Work Text:
It’s twelve in the morning, and the comfiest time to sleep for everyone else. Passed out on the top bunk of their room is ‘Samu, snoring up a storm like their father is in the other room.
Atsumu, however, is awake and thriving off of sleepiness like his life depends on it.
They’ll be getting up at 5am again soon for practice and school like they always do, and Atsumu’s already anticipating the comments from Gin and Aran along the lines of “Stay up late? You look like a zombie!”
Then there’ll be that quick lecture from Kita about the importance of proper sleep that would only turn into a longer lecture if ‘Tsumu showed any signs of wanting to escape from it or tune it out.
Right now it’s just him, his phone, the unfinished homework laid out on the living room table before him, and Suna.
He’s on the other end of the call that started between them when the latter called to joke around about skipping practice the next day since their classes were already swamped with prep for the upcoming school festival. Then came a groan, then silence because who’s Suna to indulge Atsumu Miya in the attention he oh so obviously craved? When one finally caved in (it was ‘Tsumu), it was made known that the blonde was stumped because of the seemingly endless assignments he still hadn’t completed.
Suna picks on him for how much he’s left undone, but then it was revealed that he’s also in the exact same position ---sitting in front of homework he has barely any idea on how to do.
They both grasp some semblance of knowledge on where to start, how to continue, and how good it’d feel to be done with it, but it’s late .
Suna’s pen hadn’t moved an inch from how it was last set down on his desk after 10 minutes, as seen by Atsumu through the now-video-call-call. On the other end, Atsumu’s been hunched over one notebook while only two-thirds done with one assignment out of five that he’s hardly started.
Suna’ll complain for the nth time like: “Why can’t I just submit this all late?” And Atsumu will always respond with an exasperated sigh and a: “Yer’ gonna get kicked off tha’ team if yer’ grades drop…” ---which he says to Suna as much as to himself.
In three hours, they’ll both fall asleep while still on the call. But before that, the topic of conversation would drift from questions about the homework to something along the lines of: “Hey… would ya’ still hang out with me ‘n ‘Samu if I were off the team..?”
If Suna grins before saying, “Probably just with ‘Samu,” then only Atsumu would be awake to tell he’s kidding.
They’ll go on about how “rude” Suna is when Atsumu’s being vulnerable, but Suna will still smile and give genuine encouragement whenever the other seemed stumped at a question. Atsumu will freely give his finished (and surely correct) answers to the other if asked about it, because he knows Suna would only ask if he really wasn’t sure.
Then they’ll almost make it to the finish line with their notebooks scattered across their respective tables, and correction pens running out of white ink somewhere wedged between the books they’d just used. They’ll fall asleep, run out of battery, but they won’t run out of time to finish the last few items before the morning bell rings.
They’ll do it together.
