“...armed robbery near E Kiramman Ln—sheesh you have a street named after you? Damn you rich rich, huh?”

Vi sat too comfortably on the edge of the Sheriff’s desk… wearing a skimpy bunny costume.

Caitlyn kept her eyes on the reports in front of her.

The bruiser’s thick muscles flexed and stretched her bright pink tights to the fullest. And Vi could’ve sworn the Sheriff peeked more than once. “Damn there was also a bomb threat.” Vi’s head snapped up. “No mention of Jinx. I have her under control, trust me.”

None of the words made sense to the Sheriff.

“I called it in, but I can head out. Get better deets, and all that? You coming?” the woman shoved a cupcake in her mouth, and got up.

Her ass looked… great. Vi’s arms were then bulging out of her skimpy top, the corset around her waist accentuated her breasts quite nicely, and the Sheriff kept her focus on the incident report. Vi smiled to herself.

“Are you…” Sheriff Caitlyn rubbed her temples. Her headache had a headache. “Deputy Lane—, why are you dressed like that?”

The bruiser looked down at her outfit and shrugged. “Undercover work in Zaun. You called me in before I could change. Why?”

Undercover.

Right.

Vi’s netting down her arms didn’t hide her Stillwater ink she earned from her time there. Definitely gave this sexy bunny a rugged appearance.

“You’re not… under much cover.” Caitlyn whispered to herself before standing. “I need you to change before we head to the bridge.”

Vi nodded while tossing the folder back onto Caitlyn’s desk. “Sure. I mean I would, but I don’t have a locker yet so I haven’t been keeping spare clothes here.”

Caitlyn slowly blinked. “You came to work like that with no means of changing?”

“You haven’t assigned me one since—well, Sheriff Cupcake, we either waste time letting me run home or I go as a jacked bunny.” Vi punched her hand and leaned down to grab her gauntlets she keeps in Caitlyn’s office.

They hummed to life as Vi slipped them on.

Caitlyn immediately tossed a set of keys at Vi, who caught them between her large fingers. “That was an order, Deputy. Not a suggestion. I have a spare uniform in my locker from my Deputy days. You have five minutes, Violet.”

Vi saluted before jogging away in her heels. “Aye, aye, Sheriff!”

The boots fit perfectly on Vi as she jogged ahead of her team to start pulling bodies out of the wreckage. As she bent down the belt felt a little snug.

“How the hell did Cupcake have a nonexistent waistline?” She grunted, but never moved to change or shift her uniform.

Honoring the dress code and law enforcers for the prettiest Sheriff in the city. Vi rescued about half a dozen people, still alive but were wounded greatly, some in critical condition.

Caitlyn jogged to Vi towards the base of the wreckage. “There was an elderly woman in there. Do you see anyone?”

Vi was crouched, catching her breath. “If she’s in there, Sheriff—it’s not good news. We gotta wait for Jayce to get here and move most of the walls that—”

“Vi,” Caitlyn’s voice sounded worried and too desperate for a Sheriff at the moment. Vi would never say anything about it, though. “She used to be your neighbor before you moved out. This could’ve been your home.”

The elderly woman across the hall who had too many cats. But she would give them away one by one. Whenever Caitlyn would visit for— study sessions , when they were in university Caitlyn would always coo at the cats roaming the halls. And even came to Vi’s one night carrying a kitten in her coat.

‘If someone will find him a home, it’ll be her.’

Vi tried not to flinch at the horrible, goblin-like appearance at whatever creature Caitlyn thought was a kitten. ‘I’m sure that person will be lucky.’

In the end, when Vi and Caitlyn decided to become roommates—professional, of course—Vi noticed the ugly fluff ball was the last and final kitten left. Vi tried to smile at the ugly thing but he arched his back and hissed. ‘Get fucked then, asshole. I’m outta here, at least.’

Caitlyn had the perimeter shut off while Vi began delicately walking through the rubble. Gauntlets raised and overly mindful where she stepped. “The things I do for cupcake.”

There were no bodies, at least, but as Vi was about to turn around and head out she heard something. A yip or the sound of a strangled mouse somewhere. But Vi’s been around plenty of cats to know what one sounded like. It was hard to see through the smog and debris, but Vi kept forward. Listening to the quiet and soft mewling of the woman’s pet. She grunted, using her gauntlets to lift the heavier rock.

“I hear ya, little buddy!” and she eventually saw him. A shivering and soot covered kitten. Without thinking Vi reached down to pick him up. But he hissed and scratched at her gauntlets.

She sighed. “Okay, asshole. It’s me or let this building fall on top of you.” Vi reached down again, “You’re on your last life, buddy. C’mere.”

When he tried to run away Vi jerked forward and caught him. He was pissed, angry and probably scared to death. “Let’s get you outta here. I think your mom used her last life making sure you were safe. Let’s not waste that.”

Caitlyn appeared equally relieved and worried when Vi walked out of the smog carrying a shivering kitten in her gauntlet. “Where’s Ms—”

Vi gently pushed the kitten into the Sheriff’s hands. “I’m sorry, cupcake.”

Caitlyn inhaled sharply. “Well, deputy, your work here is finished. I’ll see to it that you’re properly recognized for your bravery today.”

Vi waved it off, “This morning was worse, being in heels all day. Doing this was my reward. Getting people to safety. I’m sorry I couldn’t get everyone, Sheriff.”

“Don’t do that to yourself, Violet.” Caitlyn looked down at the kitten in her arms, ruining her uniform. “Once we find him a home we’ll have saved everyone.”

Vi was typing furiously at her keyboard, writing up the report for Sheriff Kiramman before they went home for the night. It was usually always them to arrive first and the last ones to leave.

“Perfect.” The deputy grabbed the USB and walked the short distance towards the small hallway that had the commissioner, captain, and finally… Vi knocked before slowly opening the Sheriff’s door. “I’m finished. You ready to go, cupcake?”

Caitlyn nodded, but made no move to get up. “Oh! It’s… that time already?” She almost looked… guilty.

Interesting , Vi thought as she stepped inside and placed the USB on Caitlyn’s desk. “Here. Witness reports, investigative logs, the pictures before and after the explosion, and—are you okay, Cait?”

Caitlyn was biting her lips tightly, looking almost… pained. “Perfectly fine, Vi.”

Vi placed both hands on the desk and leaned forward. “Were you… using a certain Hex Vibe before I interrupted you?”

“No!” Caitlyn all but screamed, looking more relieved but not so calm. “You know that kitten you saved the other day?”

Vi sighed and rolled her eyes. “The goblin. How could I forget?”

“Well, I—I know I told you I took him to a shelter, but he was so shaken up I’ve been visiting him almost everyday since. And I may have accidentally… adopted… him.”

“You accidentally adopted a whole ass demon?”

“Stop that.” Caitlyn glared like an angry mother, she reached into her desk drawer and pulled out a freshly bathed and milk-drunk kitten. His belly was full and he was glaring at the world. “I was feeding him just before you walked in.”

Vi wiped her nose and shrugged. “I guess you’re taking him home then?”

Caitlyn brightened up at that. “I can? Oh, Violet, thank you!”

The deputy shrugged. “I mean, it’s your apartment—”

Our apartment.” the sheriff corrected.

“You probably shouldn’t leave it in the drawer overnight, anyway.”

Caitlyn smiled as she stood up with the beast in her hands. “I’ve been leaving him in the Commissioner’s office, actually. He’ll be happy to know I’ve taken him home.”

Home. Vi glared at the goblin who matched her contempt. “Well, then I should be able to get a dog.”

It wasn’t easy adjusting to the addition in her apartment.

For starters, Vi had to buy rollers for her uniform as there was fur everywhere! Breakfast time with her very good friend was cut short since Caitlyn needed to continue bottle feeding the goblin.

Vi wished she at least had a dog to balance the sheer amount of sass in the apartment. “You gotta name him, cupcake. Calling it weird ass pet names you usually save for me when I’m good ain’t gonna cut it.”

“What do you think we should name him?”

“Goblin.”

“Vi,” Caitlyn scolded. “He’s a cute little bebe, what about Bear?” The fluff ball was standing on their table… eating out of their bowls.

“Cherry?”

“I don’t know, perhaps.”

“I honestly don’t care.” The bruiser shrugged and shoved a mouth full of pancakes into her mouth. “Mhm.” she glared at the kitten, who slowly turned and glared back.

Vi never tried to like the cat.

Why would she? She’s clearly a dog person. Goes for Saturday morning jogs with Caitlyn, gets a snack on their way home, and even tries to sneak a kiss with her Sheriff. Who giggles and softly pushes Vi away.

“We’ve tried that, Violet.”

They did.

But all of that was interrupted by this damned cat. Officially named Beximus but was quietly called Goblin by the deputy. Vi would come home from visiting Zaun late at night and Goblin would be sitting on the counter, waiting for her… to strike?

Vi placed her gauntlets by the front door and quietly made her way down the opposite hall to her bedroom. She briefly looked towards Caitlyn’s room and thought about it again. One goodnight kiss wouldn’t hurt. Goblin seemed to sense her thoughts, tail lazily waving around before he leaped off the counter and meows loudly. He walked towards Caitlyn’s hallway and paused.

Vi thought this was another staring contest and waved him off. “Whatever, goblin. Have her if you want. I’m patient. I’ll wait as long it takes.” Vi headed down her own hallway and was attacked by the fucking goblin.

He mewled angrily and snapped at her ankle coming from nowhere.

“Ow! You mother fucker!” She picked him up the scuff of his fur. Holding him eye-level. “If you ever try that shit again with me, you’ll end up on the trencher side of Zaun! And I swear to god, Caitlyn will have to—”

“What happened? What’s going on over here?” Caitlyn turned on the lights, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. “Are you arguing with my cat, Vi?”

Vi held out Goblin. “This bitch attacked me! I feel safer in the trenches of Zaun than with this asshole.”

“Oh honey.” Caitlyn cooed and reached for Vi.

Vi instantly relaxed. “I know, babe. He came out of nowhere—”

“You have to be more careful.” Caitlyn took Goblin from Vi. “He’s just a kitten.”

Vi’s mouth hung open as she watched Caitlyn return to her room whispering sweet nothings to the cat, “He’s just a—” she watched as the Sheriff disappeared into her own room. “He’s just a cat.”

The goblin was meowing and possibly scratching at the door.

“He’s your problem now, Sheriff.”

Vi doesn’t have time for a pet.

unless it was a dog.

When the deputy and the sheriff drunkenly returned from a company party, they were in a heated embrace. Vi took her shot and scored within the first few minutes with her signature cocky grin and brow wiggle. Come on, with the outfit the sheriff was wearing. Thin strap gown that hugged every muscle and showed the best assets on her friend.

You’re a fucking treat, cupcake. Do you even know that?

But apparently, Caitlyn did in fact “know that”. Completely aware of Vi’s intense staring—that she was actually terrible at hiding. But several drinks later Vi followed Caitlyn to the bathroom, completely chivalrous, offering an arm to hold onto while she freshened up. And Vi leaned down to kiss Caitlyn’s shoulder. It seemed innocent enough. Totally harmless. What roommates and best friends do all the time.

They’ve been there before, so it wasn’t strange territory.

But Caitlyn immediately turned around and grabbed the front of Vi’s shirt, yanking her forward and pulling her into a kiss. Vi’s entire body relaxed into it.

Finally, she thought. As she waited for the Sheriff to either pull away or keep them connected.

Caitlyn quickly deepened the kiss. Biting Vi’s lower lip, sucking on the bruiser’s tongue, and pressing against her deputy as though possessed–craving a connection.

Things got a little too heated in the bathroom. Hands were desperately wandering over clothed breasts—shoulders, everything. Kissing each other deeply, trying to gather and taste a feeling they’ve both craved for years. Vi roughly pressed Caitlyn against the bathroom counter before lifting her on top of it, moaning as she gathered silky material in her fists. Pulling it higher and higher.

Caitlyn’s arms securely around the bruiser, clinging to her for leverage. “Wait.”

Vi grunted when she felt the material of Caitlyn’s underwear and pushed it aside. “You ready for me, baby?” she licked down a quivering jawline. Sharp and flushed in their drunken haze.

Vi heard something snap and Caitlyn yelped in shock, quickly sliding off the sink, grabbing Vi’s jaw. “Take me home.” Caitlyn gasped into a panting mouth.

Vi didn’t want to stop. Not even to take this gorgeous woman home, in her bed where they could—the deputy pulled away and nearly dragged Caitlyn out of the bathroom.

Hm !” Vi grunted as her back was slammed against the front door. “Damn, cupcake. You lift?”

Caitlyn was too busy kissing down Vi’s neck. Humming through her drunk haze. “You feel so good against me!” was more than evident by the way her hands greedily touched and grabbed at Vi.

Her strong shoulders, pressing her thumbs over Vi’s nipples through her shirt, and forcing her legs apart with her knee.

“Uh huh,” Vi hissed when Caitlyn bit down hard. “Trying to mark me or something?”

“Perhaps I am.”

“Better here than in the bathroom. We almost broke that sink.”

“We left because we did .” Caitlyn mumbled against Vi’s mouth then kissed her, which quickly became messy. Sloppy. Wet and without rhythm.

Wait, really?

Damn. Vi’s attention was clearly only on Caitlyn.

They ended up in Vi’s room, clothes were nearly torn in their rush. And as Vi knelt between Caitlyn’s legs trailing wet kisses down the sheriff’s inner thigh. Her eyes on the goal that glistened under the moonlight. Vi sucked the skin harder, encouraged by Caitlyn’s breathy moans. But she stopped when she saw movement out of the corner of her eye. Goblin was sitting on her dresser watching them. Vi swallowed while holding his gaze.

Caitlyn reached down, combing her hand through Vi’s hair and taking a fistful for direction. “Keep going.”

Vi hesitated. “Your cat’s here.”

Caitlyn was sitting up to remove her bra. “Ignore him. It’s just a cat.”

Oh, so now he’s just a cat?

Before Vi had been told more than once a day, whenever Goblin tried to start a fight with her, that he was a person. A part of the family. Vi tried to ignore him, but the stare he was giving her made her skin crawl. She jumped up but he hissed and ran out of the room on his own. The deputy slammed her door closed. Caitlyn was staring at her oddly.

“You have a strange relationship with my cat.”

Vi shook her head and jumped onto the bed, wasted no time and buried her face in Caitlyn’s pussy. The Sheriff moaned loudly and forgot what they were talking about. It’s been too long since Vi had a taste and oh my god , still sweet like a cupcake. She licked and sucked with the eagerness of a teen during their first time. Loving the way Caitlyn’s pubes tickled her nose just the way it used to.

“God, I missed this.” Vi angled herself and stuck two fingers inside, knowing Caitlyn was more than prepared.

“Vi, shit— yes , right there! Right there!” were the only encouraging words she needed to hear to lick and suck harder.

Who’s cat?

What cat?

What’s a cat?

Three’s a crowd, anyway.

Even over the months as Caitlyn and Vi settled into a semblance of domesticity, Goblin was there watching Vi with an expression like he knew when the world was going to end. And that he would be the cause of mankind's demise. She did try to get—on his good side at least. Holding this fish-rod gismo thingy that had a feathered worm at the end. Whenever Caitlyn used it Goblin went batshit crazy for it.

Perhaps even smiling.

But with Vi?

He stood on his tower, cleaning his front paw while holding eye-contact. Never blinking.

Vi gave up quickly. “I don’t fucking get you. I pulled you out of the building. Ungrateful lil cunt.”

But this goblin was an asshole to her.

On days when Caitlyn was sitting at the table going over photos and potential evidence for the current assignment, Vi would take over and clean the apartment, make dinner and spoil the Sheriff.

She placed a full plate of food in front of Caitlyn and kissed the top of her hair. “Same blood stains as before, sheriff. Eat something okay?”

Caitlyn only hummed in reply. Making odd hand gestures as though she were wielding a knife, a gun, a bat—putting herself in the crime scene. Vi chuckled to herself and reached over the counter to turn on the sink to start cleaning up, but the goblin was laying inside, cleaning himself. Unbothered by how much he was bothering Vi.

“Hey,” she nudged him with a wooden spoon. “Get up. I gotta wash the dishes.”

He never moved.

Ignoring the deputy completely.

Vi scratched her head and poked him one more time. “Cait, come get your cat.” She sighed and looked up. Her roommate still neck deep in the witness reports.

Damn.

Vi smiled, getting a devious idea. She reached for the faucet knob and slowly turned it on. It started as a drip, catching Goblin’s attention right away. He licked at it. Then Vi turned it on full blast and laughed when the goblin let out a demonic screech.

“Violet!” the sheriff scolded.

Vi preferred the slow days whenever her and Caitlyn had the same days off and they would decide on watching a film. Staying in all day. Relax, since Vi was usually always on call for surveillance. And now she felt like a princess being held in Caitlyn’s arms as they cuddled on the couch watching Hell Boy.

Goblin was sitting on the snack table staring into Vi’s soul. Unblinking or unmoving.

“You’re in his spot.” Caitlyn joked while she held onto the deputy a little tighter. “When you would be out doing undercover work, me and him would cuddle like this. Waiting for you.”

Vi groaned into a face full of breasts. “I doubt that asshole was waiting for me.”

Goblin continued to stare, unmoving. Vi could’ve sworn he never blinked in the one and a half hours they watched the movie. But she was quickly distracted when Caitlyn turned on Spotify and put on some Taylor Swift while they made out. Grinding like eager teenagers.

“Caitlyn,” Vi moaned as she pressed her hips forward, searching. “You’re so beautiful.”

When Vi’s phone began ringing they both groaned, but technically Vi was still on emergency call. “It’s probably the Commissioner.”

“Ignore him.” Caitlyn was panting, holding onto Vi. Not even tempted to let her go. “I’m your Sheriff. That’s an order.”

Vi laughed. “Yes, ma’am.” she mumbled into Caitlyn’s mouth, shoving her tongue inside, moaning when the sheriff sucked on it.

But the phone kept ringing and they reluctantly separated. When Vi reached for her phone Goblin scratched her hand. “Ow! Did you see that, cupcake? This bitch just hates me!”

Caitlyn was scratching her head in confusion. “I don’t know. Perhaps you spooked him. He’s so gentle with me.”

“I do no such thing. I’m gonna get dressed and—oh, where’s your phone, Caitlyn? He’s been calling you too.”

Caitlyn looked surprised and reached for her phone, but came up empty. “Oh? Has he? I believe it’s in my room. I suppose it's a full team then?”

Vi read the text and nodded. “Grab your rifle. Chembarons hold has been found. We’re moving in on them tonight.”

Vi grunted as her gauntlet was caught on the chain. Lost one, now both of them. “Fuck!” She ripped through the strap and watched as it was crushed in the machine. That could’ve been her. “Caitlyn!”

Caitlyn was running along the catwalk above her. Flawlessly sniping the chains off the carrier lines. Even dropping a few bodies who were attacking her team down below. But some caught sight of them and began climbing the rails towards the Sheriff.

“Vi!”

“Yeah, I see them! I’m fresh out of hands at the moment!” Vi lifted her fists prepared to fight for her life—and Caitlyn’s.

She got some lucky shots in but more and more came. She jumped up, grabbed the bar above her and kicked the three men that were running towards her. “They’re coming from the docks, Sheriff!”\

Their entire team was surrounded by Chembarons. These unruly fighters kept Vi on her toes, and overly alert of her surroundings in the dark warehouse.

Caitlyn aimed her sniper towards the doorway and shot a barrel that exploded in fireworks and smoke. She flinched and looked down at the blade sticking out of her stomach before she was pushed over the railing.

“Caitlyn!” Vi barely remembers leaping forward, sliding off the edge and grabbing Caitlyn’s arm before she hit the ground. “Claggor! Somebody! Help me!”

Caitlyn was in critical condition.

Kept in a medically induced coma to keep her blood pressure low. Vi was still in the waiting room with the Sheriff’s dried blood on her hands. Creating an image of poor decision making on her part. She’s the brute. She’s the tank of the duo.

Why did she let Caitlyn go in first?

She would’ve spotted them if she just bulldozed into the building like she normally does.

“Deputy Lane.” a voice called out

And Vi shot to her feet so fast she startled the family next to her. She saw the nurse with the clipboard and rushed to the woman.

Vi probably looked like a wild woman. “Is she awake now? Am I allowed to go in? I'm her legal emergency contact. I mean–that should—I should stay here right? When she wakes up? Will she wake up?” Vi shoved her hands in her pockets to calm her nerves. “Can I see her now?... please.”

The nurse smiled empathetically. “Ms Lane. Deputy, you should go home and rest. Councilor Kiramman and her husband are currently with the Sheriff. We’re making sure she’s getting the best care. I promised you that. And as her… emergency contact, it's best if you’re well rested, Deputy. And we’ll ring you when she wakes up.”

It felt like swallowing cement.

“Right. Yeah, you’re right.” Vi nodded, but made no move to leave.

“Deputy—”

“We had a stake out a couple months ago, I was awake for more than thirty hours and I barely got my shit rocked when we made our move.”

The nurse frowned.

Vi sniffed hard, feeling her eyes burn. “If I wasn’t on my ass so long this time, I would’ve seen him running towards her. She’d be awake. This is—all my fault. I should turn in my badge. She’d be fine if I went in first.”

The nurse hesitated before placing a hand on Vi’s shoulder. “I can’t give medical advice to non-patients. But as a friend of a friend, Sheriff Kiramman would be in high spirits if she knew  you were taking care of yourself when she wakes up.”

Vi slowly nodded and headed out.

A forced medical leave Vi found out she was placed under when she tried to go back to the station the following day.

“Get some rest, kid.” Current acting Sheriff Grayson’s tone was final. “You’re gonna need it.”

Vi stood outside of hers and Caitlyn’s apartment, making no move to go inside.

There was no music blasting whenever Caitlyn was showering. No loud terrible sitcoms blaring while Caitlyn was making a racket in the kitchen attempting to cook them dinner, and there was no Caitlyn here.

But Vi wasn’t the only one left alone.

A soft meow came from the other side of the door, and Vi quickly opened it and stared down at the stupid cat. Goblin walked past Vi’s legs and looked down the hallway for his mother.

“She’s not here. Get inside.” Vi held the door for him, but the cat kept his attention on the elevators down the hall. “Come on, man. I don’t have all night.”

Goblin slowly sat down and waited. And usually if this were a grocery run, the elevator would ding and Caitlyn would step out smiling and cooing at her good boy that greeted her. But this wasn’t one of those times.

Vi pinched the bridge of her nose.

She didn’t have time to deal with this cat right now. She left the front door cracked open and passed out on the couch. Vi woke up in the middle of the night and opened the door. Goblin was in his same position. He didn’t even look her way.

Vi rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. “Listen, buddy. It’s just you and me. Now get your ass inside before Caitlyn gets pissed at the both of us.”

He let out a strange noise Vi never heard before.

Like a distressed cry from a child. But it came from this animal.

“Fuck.” Vi hesitated before leaning down, she reached out to pick up the goblin but stopped when he noticed her proximity. “Bro, work with me here. Get your ass inside, I’ll cook some steak for the both of us. Just two pals chilling, waiting for the Sheriff to return. We can watch movies, shit—I don’t know. Sing, listen to music, whatever. How’s that sound?”

Vi gently brushed him with the back of her hand. So delicate, even she barely felt a thing. When she figured Goblin wasn’t going to attempt another assassination, she moved her hand under his belly and gently scooped him up in her large hand. “Come on, buddy. Let’s get some food for you.”

Vi was eating a bowl of cereal while Goblin stood right next to the front door. Vi moved his kennel and food and water dishes for him. His litter box was still in the laundry room. But he hardly moved from his spot. He wouldn’t even hiss, glare or pay Vi any attention.

It didn’t matter, anyway. Vi had no emotional outlet to deal with Caitlyn’s cat.

Vi once again tried calling the hospital. Caitlyn was still under.

It’s been over a week now.

Vi stopped hiding her tears when she got off the phone with the hospital. Caitlyn regressed, hemorrhaged during the night and was taken into an emergency surgery. “You fucker!” She buried her face in her hands. “That should’ve been me in the hospital room! Fuck!”

She punched the wall, inwardly cringing at the dent she left behind.

At least Goblin was becoming lively again. He would sit outside Vi’s room whenever she woke up. “I’m sorry I’m not Caitlyn, bro.”

He meowed at her when Vi attempted to watch sitcoms.

When Vi tried going back to the office to keep herself busy, Cassandra made her return home. “I’m temporarily looking over your team. They’re in great hands with Sheriff Grayson.”

Vi wasn’t worried about that. “I’m not allowed at the hospital.”

Cassandra looked sympathetic. “Violet, my dear, that wasn’t my decision. Tobias believes Caitlyn needs to rest and heal on her own. When she wakes up,” Mrs Kiramman placed a comforting—motherly—hand on Vi’s cheek. “I’ll give her your absolute best.”

Vi almost cried when she pulled into an unexpected—yet, necessary—hug.

She did cry when she returned to the, once again, empty apartment and Goblin had made a mess outside of his litter box.

He began following Vi even more. Being his old self toying with her last nerve. He would bite her, scratch her and do everything to get Vi into Caitlyn’s room.

“Stop that!”

Vi gave in and she opened the Sheriff’s room and looked around. “There! Is that what you wanted, lil bitch boy?”

Goblin immediately looked around the room, probably searching for Caitlyn. He jumped on his tower before knocking over a framed picture of Caitlyn and Vi on their graduation.

Vi quickly picked it up and finally saw how Caitlyn wasn’t looking at the camera but at Vi. Only Vi.

Goblin ruined the small moment when he meowed loudly and hissed.

Her patients had worn this with this fucking cat. “You!” He was standing on his tower Caitlyn had set up before their mission.  “You’re an asshole ! A little shit. On my last fucking nerve! I don’t know what Cailyn sees in you! You’re a fucking stray with a dirty background we pretty much picked up from maximum security! What do cats even do, huh? You don’t play fetch!”

Vi gave an example by roughly tossing a squeaky toy across the room, Goblin watched as though he were impressed by Vi’s ability to play with toys.

“You don’t offer emotional love or support. You don’t go for walks and Caitlyn loves walks. She takes me on walks all the time—and oh my god I’m arguing with a damn cat!”

Vi dropped onto Caitlyn’s bed with a deep sigh. “You’re a goblin. Useless. I don’t have time for you. When I was trying to make time for Caitlyn. And when we found time—I found her. And she was always here for me. I need her back. I want her back.”

She began crying again, seeing the blurry image of that damned cat hopping from his tower and sitting on the carpet in front of her. He meowed softly that resembled a soft “wow”.

Vi couldn’t help but laugh at the ridiculousness. “Another staring contest huh, fucker?”

Almost as a reply, Goblin watched Vi for a moment then slowly blinked.

Vi scoffed. “Well, you just lost.” She laid down on the Sheriff’s pillows, didn’t bother pulling back the blankets and fell asleep on Caitlyn’s bed.

When she woke up Goblin was curled up beside her snoring like a large man. He never even did that with Caitlyn. Perhaps they were both lonely.

She hesitated before scratching his head softly. “I miss her too.”

Goblin didn’t move as she pet him.

They both ate breakfast together.

Vi minorly felt her spirits lifted. It wasn’t much but it was enough.

Perhaps she had some time for Beximus.

Vi nearly tripped over herself as she tried not to run through the hospital halls. “512, 514, 516! Fuck!” she hesitated before pushing the door open.

Caitlyn looked over and smiled. “Vi.”

Awake and breathing.

Awake and alive!

“Caitlyn.” Vi quickly walked into the room, looking at the medical equipment that kept her Sheriff alive these past few, long weeks. She sat next to Caitlyn and did nothing else. Folding her hands on her lap. Afraid to reach over and show her love… and hurt Caitlyn by accident.

Caitlyn groaned her misery as she reached for her. “You can touch me, Violet. Please.”

And she did. Vi held her hand and even stood to kiss her roommate.

“How’s my cat?” Caitlyn’s weak voice asked once they pulled apart.

Any other time, Vi would’ve been annoyed by the question. But she actually smiled. “He misses you. We miss you.”

Caitlyn looked exhausted. “I miss you both.”

“Then come home and let me take care of you.”

“My father wouldn’t allow that.”

“I know. At least, I’ll have your mother’s approval on my side when I take you home.”

Caitlyn looked surprised to hear that. “Do you now?”

Vi could only smile and lean forward to kiss those lips again.

Vi felt like a princess being held by Caitlyn as they cuddled on the couch watching The Fast and the Furious.

Months later and officially dating, Vi had gotten used to these “slower” days off. Simply enjoying each other’s company. Goblin was sound asleep on Vi’s legs.

Caitlyn noticed and smirked. “I can’t believe it took me nearly dying to get you two to play nice.”

Vi groaned and buried her face in Caitlyn’s boobs. “Don’t remind me. It was hell getting him to eat without you here.”

Caitlyn soothed Vi’s hair away. “I’m here now.”

“I know, and I love—you being here.”

“I love being here as well.”

There was a knock on the door that caused Vi to feel an immense amount of anger. “That better be food.”

“Actually,” Caitlyn gently pushed her girlfriend and cat off her lap.

“Wait, I’ll get it.”

Caitlyn rolled her eyes as she opened the door. “ Now you offer.” she let out an excited squeal. “Oh my goodness it’s here!”

Vi sat up which caused Goblin to let out a displeased noise, though he never moved from the couch. The bruiser rose from the couch when Caitlyn carefully brought a box inside with holes all around it. “What’s this?”

Caitlyn gently placed it on the living room carpet and sat down. “A gift for you. For everything you’ve done for me these past months. They’ve been incredible. You helped through my therapy and physical recovery. For your birthday, I should’ve gotten her sooner but…”

Vi fell silent and slowly slid to the floor when Caitlyn motioned her over. “I swear if you got me a cat that you were eye-balling at the pet store the other week,” She smiled even though she reluctantly opened the box expecting to see another demon hissing at her, but she froze at the wagging tail and panting puppy. “You got me a dog! Oh my god, come here.”

With gentle hands Vi reached in and lifted the Targonian Shepherd. A wild ball of fluff.

Caitlyn watched with a pleased grin, while holding onto Goblin. “I remember you telling me you had a shepherd mix growing up. And I was looking at the bed of puppies before I saw you approaching me in the store—panicked and started looking at the cats.”

The deputy was giggling as the puppy ran around. “You’re so pretty! You’re so precious! Look at you!”

“What are you going to name her?” Caitlyn asked while petting the puppy who ran past the glaring cat.

Vi scooped up the ball of brown fur with a dust of gray and black. “Cherry. The topping to this beautiful family I have. Thanks so much, cupcake.” Vi crawled closer to the sheriff and put her heart into the gentle and soft kiss. “I love you, Caitlyn Kiramman. I love you so fucking much.”

“And I love you, Violet Lane.”

Three may have been a crowd, but four was perfect for Vi.
