Work Text:
Anxiously pacing around is Donnie's favorite pastime when he's waiting for someone. Especially when they're late. He looks up from his phone again, for what must be the tenth time, and glances back down just as quickly when he doesn't see the person he's waiting for.
He types in his reply to whatever Leo said, hoping to continue their mindless conversation that he started only to try and get his mind off of how awkward he must look. However, Leo has other ideas, it seems, as he completely ignores their previous texts.
'Is he there yet?' Leo's message reads.
Donnie rolls his eyes, then looks up to check once again, turning his head back down towards his screen when he sees no change. He types back.
'If he were, I wouldn't be talking to you anymore'
A random yokai passes next to him, making him take a step back absentmindedly. The Hidden City is very crowded today. He hopes he won't have to turn on noise canceling on his headphones. Donnie's not the best at reading lips and he's pretty sure his companion can't sign.
'Excuse you?' comes Leo's text.
'You heard me' Donnie replies, his thumbs pressing the screen as he takes another little look up towards the crowd of yokai.
'You mean read you' Leo corrects him immediately. Ugh, Donnie can even imagine his twin's dumb shit-eating grin, the one he usually uses when he thinks he said something funny.
'Shut up' Donnie starts sending texts one by one, knowing Leo usually keeps the app open so he'll see them immediately as they come.
'+ ratio'
'+ you fell off'
'+ no bitches'
There's not even a moment's hesitation from Leo as he replies with a simple message.
'I never needed bitches'
Donnie's just about to type back something about Leo already being one, when he hears a familiar voice call out to him.
"Donnie!"
He looks up and the next second, his arms are around a familiar body, the texture of the clothes only a little off-putting. He quickly brings one of his hands up to touch the soft white fur instead, while he loosens the other one so he can't feel the textile as much, instead grabbing his phone a little stronger.
He's not a huge fan of hugs and physical display of affection, and nothing will ever change that, he assumes. He's a bit glad when the yokai gives him a last little squeeze and steps back.
"I'm so sorry for being late!" comes the next shout from his companion. Donnie only just now notices how out of breath he sounds. "Hana became sick this morning and I went to get her some medicine, but the Shogun stopped me because of course there has to be another stupid spirit problem in Neo Edo when my sister has a fever and I'm having a date and-"
Donnie lets a fond little smile make its way onto his face as he looks at his boyfriend. "Usagi, it's fine. Leo kept me company," he says, shaking his phone a little bit. "Is Hana feeling better now?"
Usagi nods eagerly. "Her fever went down not long ago and Aunty texted me that she's taking a nap now."
Donnie lets out a hum, more so because it feels nice to his own ears than any other purpose. "I'm glad, then. Tell her I wish her a quick recovery."
Usagi looks at him with that expression Donnie can't quite explain, but loves dearly nonetheless, the one where he just smiles and stares at him like he did something special while Donnie is simply existing.
"Will do," Usagi agrees, then shakes his head like he is just waking himself up and speaks up again. "Alright, so, what's the plan? You said we should eat something the next time we meet. And, well, it's next time," he says awkwardly.
Donnie nods. "I was thinking about going to that new amusement park they built a while ago. I heard there's a really good waffle place there. But–" he looks over at the crowd.
"Yeah, I'm not feeling too good about noise right now either," Usagi says, pointing to his ears that are currently tied in a makeshift bun. Right. He usually does that when his enhanced hearing gets annoying. Sometimes he wears it as a fashion statement though, so Donnie can never really tell from that alone.
"Run of the Mill should be pretty chill around this time," Donnie says, glancing at his phone and checking the time just to make sure, even though he already knows it. "Rush hour is over."
"So," Usagi starts, fidgeting absently with the yoyo on his belt. "Pizza then some boba? How does that sound?"
Donnie immediately feels better at the suggestion of having boba, but he can't leave the opportunity to be a little mean to his dear boyfriend. "Your treat. Since you were late."
Usagi only laughs and smiles at him as he takes his hand to interlock one of each of their fingers. "Deal."

An hour or so later, with a beautiful, amazing, magnificent brown sugar milk tea in his hands, Donnie finally doesnt feel like he will gain a headache, unlike how he felt in the last few days. It also helps that the drink was basically free for him.
He glances at Usagi's sugary strawberry-pineapple boba with clear distaste in his eyes. When the rabbit notices, he lets out an amused huff of air and brings the cup closer to Donnie's face, immediately making him back up on the bench they are sitting on.
"Want some?" Usagi asks, chuckling at Donnie's overplayed grimace.
"Take that abomination away from my mouth," Donnie deadpans.
Usagi shrugs with only one of his shoulders and takes a sip, pretending that he can't hear Donnie's fake-gagging sounds with a smile. "I still can't understand what your deal is."
"First of all," Donnie starts at the prompting, explaining his reasoning for the hundredth time with the same enthusiasm he always does it with. "Green tea is shit. Second of all. Pineapple is the worst fruit ever. And third of all. You ruined the strawberry with that."
Usagi laughs fondly at his rant and takes none of it personally, knowing that Donnie has very clear and strict preferences and not minding it one bit. Nothing could bother him after the two hour long discussion of which kind of chocolate is the best one.
("Obviously, it's dark at the top, then milk and white. White chocolate is not chocolate. Fight me. Come on. Tell me it is. I will bite you Usagi, don't test me.")
"We have to agree to disagree on most of these," Usagi says, then glances down at his drink. "It did kinda ruin the strawberry."
"See? Should've listened to me," Donnie says, feeling like he won some kind of battle. He takes a victory sip of his own perfect drink and taps his feet on the flood in small movements.
Usagi says something under his breath that Donnie doesn't quite catch, so the turtle turns towards him and tilts his head to the side. "What did you say?"
Then Donnie's feeling Usagi's lips on his own in a soft kiss. He closes his eyes immediately and leans a little closer himself. When the rabbit stops the kiss and sits back, Donnie looks away a bit nervously, looking through their surroundings to check if anyone was at the park at this hour. He's relieved to find no yokai around.
"I said I love you," Usagi repeats, the words immediately making Donnie's face heat up as he grabs his drink a little stronger.
He is still not used to Usagi telling him that so casually. Telling someone he loves them was pretty much a family only thing for Donnie, and the fact that the rabbit could just throw it around so easily but truthfully always made him feel strange. In a good way, but strange nonetheless.
He loves it. Just like he loves Usagi. He hopes that one day he could tell him that with words and not just actions like he prefers to.
He licks his lips, trying to gather his thoughts to say something, quickly regretting it. "Bleh. Pineapple."
