Black Gives Way to Blue

Summary:

Levi mourns the death of his beloved commander Erwin.

Notes:

This fic was obviously inspired by the song "Black Gives Way to Blue" by Alice in Chains, so listening to it for a better experience is advised, but not obligatory. Have a nice read! <3

Work Text:

The bedroom where Erwin found himself was a humble, white, extremely small, and above all cold one, which now matched the temperature of his body. Outside, the weather was the same as everybody's feelings present at that house: gloomy. Humankind had just lost one of the best commanders who have ever stepped on earth, and it wasn't easy dealing with the pressure, doubt, and fear of what would happen next. What would Survey Corps be without Erwin? Soldiers of the garrison, military police, and, obviously, the Survey Corps were present, roaming and chit-chatting through the little cottage house chosen specifically for Erwin's funeral, each one having the chance to say their last goodbye to the commander.

Sadness, confusion, and anger consumed all of Captain Levi's body. It had already been some hours since the gathering started, and he was one of the few people who had yet to say their last goodbye.

A forced goodbye. It was exactly what that was. This didn't have to end like this, but it was his choice: he didn't know what the outcome would be. Or rather, he knew, but that was the result of the choice he deemed he would regret less.

But he was wrong.

Oh, he was. He was now looking at Erwin's lifeless body laying on the bed, with the green Survey Corps cape covering his body. Levi was completely still, sitting on the edge of the bed, without any expression on his face, without any tear falling from his eyes, nothing. It was like half of him had left, along with Erwin. His devotion vow would haunt him from now on, however, he would carry out his promise no matter what. He would never forget the warm commander, since it was almost impossible not to feel his presence wherever he stepped from now on, it was as if everything around him reminded him of Erwin.

Levi lets out a heavy sigh, closing his eyes as he feels the ache in his throat emerge. He placed his left hand on Erwin's chest, feeling the coldness of his dead body make contact with the warmth of his hand.

"Fuck, Erwin... so many things left unsaid, and not even when you're dead beside me I can tell you how much I..."

Levi was interrupted by 3 soft knocks on the door.

"Levi...?"

It was Hange. They could feel the heavy, melancholic energy that now invaded the bedroom from outside.

No answer. The knocks repeat once again. Silence. From the other side of the door, a heavy sigh is heard.

"Right. I'll leave you alone for some more instants."

And so the voice drifts off, along with its heavy steps along the hallway.

Levi returned his face to Erwin, his mouth trembling due to all those overwhelming feelings that stopped him from saying everything he wanted. Now with Erwin dead, he was sure he wouldn't hear anything.

After all, a dead person can't feel. Much less listen to the foolish feelings of a captain who was madly in love, and now was left with a broken heart.

"Erwin, I..." - he said, grabbing both hands of his beloved

"I'll remember you..."
