Making Progress

Summary:

April watches Space Heroes alone, until she's joined by a certain someone who scares the living daylight out of her 24/7. Usually.

Notes:

This AU came to my mind weeks ago, but I never shared it with anyone besides my friend SHIRAIKASA. Basically the jist of this AU is that the turtles died and are now in a purgatory (aka the empty SEKAI) basically helping April (and Casey) find their true feelings ig lol. The turtles' personalities are completely different, and Leo takes on Kaito's personality (in other words, a complete bastard).

I wrote this weeks ago but I never posted it until now.

Work Text:

April was supposed to be studying for an exam later in the week, but she decided that would wait until later, and instead wanted to spend more time in her own little world. She leaned against one of the small concrete pieces littered all over the empty place, tablet in both her hands as she stared intently at the screen. An episode of Space Heroes was playing, it was probably one of her favourite shows. Ever . She liked seeing all the merchandise at conventions, and even bought some for herself.

Too bad no one else cares about this silly show.

She went onto the next episode when she could feel a presence behind her, at first she didn’t care, it could’ve just been Raphael, wondering what she was watching, or perhaps Donatello, wanting to show her something he made out of the guyed towers, or maybe even Michelangelo, wanting to play with her in a game of tic-tac-toe. She just hoped it wasn’t…

Turning to face the person, she could feel her body freeze for a second. Towering over her was none other than Leonardo.

‘God-motherfucking-dammit.’

He sat in a hero position on the abandoned stage piece, eyeing her and the tablet, but more on the tablet and less on her.

God, he was so intimidating for no reason. Well, besides being able to bite through skin into bone, Casey learnt that the hard way and had to get stitches. At least they all had a good laugh. In the end, they all knew not to mess with this turtle. He always seemed so… pissed off. For whatever reason.

All she had to do was ignore his presence.

Easier said than done, right?

Wrong.

This time he seemed a bit clingy, not on April but more on what she’s watching. Maybe he was entertained by Space Heroes, too? She just wanted to brush it off, but god this guy’s creepy…

“C-can I h-help you?” She stuttered, and Leonardo just looked down at her with his empty cobalt blue eyes.

“No.” He replied before looking back at the tablet. April swallowed before pausing the episode, which gained Leonardo’s attention and made him look back down at her.

“Y-you seem to be… i-interested in this show.” She could feel sweat falling off her head in nervousness, and she could probably tell the turtle was staring straight down into her soul.

He shrugged before saying, “more or less,” and he got up. Sure, he was a lot shorter than her on the floor, but her sitting and him literally standing over her made everything terrifying. Just after a few minutes of having a staring contest he finally jumped to the ground and began walking off.

“Wh-where are you going?” Her voice was small, yet it was loud enough for him to stop in his tracks.

He turned to face her, “nowhere,” he began playing with his fingers, “there’s nowhere to go in this place. No one else to go to.” And continued walking away.

“I didn’t mean you could leave…” She looked back down and continued watching Space Heroes.

Just before one of the infamous scenes, April could feel Leonardo’s presence again but closer to her. She turned to her right to see the turtle right next to her, eyeing the tablet once again. It made her jump in her spot as she froze up again.

“Am I bothering you?” he asked, not looking away from her tablet.

April shook her head, “n-no, of c-course not!” She’d never gotten this close to him. Normally, Mikey was the one who liked the physical contact, not Leo! Yet, they were literally touching shoulders. She’d bet that if Donnie was here he would start rambling about how they weren’t actually touching because different atoms don’t actually touch one another- but that’s besides the point. Normally, the blue-clad turtle would stand at least 5 feet away from the others, and anyone who tried to get closer would get hissed at. This was a lot scarier than him just glaring at her.

She could feel chills going down her spine, which made her move away from him instinctively. He didn’t even notice it, still watching the Space Heroes episode.

“D-do you want to hold it?” She bluntly asked, what was she thinking- of course he wanted to hold it!

Looking up at her, he nodded, “sure.”

She held out the pink cased tablet, her natural coloured smaller five fingered hands let go of it once his green bigger three fingered hands took it from her, resting it in his lap.

They both stared at the scene in awkward silence, before April piped up, “did you ever have Space Heroes before you arrived in this place?”

Leo shrugged, “Don’t know. I don’t have a clear memory from before I ended up here.” He continued watching, then pointed at Captain Ryan, “what’s his name?”

“That’s Captain Ryan, he’s the captain of the Dauntless, of course. It’s in his name.”

“And him?”

“That’s Crankshaw, Captain Ryan’s right hand man.”

“...I like Captain Ryan.” He quietly spoke, continuing to watch the screen intently.

April nodded, before scooting closer and watched with him, “me too.” She wanted to start rambling to him about the show, but she didn’t want to get shutted up by a bite to the wrist, so she stayed silent for him.

Maybe this aggressive, hand-biting turtle wasn’t all that on the inside, maybe he had a good side to him? Wherever it was, she was slowly making progress on finding it.

She just wishes she could find her true self too.
