Work Text:

"Hey! Sans?? Asshole- I know you're here!" A familiar gruff voice cursed out to seemingly no one as he stomped into Snowdin, his red eye glowing and his jacket fur fluffing up like fire. He looked unnerved with a mix of aggravated and scared.
A nervous sweat trickled down Reds face, where the hell was everybody?? Ruins, no one, Snowdin, not a goddamn soul! Red was really freaked out, it was visible by how he looked when he stepped into the first pile of dust in the Ruins, It was like someone had gone through and killed everything that moved! But that wasn't possible, this was Classic's universe, they had little to no threats here. Where was he???
Red felt his breath quicken as he opened the door to the shop, nothing but dust in place of the bunny lady who ran the store. The edgy skeleton's eyes narrowed in anger before stomping out of the store, whoever did all of this was fucked in every way. The skeleton stomped down the path that made up the small town of Snowdin, his teeth bared as his eye light flared a fiery of red.

The skeleton walked up to Grillby's and slammed the door open with a slam, his red eye glaring at the dark room, the only light there came from the door he had just opened.
Fell's breath heaved a bit as he saw movement in the dark. "Who's here?! Who the hell is responsible for this?!" Fell growled before a bone attack shot directly at his head, shooting past faster than a bullet.
"Shit-!" Red cursed as he ducked, sending three more bones in retaliation, all crashing into the bar as the being in the room ducked behind a booth.
"Goddamnit- I know Papyrus-! Just-.. Let me handle this."
A familiar voice hit Red's skull like a brick.
"... Sans?" Red felt his soul lift a little as a small smile crept to his face and small red tears pricked at the corners of his eye sockets. "Sans- Fuckin' hell you're alive-!" Red got no response to his happy words as a bit of relief seeped into his voice, only small murmurs being heard from behind the booth.
The edgy skeleton found the silence odd as he walked into the room, a few snowflakes following him and melting on the ground as he leaned carefully around the booth, two new eye lights staring back at him from the darkness, one red and one red-blue.
Sans' breath seemed to quicken in a panic, his eye lights zooming around before he attempted to teleport, Red quickly grabbing his former partners shoulder. "H-hey! You ain't gonna leave that quickly-!" Red growled as he was teleported with the other skeleton.

They fell into the aqua esc grass of waterfall, both falling onto their tail bones. Red rubbed his head as he got a good look at the other skeleton.
Sans rubbed his wrist with a gloved hand, him fixing his hood swiftly like a fear jolted him into doing so before getting up and running away, leaving Red to chase after him.
"Wait-! Sans you can't just leave and not tell me what the hell happened while I was gone-!" Fell panted a little as he started sweating, taking sharp turns to follow Sans over the bridges and pathways of waterfall, near falling over into the water a few times. Everything was going so fast, he near missed the piles of dust that littered the once beautiful land.
"Goddamnit- Sweetheart, just listen to me-!" Red huffed and puffed as all movement seemed to stop, Sans stopped moving as a bit of wind went through the underground, the strings of his jacket flipping around in the wind as his eye sockets widened at the nickname.
Sans turned to face the other slowly, Red had his hands on his knees and had an expression filled with concern lacing every single harsh feature, panic lacing his eye lights, now white to save energy. The edgy skeleton huffed for energy as he heard his loved one begin to speak in a voice so eerily familiar to Red.
"'Sweetheart'? Now I haven't heard that name in a long time." Sans chuckled a little, placing a hand on his head as he smiled his normally goofy smile, though something new lied at the edges, something indescribable.
All Red could say about it was that it struck a fear into his soul, a horrible gut feeling.

Red's eye sockets narrowed as he stood up straighter, determination in his gaze. "... What the hell happened here?" Red spoke with his usual authority, rubbing sweat from his forehead with his jacket sleeve, he really hated running, hell, he hated all of this. Reds gut was screaming at him to get out of this place, tugging at his very soul.
"I feel like that is obvious, Red, Though I'm sure Paps can inform you on that part of the script." Sans closed his eyes cheerfully as he put a hand up like he was presenting an item next to him, the other in his jacket pocket, he seemed like his usual self surprisingly. It was surprisingly eerie since it was so empty.
Red went to reply but heard Sans hum like he was agreeing with someone. "Papyrus, don't tell him that part, it's embarrassing." Sans spoke with annoyance as he looked away, continuing to bicker with someone who wasn't there, letting Red's eye sockets widen as everything hit him like a truck.
"... They're dead.. You.." Red's look of horror got replaced by anger as he stomped forward, stopping in front of Sans, grabbing him by the collar to look him in the mismatched eye lights. "You-.. You killed everyone here-! Why?! They didn't do anything wrong! All they were trying to do was live their fuckin' lives!! And you just took that away?!" The fire that was Red's jacket fluff flared as his red eye light glowed brighter, anger filling his expression as Sans simply smiled.
"Heh, I saved them from a worse fate. You will never understand, will you?" Sans chuckled as he leaned forward, Red stepping back from his former partner as fear laced his eye light, his expression following suite as his former friend took the higher position of authority.
"You lecturing me on killing people? I haven't heard a Joke that bad in a while." Sans laughed a bit, he seemed surprisingly calm.
Red let go of him and looked away, stepping back. "... You're fuckin' crazy." Red growled in frustration at the other, only getting a small hum in response, making Red feel otherworldly dumb, like he was the bad guy here.
"Crazy?" The sans of this universe laughed a bit, scoffing in the others dismay. "You'd be too if you knew what I know." The skeleton tilted his head at Red, leaning over to see Red's full expression, seeing him this mad was surprisingly cute in Sans' eyes. He was like a mouse in Sans' game of Cat and Mouse.
Sans stepped closer, placing a hand on Red's chin so he'd look into Sans' crazed eyes. "You and I aren't so different, you know? I can see how we got along so well."

Red hissed as he shook his head out of his former friend's grasp. "The hell's that supposed to mean?? You murdered every single monster in this universe!" The edgy skeleton spoke with a rage as he stepped back away from Sans, his gaze narrowed as his teeth bared. One question shot through all the rest of questions filling his skull, where was Papyrus?
Sans simply smiled. "And your universe is filled with natural born killers, I'm sure you've murdered someone before, right?" Sans approached Red, leaving him to back up away from the so-called lunatic. "You know what it is like to be a murderer, the rush of it all, the ache of knowing it's wrong but feeling so right." Sans continued to approach, his voice getting stronger and more deranged as Red backed up, near reaching the edge of the river behind him. "The love of seeing the little number of our stats rise as our attack plunges through their body, the life drain from their eyes as-"

"SHUT UP-!"

Sans was cut off by an unexpected tone of voice, one filled with sorrow and pain.
Red was crying, red tears streaming down his face as he fell to his knees, placing his head in his hands. He seemed distraught as his sobs filled the still air as he cried into his hands. No one could tell what he was thinking about.
Sans' eye sockets widened a bit as he looked down at his former partner, him stepping back a bit. He didn't know fully what he thought would happen, nor what he expected. "U-uh- Hey-! Stop that..?" Sans spoke with a bit of concern in his voice, but also some confusion, he didn't know how he was supposed to do this. 'You aren't good at this, you aren't good at anything but taking people's lives. You're a horrible monster.' A thousand voices filled his psyche as Sans tried to assess the situation.
He hurt this monster who had given him so many good memories, so many good times.. But Red wasn't there to help Sans, he disappeared for weeks, months maybe.
Sans shook the thoughts away, trying to clear his mind to no avail, leaving him to crouch down and try and see how he could help Red. A million voices told him not to, but something in his soul longed to do at least something.
'That isn't what you thought when you plunged a bone through your brother's chest.'
Sans hissed back his fighting words before he brought out some courage.
The lunatic took off his jacket, hating the feeling of the light on his eye lights, hating showing his face to all the ghosts of the monsters he killed, he hated all of this.
Sans hesitantly placed the dust ridden jacket on Red's back slowly, his gaze scribbly in an unease and fear before he quickly teleported away so he wouldn't have to see Red's judging eye lights. Sans couldn't bear another soul who hated him, especially not someone who had cared about him.

Red felt the polyester on his back, him quickly looking up, expecting to see Sans' kind smile, his sweet face, but finding only a gust of wind in his place. He had left.
The edgy skeleton rubbed away his tears, his gaze cynical and judging of his crying as he reached up to the jacket on his back, finding it soft but grainy in some bits?
Wait.
Red threw the jacket off him and jumped away from it, the jacket lying on the ground close to the edge of the river. Part of Red hoped it fell into the river and was carried away, Maybe that would wash the dust off of it. Another part of him wanted to save it from the aqua waters, keep it safe.
Gods what was he going to do now? He couldn't leave, the way he came already closed, he was stuck here until the rift opened again.
Perhaps waiting it out was all he needed to do? Talk to him? He already tried talking to that mad man, and what did that do? Nothing but bring up bad memories.
This was gonna be a roller coaster.
