I.
The first time was an accident, as per most things when it came to Koushi. Except this time instead of his shoes making a funny noise or Daichi misspeaking, he’d merely grabbed Daichi’s arm.
“Just a minute,” he said before dropping to one knee, Daichi turning to watch him tie his shoe while he took a sip of his coffee. They’d gotten up early to get the most out of their day pass, something Koushi would normally complain about but he was all smiles today despite the lack of sleep, if he’d slept. He’d been so excited last night Daichi would be surprised if he’d actually gotten any amount of sleep at all.
“Oh my god, look at that!” a voice gasped beside them.
“He’s proposing!”
Daichi looked to Koushi, his already husband of two years, who had not yet seized his shoe laces, cheeks flushing pink at the attention.
“They’re so cute!”
And in a single moment Koushi had gone from mildly embarrassed to radiant with mischief.
“Daichi,” he said loud enough Daichi was sure these gossiping ne’er-do-wells could hear, “love of my life, father to my cat, will you do me the great honor and accept my hand in marriage?” Heat poured into Daichi’s face, aware there were suddenly much more than the two set of eyes on them; someone else had gasped, they were stopping traffic.
“Koushi,” he hissed but it was ineffective, Koushi reaching for his hand with a smile.
“Please, love, say yes.”
“Say yes!” someone called and face burning Daichi couldn’t help but laugh breathlessly, letting Koushi take his hand.
“Koushi.”
“Please?”
“We’re already married.”
“C’mon Dai,” Koushi whispered with a grin, “give the people what they want.”
Daichi pulled Koushi to his feet, halfway intending to tell everyone it was a misunderstanding, but instead he found Koushi kissing him instead, hugging him tight.
Ah fuck it.
Daichi squeezed Koushi tight, pulling back only to exhale a ‘yes’ before stealing another kiss. There was a cheer from the crowd, Koushi laughing into Daichi’s mouth.
II.
“I wonder if we get anything for proposing here,” Koushi said, kicking his heels against the retaining wall where they were currently resting in the shade. There was a stream of people walking in both directions, and this place was ideal to people watch. Koushi popped another handful of popcorn into his mouth, while Daichi slurped his Dole Whip and wondered if Koushi was right.
“What do you mean?”
“Like when it’s your birthday, restaurants give you a free dessert? I wonder if Disney would give us dinner for proposing here.”
“We didn’t propose here though.”
Koushi held the back of his hand to Daichi’s forehead.
“You feeling okay? Did you black out during my dramatic proposal?”
“Koushi, you know what I mean. Even if they did, that’s dishonest. We’re married,” Daichi flashed his ring for emphasis, Koushi’s face erupting into a beaming smile. Daichi’s heart was suddenly so full he seized Koushi’s hand to squeeze it, to press his lips to his husband’s knuckles, Koushi drew his face closer to kiss him. Then Koushi was pulling away, Daichi sighing in complaint, opening his eyes to find Koushi taking a knee again.
“Koushi!” he squawked.
“Sweetheart, I’ve loved you since the day I met you, ever since you beamed me in the face with the volleyball at our first practice, would you make me the happiest man at the happiest place on earth?”
Daichi was aware of the pineapple ice cream melting onto his fingers.
“Koushi stop it!”
“Come on babe, will you marry me?”
Somebody cooed. Daichi met Koushi’s eyes crinkled with suppressed laughter. He’d taken off his own ring and was offering it to Daichi.
“Koushi, knock it off.”
“Aw, look!” somebody called.
Daichi grimaced.
“Yes, okay, now get up.”
Koushi had seized his hand, and was in the process of pushing his ring onto Daichi’s finger.
“Koushi’s it’s gonna…”
It ceased to move over Daichi’s first knuckle.
“Oh, shit,” Koushi whispered but he was still grinning.
After a twenty minute struggle with soap in the bathroom they finally got Koushi’s ring off Daichi’s finger.
III.
“Hey! Hey!” Koushi leaned over Daichi’s shoulder to point. “Look!” Daichi turned in the direction Koushi was pointing but it was too late, his husband was already pulling on him toward the unsuspecting Mouse. “Hey could you take our picture,” he asked a woman nearby as he dragged Daichi toward the larger than life Mickey. She agreed, Koushi greeted Mickey and gave him a hug.
“Okay, now picture time!”
Daichi shuffled beside Koushi, turning to face the woman. She snapped one photo and Daichi braced himself for a second when Koushi was tugging on his hand, dropping to a knee.
“Koushi, I swear to god.”
“Daichi, will you marry me?”
“Sorry, I’m already married,” Daichi said, putting his hands on his hips and holding up his hand so their witnesses could see the ring. The woman gasped, snapping another photo. Mickey shook his head.
“What’s wrong with you, fella?” he asked Koushi bopping him on the head with one of his oversized foam hands.
“Boo,” Koushi jeered, swatting Mickey off. “Just trying to rekindle the magic in our marriage but clearly it’s dead!” There was another gasp and Daichi groaned.
“What’s wrong with you, fella?” Mickey turned his question to Daichi.
They reviewed the pictures in line for their next ride.
“Mickey is totally giving you a death glare in all these photos,” Koushi said zooming in on the mascot’s face on his phone which was incapable of any emotion besides joy. Daichi snorted.
IV.
“Daichi.”
“Hey Daichi.”
“Daichi, let’s ride this!”
Daichi had been nodding off in the midday heat at the picnic bench where they’d eaten their overpriced lunch.
“Huh?”
He lifted his head to look at the map to some kind of log flume ride Koushi was pointing out.
“There’s a water splash down at the end, it’s gonna feel so good!”
“That does sound good,” Daichi agreed, mopping the sweat from his forehead. Koushi had cleared their trash in a second and stuffed the map back into his bag, dragging Daichi up to find the ride.
It wasn’t anything special. Fun? Yes. Absolutely. Especially with Koushi vibrating in the seat beside him, grabbing his arm through the “rapids” section.
“Here it comes! Here it comes!” Koushi called as they reached the climax, the drop into the splash down. Daichi couldn’t help but give a whoop of joy as they dropped down, crashing into the water, Koushi cackling the whole way. The two of them climbed out, dripping more than a little bit with the delightfully cold water.
“I think they take a picture on the drop at this ride,” Koushi was saying, suddenly pulling Daichi back toward the show building.
“What do you mean?”
“They took a picture when we went over the fall at the end, and then you can buy it like a souvenir,” Koushi said, pulling some soaked paper from his pocket as they passed a trashcan and tossing it in with a muttered ‘ugh’.
“I’m sure I look awful,” Daichi said, there was no way that photo came out nice.
“Noo, don’t be such a negative goatee, you sound just like Asahi,” Koushi jeered. They reached the kiosk window where they could see the last twenty logs of people displayed up on the screen with numbers to reference which you wanted a copy of.
“It’s you!” the lady declared when she saw them and Daichi turned with suspicion to look at Koushi who was already giggling. The lady already had their photo printed out, slapping it down on the counter. “Congratulations!” she said.
Daichi stared at the photo.
He and Koushi in the front seat. He had his eyes shut in the picture mouth open with glee. Koushi beside him holding up a scrawled sign. No doubt the paper he’d just thrown into the trash minutes ago. Two words written.
Marry Me
Daichi turned to look at Koushi was smiling big as the sun, the lady watching with bated breath.
“You asshole,” Daichi told him, grabbing hold of Koushi’s cheeks to pull him in for a giggly kiss.
“Say yes?” Koushi asked when Daichi had pulled back, he wasn’t smirking. A small quiet smile. Not for the lady’s benefit.
“Yes.”
Daichi kissed him again.
They got their souvenir photo for free.
V.
“Will you marry me?” Koushi whispered it across the dinner table, they’d made a reservation to round out their day at the park and the place was packed.
“You’ve got to wait until the waitress is over here or else how are they going to know?” Daichi answered him, Koushi giving him a funny smile.
“I don’t care about them. Will you be mine, forever?” He reached his hand across the table palm up. Daichi didn’t know what he was playing at but with the smile Koushi was giving him there didn’t seem to be any other answer than to set his hand in Koushi’s. “Please?”
“I’m already yours, Koushi,” Daichi assured him and Koushi flushed.
“Can I get you two anything else?” the waitress had reappeared with her big smile. Koushi’s eyes didn’t leave Daichi’s.
“Nah, we’re good,” he answered.
“Dessert, we wanted dessert,” Daichi piped up and Koushi laughed.
“What can I get you?”
Daichi looked back to Koushi, if he was going to propose again, now would be the time to do it, he didn’t know if they gave out free dessert for proposals but now was the time to try.
“Whatever you want, Dai,” Koushi said which was not an answer to the question he was asking.
“Chocolate mousse please.”
“Two of them?”
“Just one, we’ll share,” Koushi said.
“Two,” Daichi told the woman, “Or he’s going to eat all of it.”
“Dai,” Koushi groaned as the waitress walked off.
“What? It’s true. Why didn’t you do it then? When she was at the table?”
“Do what?”
“Propose?”
“Daichi? Are you feeling okay? We’re already married,” Koushi said with a little wicked grin.
“That hasn’t stopped you once today. You did it five minutes ago, you should’ve waited.”
Koushi rolled his eyes.
“I wanted it to be between just you and me.”
Daichi’s heart thumped.
“What?”
“I thought to myself ‘I want to spend the rest of my life with this guy’. And just thought I should say something.”
“Koushi,” Daichi felt his eyes sting.
“Hey! Daichi! Don’t cry!” Koushi slapped his free hand down on the table, “They’ll think we’re breaking up!” Daichi gave a wet snort and Koushi squeezed his hand tighter with a smile.
+1
They’d barely made it in time to grab a good spot to watch the fireworks going off over the water, the orchestral music piped in all around them. Daichi slipped his hand into Koushi’s, it’d been such a fun day, good to have time just the two of them, no house chores or work to worry about. There was a weight on his shoulder, Koushi laying his head down, face bathed in the glow of bursting reds and golds. Daichi loved him so much. It was clear today, as it was to him every day.
“Hey Koushi?” he asked almost soft enough it was lost to the sound of blooming fireworks and sweetly playing strings. Koushi hummed turning his face up to look at Daichi, soft smile on his face. “Will you marry me?”
Koushi’s eyes crinkled as he smiled, hands cupping Daichi’s face.
“Absolutely,” he said, pulling Daichi in for a kiss.
