2019, I.
The first time Hyunjin complained about not receiving a New Year's kiss was when they were cross-legged on the floor, decorating their christmas tree and stuffed with pretty sweaters. Christmas was one of Hyunjin's favorite holidays, so Jeongin finds it cute how he gets excited whenever he gets to prettify their house.
It was kind of an awkward memory, though.
“I don't even know what to wear this year.” Jeongin shakes his head as he hears Hyunjin's whiny voice echoing by his side, focused on fixing the ornaments in the tree. Minho walks on at the same time, carrying a magazine while wandering around the living room.
Minho runs his free hand over his bleached hair, eyes puffy and cheeks reddish like he just woke up. He accommodates in his beige coat before nearly throwing himself on the sofa, glancing at the youngests. “You have a couple weeks to choose.”
Hyunjin scoffed. “Choose who I am kissing on New Year's day.”
Minho let a soft laugh out, comfortably spreading himself as he opened the magazine. “Who are you kissing?”
“My Innie.” Jeongin could feel his heart stopping at the same time when cold fingers ran over the curves of his hips, arms firmly holding him. Hyunjin's minty breath tickling his cheeks, his eyes widening as he turned his head the best as he could, silently asking Minho for help whilst Hyunjin just got closer and– closerclosercloser. “You don't want to kiss your hyung? I'm hurt.”
It's not that Jeongin didn't like him, but he could easily identify the playful tone in Hyunjin's words and that made his heart bump through his chest with embarrassment. He just hated how flirty his friend was and how he made his stupid heart jump with a stupid joke. Jeongin knew he didn't mean it.
Jeongin rolled his eyes, hands trying to push Hyunjin away from him while he managed to slip a tittering giggle off his throat. His friend backed out with a laugh, eyes nearly closing as a grin took over his lips. “Get off me!”
“Why does nobody want to kiss me?” He shouted dramatically, earning a smile from Minho and a sigh from Jeongin, who resumed his work with his decorations afterwards.
They didn't talk about it the rest of the entire month.
2020, II.
It was early December the next time it happened. Hyunjin was in front of the window, grabbing a mug filled with hot chocolate and watching the cars slowly pass in the road, eyes sparkling and strands of blond hair caressing his face. He was waiting patiently for the snow to come – and waiting for someone to watch it with him.
Jeongin just happened to be that someone.
Jeongin scratched his neck when he entered the living room, skin flushing as Hyunjin turned around and examined him, his friend's shy smile appearing slowly as they glared at each other non-stop. “I was searching for my charger but– oh, it's snowing.”
Hyunjin almost dropped his drink on the floor when he stared at the window again. Plenty of snow falling on the grass of his garden and painting everything – including his flowers – a shimmering white. He invited Jeongin to get closer with a single gesture, taking a sip of his hot chocolate as Jeongin happily did it, joining the seat by his side.
“My mom has a pretty cute belief about the first snowfall.” Hyunjin says after a while, Jeongin hummed in response so his friend could keep talking freely. “If you witness the first snowfall with someone you like, true love will blossom between both and it will be long-lasting.”
“That's adorable.”
Hyunjin smiles, hands anxiously playing with the warm mug. “Yes, it is. That also means you need to kiss me on New Year's Day.”
“I thought you already got the message last year.” Jeongin jokingly rolls his eyes, placing his fingers on Hyunjin's chest to push him as he tries to get closer, his lips forming into a pout. Jeongin thinks that his friend should stop with these jokes, because his heart it's about to jump out of his mouth. The long-lasting, true love talk it's trying to get him dead.
“Nobody wants to kiss me, got it.”
He didn't talk about it for the entire month, again.
2021, III.
The next time it happens in Jeongin's room, after Hyunjin knocks on his door to ask if they could sleep together that night. Jeongin wasn't a big fan of physical touch, but he had an exception whenever Hyunjin asked for cuddles, always agreeing. December nights were intensely cold, so Jeongin was gratefully waiting for any kind of warmth.
Hyunjin adjusts himself on the blankets, turning around and facing Jeongin, who stares back at him with puffy eyes. Hyunjin could feel him still trembling under the fabric, the older one blinked before asking, “Wanna cuddle?”
Jeongin nodded slowly, lips parting while his arms embraced his friend's hips, head resting on his neck. Hyunjin grinned, his arm reaching behind his neck and fingers pressing lightly on his back. “Will you give me a New Year's Kiss, too?”
“Oh, no.” Jeongin's hoarse voice caresses his ear, feeling him giggling against his skin right after. “It's not even New Year.”
“It's New Year everyday.”
Hyunjin pouts, trying to reach now Jeongin's cheeks. Jeongin just snuggles in his place, tightening his hold in Hyunjin's hips as his eyes flutter. “Shut up, Hyunjin, go to sleep. You're taking my sleep away.”
Jeongin dreams of a long-haired boy and sweet kisses being exchanged that night, but he never tells him.
2022, +1.
It's New Year's eve and Minho reunited everyone in their house, playing loud music, dancing and eating 'till death stops them. While that happens, Jeongin is on the balcony, sitting on a random bench while exhaling in the fresh air, watching the bright city lights from afar.
He didn't find Hyunjin anywhere for the last two hours, he wondered what he was doing. Everyone was partying but– Jeongin just felt so empty without the presence of his best friend that he could die, even though Hyunjin pissed him off so much, Jeongin loved him, loved him, lovedlovedlovedloved.
“...Looking for you everywhere!”
Huh?
Jeongin turned his head around to see Hyunjin, blinking rapidly as he sat beside him, pressing his phone tightly while sparkling eyes looked back at his soul. “How much time is left for us to get to the next year?”
Hyunjin smiled – and he looked pretty under the lights, his hair moving magnificently over the breeze. Jeongin sighed deeply, fingers circling anxiously on his own thighs. “2 minutes.”
“Were you serious about the kisses?”
Hyunjin's smile faded a little, his eyes avoided Jeongin for brief seconds as he played with his own fingers. “Would you be mad at me if I said yes?”
“No.” Jeongin's soft voice quietly echoed while a surprised look took over Hyunjin's features. “I wanted you to kiss me, too. I think you should get your New Year's Kiss.”
Jeongin grinned, hands leaving his own thighs to press his friend's chin, finally forcing him to look at his eyes and rushing to connect their lips when fireworks blasted up in the sky, eyes fluttering when he tasted Hyunjin's lip gloss. Jeongin could get a flicker of Hyunjin's surprised face before he did it, smiling slightly as he began to deepen the kiss, sliding his tongue over his friend's – should he call him that? – bottom lip.
Jeongin separated their lips quickly so he could embrace Hyunjin's hips and steal him a peck, tasting strawberry on his tongue. “You're really sweet.”
