Work Text:
Byakuya opens his locker to a swarm of heart-shaped boxes bursting out. Most of them were covered in sparkles and hot pink in color. It hurt Byakuya's eyes, but he had other matters to handle right now.
"What the fuc- ''
"Woah, did the Great Togami Company Heir almost swear?" Makoto playfully commented beside him.
"Oh shut up, you." Byakuya retorted before looking at his mess of a locker. It was a lost cause anyways. The chocolates were even on the floor.
Makoto leaned onto his shoulder. He eyed the valentine's chocolates with amusement. "Aren't you the least bit curious as to who sent these chocolates? They could be a future Togami heiress." He teased. Makoto knew it was a sensitive topic for Byakuya, but still took every chance to talk about it. Probably to water down how agonizing that might be for him.
"You're basically asking me to go through a hundred people to find one actually worthy person. A waste of my time." Byakuya tried to slam his locker door shut, but it didn't really work in his favour.
"Well… maybe we should clean this up before more chocolates are smashed." Makoto suggested as he started picking up the chocolates on the floor.
Byakuya would never do such commoner work, but he at least knew how to clean up after himself; despite the mess not being his. They dumped the chocolates in a rubbish bin just nearby. Thanking whatever god that there weren't any students in the hallway.
"There! Although it's concerning how much chocolate has just gone to waste…"
Byakuya hummed. "Well, what about you?"
"Hm?"
"Your own amount of chocolates?"
"Ha, the ultimate, powerful Togami heir interested in my valentines?" Makoto chuckled.
Byakuya ignored what that implied. "Just say it Makoto. I'm just curious."
Makoto looked at him then shrugged. "Well, I only got one. Not like some people I know."
One? With a guy like Makoto?
"One, huh?" Byakuya said with a questioning tone.
"Oh c'mon! Don't say it like that. We can't all be the charming heir here. Actually, I'm surprised I got any at all." Makoto exclaimed.
"Who do you think it's from?"
"Jealous, Byakuya?"
Of course I'm not. I have a whole other line of people available.
I'm not.
"Just think of it as… normal friend talk, I guess." He replied with a softer tone than before.
Makoto faked a shocked expression and drew his hands to his mouth, gasping. "Oh my, Byakuya referred to me as his friend! I thought I'd never see the day!"
Friend.
"Don't let it get to your head, Naegi."
Makoto stopped and looked back to Byakuya, pouting. "Why am I back to Naegi again?"
I can't take him seriously with that look.
"Think of it as punishment for referring to our relationship as being 'friends'." Byakuya retorted, accidentally adding too much edge to it, but he continued his way to the classroom. Without waiting for Makoto.
"Hey, why are you acting like that all of the sudden?"
Byakuya didn't mean for that to come out so viciously, he honestly didn't know the reason why either. He thought it was better to completely avoid the situation than confront it right now, anyways.
And he had a valid reason, very valid. A Togami shouldn't be causing a scene in public.
Well. It shouldn't be regarded as a scene either. It was just talk.
Why was he getting so worked up?
God. I'm going crazy with how much time I'm spending here recently. Those people are probably influencing my actions.
And by people he meant Class 78. Byakuya wouldn't admit it, but they've grown on him. He probably would willingly stay for their inane conversations from time to time. Although mostly because of the brunet.
Makoto's phone buzzed while he tried to catch up. "Oh, Kyoko wants to meet with me. Hey um, save a seat?"
"Sure."
He's none of my business. I'll just get to class before him. His tardiness should not affect my own.
He reached the class, although not having a full house, they were in their usual antics. Byakuya sat down while everyone talked about their day.
A while passed.
Makoto still wasn't in. Byakuya sighed and decided to spend his time on more meaningful stuff, indulging in a new book he'd borrowed.
He could feel Fukawa's eyes on him, though he ignored her slimy gaze and focused on the contents of the book. Soon, Makoto walked in the room.
The brunette had a heart shaped box in his arms. Wait. What-
"Hey! Makoto! What'cha got there!" Leon rushed over to Makoto's sides and he grabbed the object.
"L-Leon! You can't just do that…!" Makoto tried to get it back, but failed. "Leon!"
And there the object was, shown clearly for all of the classroom to see. A black colored box wrapped with a single maroon ribbon.
"No way! Makoto's scoring some girls?!"
Most of the class rushed over to the front. Loud chatter could be heard from the group, but Byakuya couldn't even stand up and reach towards them.
"Makoto! Woah, these are like- quality chocolates!"
"Hey! Are you reaching for them?! Those are Makoto's, y'know!"
"Ah… Makoto, indulging in the 3d sides of romance, sounds just like him…"
"That… sounds kinda weird, dude."
Byakuya shut his book. Loud enough for Fukawa behind him to be startled, but not enough for the group in front to react.
Hmph. Imbeciles getting excited over some stupid, trivial thing.
It wasn't long before some of the more later individuals arrived. Junko, Kyoko, Celeste and the like.
Although Kyoko had a small smirk on her face, as if taunting him. She looked back to Makoto, face turning into a bit more of a softer look. Byakuya could feel his heart beat slightly increase.
If that's how she wants to play it, so be it. I won't lose this competition. I'll get him first.
He ignored Chihiro's slight look of concern. Looking back from Kyoko to Byakuya.
It almost looked like they thought Byakuya was going mad.
He wasn't, of course. He's better than that.
—
"Hey Byakuya? Were you the one that put that message on my desk-"
"Makoto."
The boy visibly straightens. He had a worried expression on his face. With what Byakuya was going to do, he'd have a sense of dread too.
Byakuya walks closer. Until he's just inches away from his face.
"Makoto. I'm in love with you."
He sees the boy's eyes widen as pink blush tints his face.
He's always noticed Makoto's freckles, but they were even more beautiful with that shade of red.
They stood there on the rooftop, just staring into each other's eyes. He started getting doubts. Maybe Byakuya should've taken the hint. Makoto isn't interested.
Reject me, stab me, do whatever. I can’t stand this look of despair on his fac-
“I… I love you too!”
Hm.
"You… do?" Byakuya stuttered out. He could feel his own blush spread across his face.
Makoto smiled. "Y-yeah! It's actually been so for a while! I'm… surprised you didn't know."
God, I'm such an idiot.
Byakuya could see Makoto reach back and scratch his neck, a nervous act the brunette always did. So he went in and kissed Makoto.
It was a chaste kiss, enough for Makoto to push away if he didnt want it. Byakuya pulled away but still had his arms around Makoto, admiring the flush still on his face.
Makoto's eyes were widened. He probably couldn't believe it. Byakuya couldn't either.
"You were getting nervous. I wanted you to relax."
"Ah!" Makoto blushed even more. He raised his hands to try and cover his face but Byakuya gently held them down.
"Please don't do that. Let me see you."
Makoto stared at him before he laughed softly. Byakuya was confused.
"You sound so much like some romance protagonist. It's honestly so cute." Makoto continued his chuckle after that.
"Hmph." Byakuya rests his head on Makoto's shoulders. He still didn't let go of Makoto, instead lying onto him, yet not enough to knock them both over.
He closed his eyes, embracing the moment. Even if it felt small in comparison with his other acts, he felt like he was on the top of the world.
"I guess. As long as you aren't uncomfortable."
"...I could never be with you."
Byakuya grunted. "Smooth. Who's the protagonist now?"
"I always feel like one with you. You mean so much to me, Byakuya." Makoto said as let his hands drift to Byakuya's hair and slightly ruffled it, although not enough to ruin it.
Byakuya was silent before he spoke again, "... I also wanted to apologize too, about the way I acted in the hall. It was unnecessary of me to lash out like that."
Makoto held on tighter. "I forgive you, Byakuya. Although I think it's a little cute that you get jealous easily over such things." He laughed again.
Byakuya sighed, but feeling smug inside. "I guess I just have to show how much I really do cherish you."
"I'd appreciate that."
