Work Text:

(After defeating dio, he goes to find kakyoin before helping Joseph so that’s where this takes place. Instead polnareff helps Joseph in the meantime before jotaro can get to the ambulance)

Dio’s body erupted into blue flames, the ground was stained with his stolen blood escaping his tattered corpse. Star platinum had landed the finishing blow cracking The World to bits, the battle was finally over. Jotaro stood and watched this strange flame for a minute, his body was overflowing with adrenaline, seeing his foe lifeless on the concrete bridge gave him a sense of relief. The journey had come to an end and he could finally return home with all of his newfound friends.

He let out a sigh while putting his hands into his pockets and making his way to polnareff, who was located fairly close to the bridge. Jotaro saw him sitting up against a building, he seemed gloomy but upon seeing jotaro a big smile crossed polnareffs face, he got up from where he was sitting and ran over to jotaro.

“So did you do it?!” He questioned “Did you kill him?!” To which Jotaro would respond with a silent nod and a short lived smile. Polnareff was easily excitable and given Jotaro’s response it didn’t take him long to engulf jotaro in a hug. “I knew you could do it Jotaro, I never doubted you for a second.”

“Yeah? We’ll get off me, I don’t need any more of my bones broken.” Jotaro said with his typical sour tone as Polnareff let go of him. “Ah, sorry Jotaro, I’m just glad your alright” Polnareff smiled but there was something missing and he couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was.

“Where Kakyoin?” Polnareff figured out what was missing, kakyoin wasn’t around.
“The last thing I heard of him was from the old man, he relayed the message about how dio’s stand had worked.” Jotaro said a part of him felt crushed at the mention of his grandfather, but he couldn’t make himself vulnerable, especially now.
“I wouldn’t worry about him though, I’m sure he’s out looking for us. We should tell him the good news!” Polnareff said as he started to walk ahead “I guess we should go find him then.”

The pair began to make their way around the city, people seemed scarce and everything was quiet. Jotaro couldn’t help but notice an odd guy feeling of intuition that something bad could have happened to kakyoin but for now he decided to ignore the thought and keep his eyes peeled. As they both walk below the starless sky Polnareff noticed kakyoin foot hanging off the edge of a building, he nudged Jotaro and pointed up toward the brown shoe. “He’s up there! Hey kakyoin we’re down here!” Shouted Polnareff while walking towards a ladder that scaled the side of the building, Jotaro followed behind his friend, a smile crossed his face as he thought about how kakyoin would react to the news of defeating dio. They both started to climb the tall ladder to reach the top of the building.

In his mind, Jotaro saw Kakyoin as his best friend although vocally he would never admit that. Jotaro felt that Kakyoin was able to understand him better than anyone else, which provided him with a constant sense of relief whenever kakyoin was nearby, in other words he felt a comfort that couldn’t quite be described around him, things felt sound and secure in his presence. That’s why Jotaro would choose to share rooms with Kakyoin if given the opportunity. They usually stayed up and had lengthy conversations about life after their journey which jotaro would display a more sensitive side of himself during these long talks.

Polnareff was climbing ahead, he was nearing the top of the building with Jotaro just behind him. Polnareff placed his foot on the last rung of the ladder and made his way to the top, he quickly turned around and held his hand out to give Jotaro some help up the last step. Jotaro grabbed Polnareff’s hand and was forcefully hoisted to the roof of the building. The roof didn’t have much too it except a couple air conditioners and a rickety water tower which to the looks of it Kakyoin was on the other side of.

Polnareff excitedly made his way to the side of the water tower “Kakyoin you won’t believe this—“ polnareff was cut off by the feeling of his heart plummeting in his chest, he started back up. What he saw before him shook him deep to his core, this feeling was one all too familiar for him. His breathing was sparatic and all he could do is just stare in silence. Jotaro watched Polnareff’s reaction to something and wanted to see what was so frightening, he made his way over to the side of the water tower where the two of his friends were. He approached Polnareff and then turned to the side of the water tower and his eyes had met the devastating sight. Kakyoin laid limp with a gaping hole protruding his stomach, the water from the tower was tainted a deep red flowing slowly from the busted tower and into a puddle on the roof.

“K-Kakyoin..?” Jotaro whispered with shock devouring him like a beast. He ran to Kakyoin and crouched beside him, looking at best friend’s expressionless face. It sent a shiver down his spine signaling a few tears to escape from Jotaro’s once serious eyes.

“H-hey wake up idiot… Come on Kakyoin. I-It’s time to go home.” Jotaro choked out through tears as he place a hand on Kakyoins cold cheek slowly bringing Kakyoin’s head into his chest, he held his friend gently within his grasp and silently weeped into his light red hair.

Polnareff sat down with his head in his hands, he was in disbelief as well. First Avdol then Iggy and now this? He felt a crushing feeling in his chest. How could this have happened? When did it happen? He had so many questions that could never be answered.

“I can’t lose you Kakyoin please…” Jotaro muttered under his already shaky breath. He continued to talk to the empty body of his friend. “Wake up damn it! We were supposed to make it home… come on… come on…” His voice was crumbling to pieces as he grieved, the tears staining his tough exterior. Polnareff approached Jotaro and crouched down to his level placing his hand on Jotaro’s shoulder. “I think we should go…” Polnareff said softly “I-I’ll make sure the Speedwagon foundation catches word of this okay? You stay here with him.” A few tears ran down Polnareff’s cheek as he looked at a broken Jotaro staring back at him. There was no reply from Jotaro instead he just sat there with Kakyoin in his arms while Polnareff walked away and went down the ladder to relay the solemn news.
