Chapter 1: Welcome

Chapter Text

She hastily examined the hospital walls around her, the obnoxious hum of fluorescent lights danced through one ear into the next, her hair was knotted and tangled to her necklace yanking her head forward when she would move, the clicking of shoes rang closer, she didn't know why she was running, hell she didn't know where she was as she rounded the corner a beep began, her eardrums rang she covered her ears but it didn't stop, it didn't stop it didn't-
It stopped, she opened her eyes and a faint ring of the alarm played… it was nothing but a dream she let out a deep sigh.
Zzara lifted her heavy body up to a sitting position swinging it’s legs out of the frilly pink comforters, her feet rested on a plush carpet.
She dragged her feet to a vanity a premade outfit of layered sweaters and frilly accessories were draped over the chair sitting in front of the vanity. She slid onto the stool slowly as she picked through the layers, a soft white sweater sat underneath her fingers. She ran her finger along the embroideries on the front, she tugged it open revealing her bare stomach and pulled it on, the cotton was fluffy against her skin as she wrapped the sleeves around herself and slipped off the stool.
She glanced in the mirror, the reflection stared back at her with the glare of her screen face reflecting on the mirror, her hands fisted themselves in the material as she glared at herself.
Same dream over and over again, She couldn't put the dots together on why she would have such an odd dream. Why would she have such strange dreams of a woman who wasn’t even real, yet she could remember every detail of her face, every curve of her cheek, every freckle and every strand of dark brown hair.
She knew how much that woman meant to her…
When she recalled the dream, it felt as if she was looking at herself, but that couldn't be true its simply impossible, this woman had soft facial features, long brown hair, Zzara had nowhere near that much detail in her face it being a television is all, she sighed trying to push the dream away but it clung close.
She flattened the embroidered sweater against herself as grabbed her bag she heard the beep of a car, looking out the window, it found Amaya waiting on the front lawn waving for Zzara to come down "Oh I'm driving with Amaya to school, aren't I?" Zzara said a little confused she could remember if she had asked or not, but she shrugged, she didn't care.
She trudged down stairs still pulling the sweater tight across her chest. "Are we going to school today or not?" Zzara said a bit annoyed with the other two people that stood waiting for them. The boy looked at her with slight surprise "We thought you would stay home sick."
She gave a halfhearted shrug "I didn't feel like it today." They didn't need to know the reason for the lie, especially not Amaya and Wil, she was sure they would ask her why and well the truth would just make them worry about her even more.
Zzara held her phone close to her face, Joking with Amaya about her dream, while Wil made small talk with Anthony and Lilith. The sun shone brightly and a few cars sped past on the road that led up to the school, Zzara smiled softly she didn't really have many good memories here.
"What's wrong?" Her friends asked, she shook her head "Nothing." She said quickly, they didn't seem satisfied though.
The day went by normally enough, they finished up classes, Zzara and Wil walked to their class together, they shared a classroom and she sat behind the other students. Zzara took note that they were all talking about different things which left Zzara feeling bored. She pulled out her journal, pen in hand she wrote about how she was so bored, she wanted to do something exciting, anything to fill the boredom.
She flipped through the pages of her journal writing in neat script, she hadn't had too many new entries as the year progressed, she liked reading the ones she was proud of though.
Zzara closed the journal setting it aside, as she did, the bell rang, signaling lunch break, Zzara rushed from the classroom as quick as possible, eager to leave the noise and chatter behind.
She followed the other children out the door into the sunlight.
As everyone dispersed to go find food, Something tapped Zzara's shoulder She turned to see a young man in a layered outfit, Wearing a brown leather jacket that complemented the leather decorating the camera that was held atop their neck replacing what should be a human head, next to him stood a slightly shorter young man he wore a long sweater and khaki shorts, If his head was any bit human compared to everyone she had ever met she couldn't tell the brown paper bag resting where it should be would have blocked it, nothing but darkness could be seen behind the wholes that were his eyes and mouth, Zzara's screen lit up a, bright "smile" appeared on screen "Hey Guys, did everyone else already find us a table?" Zzara asked curiously tilting her head to the side, "Yeah" came the chorus, "Let's go sit then"
Zzara and her friends followed their teacher over to a round wooden table. As soon as they set foot into the shade, Zzara sat between Wil and Amaya, "So Zzara how've you been? Is everything ok with your family?" Amaya said concern written upon her features "Yeah, everything is fine" Zzara said glancing at Amaya out of the corner of her eye, Amaya gave her a warm smile in return, it was clear Amaya cared for her and loved her dearly.
"Where' d we find ourselves, huh" Wil said leaning his chin on one hand "I dunno, we're in public school now" Zzara replied a smile growing upon her lips.
"Well there's no shame in not being happy about it!" Wil responded, Zzara laughed lightly. "You don't look upset" Amaya pointed out
"Well there's no point crying over spilt milk," Zzara retorted playfully "That's very profound, Zzara, very philosophical of you." Wil continued "Well maybe you should learn some." Zzara shot back her tone teasing

"Who knows, maybe I will." He grinned.
