Work Text:
The snow had started falling heavily as Geno glanced outside the kitchen window. The setting sun catching the flakes and sparkling. He was thankful for the warmth of the house, his ever aching bones savoring the heat from the fire.
He looked back down at the dishes he was washing, focusing on the task. Dinner had been a simple affair, a quick casserole and some vegetables. Of course, the vegetables were tossed across the kitchen by Goth, who was just beginning to start on solid foods. He seemed to favor the mushiest of foods over things that took effort eating. He couldn’t help the smile that formed from watching Reaper pick the offending vegetables from his cloak.
Geno heard the whisper of footsteps that told him Reaper was approaching. His suspicions were confirmed when he felt the gentle weight of his hand settle around his midsection.
“Aren’t you finished yet? We got impatient” Reaper’s sentence was punctuated by two tiny fits gripping at his shirt and a little babble of affirmation from Goth.
“Almost. Just a few more dishes to clean”
Reaper groaned as he leaned his head on Geno’s shoulder, “Can’t it wait? I’ve got a surprise for you”
“A surprise huh? It’s not even Gyftmas yet.” Geno remarked, scrubbing at a particularly stubborn piece of grim on a plate.
Reaper raised up and resituated Goth on his hip, who babbled offendedly.
“One little gift or two won’t spoil the occasion, I promise” Reaper started to tug at the back of Geno’s sweater lightly. “Pretty please?”
Geno paused his cleaning and turned to see Reaper doing his best puppy dog eyes, which paired with the baby on his hip just intensified the effect.
“Fine, Fine. I’ll take a break, just stop with the sad eyes” Geno huffed out a laugh as he let Reaper take his hand and lead him into the living room.
They had gone all out this year for Goth’s 1st Gyftmas. The room twinkled with the soft lights from the tree and the fireplace in the middle of the room. Stockings hung for each one of them on the hearth and presents were gathered at the base of the tree like little houses in brightly colored paper and bows. Goth had a plethora of gifts from not just them but also their friends and acquaintances as well seeking to dote on the baby.
The wooden floor beneath them cracked as Reaper deposited Geno onto the couch and handed him Goth, who was happy to see his other parent. Geno smiled at his baby and nuzzled his face, which let out a shriek of laughter from the infant.
“Now stay right there while I go get the surprises” Reaper said with a flourish of his hands as he went over to the tree. Geno noticed him reach all the way behind the mountain of boxes and pluck something swiftly from underneath and hide them behind his back.
Reaper then came back over and sat on their well worn couch with his hands still hidden.
“I think our little crow should get his gift first, don’t you think?” Goth squealed at the mention of his nickname. Geno smiled and put Goth on his knee so that the child could get more room to open his present.
Reaper pulled one gift from behind his back, a small sized box in shiny green paper with a red bow on it. He placed the present in Goth’s tiny hands, who paused for a moment, unsure of what to do with this new object placed in his lap.
Goth patted the box for a moment and pinched at the bow with a giggle of delight. Geno laughed “Your supposed to tear it open, silly. Like this” Geno ripped up a corner of the paper to get it started for him. Goth seemed to take the hint and tugged at the jagged edge of the paper, ripping it more. This seemed to delight the infant as he grabbed the wrapping with both hands and went at it.
Eventually all the paper was more or less off the box much to Goth’s disappointment.
“The paper is not the only fun part kiddo.” Geno said, as he reached around his son to open the box. Inside was a blue plush bear with a white crinkle stomach. He held the bear in front of Goth, who looked at it with stars in his eyes. The infant grabbed the stuffed and animal and squeezed at it’s head with his little hands with a burble of happiness.
“I think it’s got his seal of approval” Geno said, while Reaper nodded.
“Now, it’s your turn.” Reaper said smugly, pulling out the last gift decorated in silver and red ribbon.
Geno felt himself fluster as Reaper placed it in his hands “You didn’t have to get me anything.” He said nervously, Geno was never good at getting gifts or anything of the like. It was a wild concept even to this day that anyone would care enough about him to get him things, even to this day.
“I wanted to get you something though.” Reaper said with a smile.
Geno carefully peeled back the paper and ribbons until he came to a little box. Inside he found a small oval locket, when he opened it there was a picture of him, Reaper, and Goth smiling back at him. Geno stilled for a moment, staring at the locket.
Reaper put his hand on Geno’s knee, “It’s just a little something I had mind for awhile. I hope that you like it?” He sounded uncertain at the last part of his sentence as Geno still hadn’t moved.
After a moment the skeleton spoke quietly “I love it, Reaper. Thank you.” Geno let a soft smile roll across his face as he took in this moment. The snow falling quietly outside and his family, safe and warm. It was the most peace he had felt in a long long time.
Geno reached over and hugged Reaper, not letting him see the tears that started to form in his sockets. “I love you both so much” He said, feeling Goth wriggle between them.
“We love you too” Reaper said, returning the hug.
They spent the rest of that evening curled up on the couch together, drinking hot cocoa and at peace with the love they found in each other.
