Naruto was known for being many things, but the most frequent adjective used to describe him was unpredictable.
Despite having the type of personality where everyone around him could guess what he'd do next, he always managed to go against the grain and, every now and then, do or say something that no one even thought he would do. Even his best friend, the person that knows him best.
Which is exactly how he and Sasuke ended up in such an unpredictable situation.
The two boys were simply hanging out after school in Sasuke's room on his bed, the former reading a book while Naruto laid beside him. From the corner of his eye Sasuke could tell his best friend was contemplating something and he seemed to have been since their final class of the day.
Having grown tired of his silence, and stewing in his own curiosity, Sasuke spoke up without looking away from his book. "What is it, dobe?"
Naruto looked over at him. "Nothing, just…thinking."
Sasuke rolled his eyes. "Clearly. Thinking about what?"
Naruto remained silent. Sasuke scowled, not even reading his book anymore and simply just staring at the pages. Just as he began to think he wouldn't receive an answer and would need to prod some more, the blond spoke up. "You have experience with kissing, right?"
Sasuke started at the sudden question and turned his attention to the boy next to him. "What?"
Naruto looked back. "Like, you've kissed before?"
Sasuke simply stared at the innocent look on the blond's face. When it began to show signs of nervousness he mentally shook himself. "Uh, yeah. What about it?"
There was a small moment of hesitation as Naruto's eyebrows furrowed. "What was it like?"
Sasuke sat back for a moment as he thought about how to answer that. He did in fact have experience with kissing, but, honestly, it wasn't really all that great. The first time had been out of curiosity admittedly. He would constantly hear about how fun it was and how good it could make you feel, and even though he didn't really have much interest in trying it, he did it only because the opportunity presented itself.
Sure, it had been nice, he won't deny that. But he just didn't feel…anything. There were no sparks, no fireworks or any of those ridiculous comparisons people came up with. He didn't feel any excitement nor did his heart rate pick up in speed. He didn't even particularly enjoy the taste.
He just felt…nothing.
The subsequent kisses that followed afterwards had simply been experimental in an attempt to see if he could quite possibly have a better experience than the first. Sadly, every kiss he's had since then has yielded the same result. Sasuke still didn't understand what the big deal with 'making out' even was.
Not wanting to ruin his best friend's mood but not wanting to lie to him either, Sasuke compiled his thoughts into a simple answer. "It was disappointing."
Naruto's brows furrowed deeper. "Really?" Sasuke shrugged. "Yeah, well, you always find a reason to dislike even the coolest things."
The dark haired boy rolled his eyes. "You're only saying that because you have poor taste."
"I do not!" Naruto argued.
"Says the idiot that inhales ramen 24/7." Was Sasuke's instant reply.
Naruto pouted. "Ramen's good."
Sasuke scoffed. "But not good for you, dobe."
"Whatever, teme! Don't change the subject." The blond sat up and faced his chary friend. "Why didn't you enjoy kissing? Kissing is, like, awesome."
The dark haired boy raised a brow. "How would you know? You've never even kissed anyone before."
Naruto huffed and looked away. "So? Everyone says it's awesome so it has to be true." He mumbled "Besides, it looks like fun."
Sasuke chuckled at his foolish friend. "You're so impressionable."
Naruto shoved his shoulder with his own. "Quit changing the subject again."
Accepting that the stubborn boy wasn't going to let the subject go, Sasuke closed his book with a sigh and set it aside. "Why are you so interested in this? I kissed a couple of people. It sucked. End of story."
Naruto gave a scrutinizing look. "Did you even like the people that you kissed?"
Sasuke answered honestly with a shrug. "Not particularly."
Which was true. He had only ever kissed two people before and they weren't exactly people he could say he truly cared for. "Why does it matter?"
"Well" Naruto began. "I've heard that when you kiss someone you really care about, it feels– I dunno. Like, that one simple detail changes everything."
Sasuke looked skeptical. "Does something like that really matter? Look at Kiba. He chases skirts all the time and I wouldn't say he specifically cares about the girls he's been with."
Naruto laughed. "True. But I think he just enjoys the act in general. He told me once that just being attracted to whoever he's making out with is enough for him."
"Kiba's satisfied with any amount of attention he can get." Sasuke contemplated the blond next to him for a moment. "Where's all of this coming from so suddenly?"
Naruto turned away again and the dark haired boy could have sworn he saw a tint of pink on his cheeks. "Just isn't fair, is all."
Sasuke gave him a confused look. The blond turned back around and sighed. "How does someone as grumpy as you get to have your first kiss before I do?"
The dark haired boy scowled. "Naruto, are you seriously making this a competition between us?"
The blond puffed out his cheeks childishly. "So what if I am? You don't even like people and somehow you managed to actually make out with someone before I could."
Sasuke scoffed. "I wouldn't exactly say I 'made out' with anyone."
"Seriously? You didn't even bother to make it fun for yourself?" Naruto placed his head in his hands. "You suck. It really isn't fair."
"Stop being so dramatic, dobe." Sasuke said with a smack to the back of blond's head. Naruto yelped and sprung back up with an annoyed expression. "Why is this such a big deal to you anyway?"
Naruto shrugged. "Honestly?" His body sagged. "I'm kinda jealous." He chuckled. "You actually got to kiss someone before me. Two people even."
Naruto scratched the back of his neck sheepishly. "I mean, I shouldn't be surprised. You're you. And I'm me, I guess."
It suddenly hit Sasuke what it was that was actually bothering his best friend so much. His eyes subtly softened. "That doesn't mean you won't get your chance, dumbass."
Naruto laughed humorlessly. "Yeah right. As if I ever could at this point. I don't even get half the attention that you do, asshole."
"And? Having all that attention isn't exactly all it's cracked up to be, dobe." Sasuke gently shoved the blond with his shoulder. "Hey, if you ask me, I'd say that no one has been smart enough to see your worth yet."
And truly, Sasuke meant it. Naruto is absolutely the kind of person you'd want at your side. Dependable, hard working, loyal, resilient. There were so many different positives one could use to describe the blond, and to Sasuke, it would never be enough.
The two had known each other since they were small and not once had he ever let him down. During times when Sasuke was at his lowest and he had gotten trapped in his own head, Naruto would refuse to leave him alone. He would stick by his side until the dark cloud hanging over his head finally went away. Even if he unfairly lashed out at him, no matter what, Naruto wouldn't abandon him.
It's because of his unwavering friendship and loyalty that Sasuke had an immense soft spot for the sunny blond.
Naruto glanced at him. "Yeah?"
The soft inquiry caused Sasuke's heart to squeeze. "Usuratonkachi."
The blond gave a small smile and bumped against his shoulder gently. "Teme."
"Dobe." Sasuke smiled back just as softly. Naruto leaned against his shoulder and the dark haired boy let him. Naruto had always been affectionate and clingy by nature and Sasuke had long since gotten used to it.
The pair went into a comfortable silence as they leaned into each other. They stayed that way for a while and Sasuke thought that the conversation was over.
He should have known better.
Naruto spoke up after a few minutes. "Hey Sasuke?"
Sasuke had become so relaxed that he had closed his eyes. "Hm?"
"Can I ask you something?" There was a timidness to the blond's voice.
Sasuke was curious. "What is it?"
There was a pause and the dark haired boy suddenly felt a sense of dread.
Naruto spoke up again. "You'd never judge me, right?"
Sasuke's brows furrowed. "You know I wouldn't."
"So if I asked you something completely unexpected, you wouldn't think it'd be weird of me?" Now Sasuke was really confused.
He shoved the blond lightly. "Get to the point, dobe."
Naruto took a deep breath. "Will you teach me?"
That sense of dread grew bigger. "Teach you what?"
Naruto's voice was low but loud enough for Sasuke to hear. "Teach me to kiss?"
The dark haired boy's eyes shot open and he sat up. "What?"
"Please? I know what I'm asking is weird, but–
"Naruto." Sasuke interrupted. "You realize what it is you're asking of me, right?"
The blond's shoulders fell. "I know. But, it's not like I'm gonna get a chance with anyone else anytime soon."
Sasuke scowled. "Are you saying I'm a last resort?"
"No, stupid! You know I'd never do that to you." For some reason the instant response made Sasuke feel better. "It's just that you have more experience with this and I don't have any at all. And I just figured who better to teach me than you?"
Sasuke was taken aback. "You're seriously asking me to teach you how to kiss?"
Naruto nodded shyly. "That's ok, right?"
Sasuke paused for a moment. "But why me? Didn't you say this kind of thing is better when done with someone you like?"
The response was immediate. "You're my best friend and I trust you more than anyone."
Sasuke's heart squeezed once again and he suddenly found himself unable to argue against the sunny blond. He sighed quietly and shook his head, resigning himself to his fate. "Alright, dobe. Come here."
Naruto perked up and moved closer to the dark haired boy. As Sasuke did the same he placed a hand on a tanned cheek. "Just try to follow my lead, ok?" The blond nodded.
Sasuke leaned in and carefully pulled Naruto towards him where they met each other in a soft and timid kiss. It was just a gentle touch of the lips at first but the blond turned it into a hard press.
Sasuke pulled away for a moment. "Gently." He softly commanded. Naruto nodded and leaned back in. "Don't try too hard. Just try to feel it out, ok?" He said against his lips.
Naruto said a soft "Ok" before their lips reconnected. The blond's movements were slightly awkward and shy even, but they also held a hint of eagerness. Sasuke couldn't help but note how soft Naruto's lips were and suddenly Sasuke began to feel how hard his heart was beating in his chest.
Even if it was just simple soft pecks, Sasuke could already tell that this kiss was different from all the others he's had. He found himself wanting to stay connected to the blond, he actually wanted to keep kissing him. He was finally understanding what all the fuss about kissing and making out was about.
Sasuke tilted his head slightly and gently sucked on the blond's bottom lip. Naruto made a quiet sound as he placed his hands on Sasuke's shoulders. Feeling a sudden impulse, the dark haired boy licked Naruto's bottom lip and the blond released a needy sound.
Sasuke pulled away slowly, looking into the pools of cerulean before him. Naruto stared back, biting his bottom lip, and Sasuke couldn't resist him.
Both boys leaned back in for more and their kiss became much more heated. Their lips created a wet sucking sound and Sasuke felt a thrill shoot down his spine. He couldn't understand why but he just needed to feel more, he needed to feel more of this kiss.
He needed to feel more of Naruto's kiss.
Sasuke was beginning to doubt the blond's claims of never having been kissed because his clumsy movements from before were practically gone now and he was doing well keeping up with him. Then again, Naruto was well known for being a quick learner and learning on the fly, so it shouldn't be surprising that his kissing was already getting better.
Sasuke deepened the kiss, sucking Naruto's bottom lip into his mouth again and causing the blond to lean closer. The action caused him to make another soft sound and Sasuke could feel the vibrations in his mouth. Needing to feel more, he reached up with his free hand and ran his fingers through Naruto's golden unruly strands.
It was an action he always did when the two were alone during their most calming moments. The first time around, Sasuke did it on a whim and the blond had teased him for it for the rest of the day. He felt quite vindicated when not even a week later Naruto did the same to him. The look on his face when he realized and pulled his hand away had been satisfying.
But even after that, it was a habit the two still shared to this day. Sasuke couldn't explain it but it was something that just…felt right.
Sasuke gently scraped his fingernails against the blond's scalp and he swore he heard him purr.
He carefully titled the blond's cheek and deepened the kiss further and flicked the tip of his tongue against Naruto's lips. It seems he had the same idea because suddenly Sasuke felt the blond's own wet muscle touch his and he couldn't stop the sound he made if he tried, a sound mirrored by his kissing partner.
Sasuke inhaled a deep breath at the contact as the pair began to explore the insides of each other's mouths. The taste of him– The taste of Naruto...
He didn't know what anyone was on about with describing a kiss as 'fireworks' or 'sparks'. That didn't even nearly come close to what is was that he was feeling right now.
This was not a mere spark. He felt as if his body, his blood was on fire, a fire that had been ignited but Naruto. By his touch, by his taste. By the little sounds of enthusiasm he made with every second they spent connected by their lips.
Sasuke rubbed his tongue against Naruto's and he felt his grip on his shoulders tighten. They somehow managed to close the gap between them even more and their tongues glided against each other.
Sasuke continued to thread his fingers through Naruto's hair. He always did enjoy how soft it was, now matter how many times he felt it slide against his fingertips.
Unfortunately, the need for air arose and Sasuke was forced to reluctantly break their kiss. He left a small amount of space between himself and his best friend and he took a moment to look him over.
Naruto's cheeks were tinged red, his lips were wet and swollen and his eyes were glazed over with something that Sasuke couldn't quite place. Whatever it was it caused those blue eyes to darken from their usual cerulean to cobalt.
Sasuke liked it.
He wondered if his own expression reflected the blond's.
"Wow." He felt more than heard Naruto breathe against his lips.
Sasuke responded with a soft "Hn" and gave those swollen lips a soft and chaste kiss.
It was at this moment that he realized that the blond must have felt the same fire in his own veins because he all but lunged at Sasuke as he latched back on to his lips, causing an unexpecting sound to escape him.
Naruto kissed him exuberantly and deeply and Sasuke didn't have it in himself to stop him. He couldn't explain why but, despite the original intention behind his current actions, he didn't actually want to stop kissing Naruto.
Something about this kiss, something about kissing Naruto, blew every single instance he's ever had out of the water. No one had ever made him feel like this. No one had ever made him feel like he was burning from the inside, a burn so pleasant that he found himself wanting to feel over and over again.
It was a feeling that was beginning to consume him.
This was the first time Sasuke had ever genuinely enjoyed kissing. He wasn't sure if it was the feeling it gave him or the taste of Naruto's lips and tongue. Perhaps what the blond had told him before might actually have rung true and maybe it all had to do with who it was exactly that he was kissing.
Maybe it was a blend of all three. Either way, Sasuke was growing addicted.
He didn't allow himself a moment to dwell on what that could mean.
Their heads tilted at the same time and their tongues sought each other out, as if desperate to feel each other again, and both boys released a sound of pleasure at the sensation.
Sasuke felt like his lips, his tongue, his skin was tingling and a sudden thought occurred to him that he wanted Naruto to feel this tingling too.
He broke their connection for a moment and began nibbling on Naruto's bottom lip. The blond made a noise that resembled a whine and Sasuke soothed his bite with a lick of his tongue. Naruto being Naruto, he leaned in and bit the dark haired boy back softly, giving the spot a gentle lick of his own before their lips reconnected, as if they were magnets drawn to each other.
Sasuke felt something in himself, something deep in his being that wanted to do something… more with his best friend, but he didn't know what that something was. He only knew that he wanted it.
They let their tongues dance for a while longer before finally pulling away and ending their intense kiss. Naruto leaned his forehead against Sasuke's, who returned the gesture, and the two took their time catching their breaths. It took everything in Sasuke not to lean in again.
As the two of them sat there, Sasuke used the silence to recall the last several minutes. He couldn't exactly explain what it was that just happened between them or why things had gotten so intense so fast. All he knew was that, no matter how much he looked into himself, he didn't regret a single second of it.
After spending a moment in comfortable silence, Naruto giggled softly. "Thank you."
He didn't know if he was still caught up in the moment or if the breathiness of Naruto's voice affected him, but as a response Sasuke placed a tender kiss on the blond's cheek. When Naruto smiled demurely but brightly at the action Sasuke felt the corner of his lips pull upwards.
The pair separated and Naruto resumed his previous position of laying down next to Sasuke. He laid down on his side, facing the dark haired boy, and Sasuke could see that the blond's smile still hadn't faded.
Sasuke grabbed his book but didn't make an attempt to resume reading it. "So, how was your first kiss, dobe?"
Naruto chuckled. "You kiss your exes like that, teme?"
Sasuke actually laughed. "You want the truth?"
"Duh." Was Naruto's instant response.
Sasuke looked over at the blond. "I actually haven't." He reached over and gently threaded his fingers through Naruto's hair. The action caused the blond to close his eyes. "They were always just brief pecks and completely unenjoyable. Nothing really worth remembering." He shrugged.
"Ha! So you admit that kissing me was fun." Naruto teased.
Sasuke rolled his eyes but didn't deny the claim. It was true anyway. As if his previous partners could ever compare to the sunny blond. "You didn't answer my question."
Naruto's expression softened. "It was good, teme." He answered honestly. "I liked it a lot."
"Hn." Sasuke gave a small smile and gently scratched the blond's scalp. He felt Naruto move closer towards him and lean into his touch.
"I'm glad it was you." Naruto said in an almost whisper, but Sasuke heard it loud and clear.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"I'm glad you were my first kiss." Naruto didn't see the way Sasuke's eyes widened at the sincerity in his words, or the way they turned into a look so soft as he all but melted.
The words slipped out before he could even think about what they meant. "I'm glad I was too."
Naruto leaned closer to him and Sasuke didn't let up on his head scratches.
They remained that way for a while, Sasuke gazing at his relaxed best friend. He couldn't seem to take his eyes off of him.
The silence was interrupted after a few minutes. "Hey Sasuke?"
"Hm?"
"Can we…maybe…do that again sometime?" Naruto asked shyly.
Sasuke twirled a lock of blond around his finger. He smirked softly. "Yeah? You want to?"
Naruto nodded. "Yeah, I really do."
Sasuke realized right then and there how much he too wanted a repeat of the evening between them. "Yeah, dobe. We can do it again."
He watched as Naruto smiled and the serene look on his face made him feel that he had made the right choice.
Sasuke sat there, playing with Naruto's hair as the blond began to drift off to sleep, and he placed this unpredictable evening on his lists of favorite moments in his life.
Perhaps he should have been more concerned about the fact that he made out with his best friend. Maybe he should have been concerned with how little and weak of a fight he put up when Naruto asked him to. And maybe he should really be worried that he really wanted to do it all over again.
But he wasn't. Because he had nothing to worry about.
Naruto was his best friend and even though he was admittedly weak for him, he trusted him completely. Sasuke felt the soft spot he held for him grow immensely.
He continued to gaze at the now sleeping blond and his eyes drifted to his lips. Sasuke couldn't help thinking that he finally found someone worth kissing.
He chuckled quietly. "Of course it had to be you, usuratonkachi."
Because honestly, in hindsight, who else would it be?
