-just a bit s-scared from the lightning just now… also PUT ME DOWN!  I CAN FLY!” the little fairy screeched.

“Sorry Paimon, but I have to get us there as quick as possible or we might get almost struck by lightning again.”  To this, Paimon gave no response except to fold her tiny arms and feign an angry expression.  Lumine sighed, knowing the fairy really probably wasn’t mad at her, but actually happy that she didn’t have to fly in the rain.

The structure was getting closer and closer, and Lumine could make out the slight stench of wet hilichurl fuzz, but she didn’t think much of it and began to rush up the steps.  This was a bad move for the pair, because as soon as she sprinted up the staircase to the top of the tower, Lumine looked around, realizing that instead of seeing the wet but friendly faces of the Qingce Village inhabitants, she came face to face with a group of about 20 hilichurls sheltering from the rain in their tower.

“Ummm… Lumine?”

“Paimon…”

“RUN!!” The two companions started to speed towards the staircase, only to find more hilichurls blocking their way.  Lumine took a closer look at them and noticed they were surrounded by some type of weird purple glow.  However, before she could inspect it further, one pulled out its crossbow and shot her in the head, causing Lumine to lose her balance.  Thankfully, it was a dud shot so the arrow just bounced off, but she was stunned for a moment.  As she was trying to recover, her foot slipped on the wet balcony and she toppled off of the tower.

“LUMINE!!” Paimon yelled, panicking.  The drop was at least 50 feet, there was no way she would survive if she fell on her head, and any other body part she landed on was sure to be shattered.  Either way, the hilichurls would find her and cook her for dinner while they were waiting out the storm.

Despite the deadly drop awaiting her, Lumine felt peaceful.  She idly wondered if this was how it felt to die by the hands of fate alone - as if what was about to happen was just how her story was destined to end.  Lumine closed her eyes, waiting for the impact, when she was suddenly enveloped by a comforting yet slightly sharp breeze carrying the smell of qingxin and snow.  She opened one eye to see a teal aura envelope her, and moments before she hit the ground, a pair of strong arms encircled her falling body, placing her feet on the ground gently.

“Silly mortal.”

-chap 1, end-

I published both chapters this time of course, I’m not that mean! Anyways, let me know what you think of this chapter and the story so far!  Hope you all have a great day/evening, and hopefully I’ll see you soon! <3
