The sunset over the quaint town drew out many people to their balconies on the balmy night, but not the newly weds.
Daisy and Daniel Johnson-Sousa were curled up on their hotel bed, both wearing the complimentary fuzzy bathrobes.
“I can do it”, Daisy murmured, trying to tie a knot in a cherry stem with just her tongue, whilst pulling the most unflattering faces.
“Oh wow,” Daniel mocked her playfully, “if I knew about your special skill, I would have married you a lot sooner!”
Daisy contained her laughter, finally opened her mouth, and pulled out the mangled cherry stem and indeed, it was somewhat turned around itself.
“You’re a woman of many talents”, Daniel chuckled as the stem unfolded again between her fingers.
“Okay, so I can’t do it, but I can kick your ass, and don’t think I won’t!”
“Yes Quake, of course,” he replied dutifully, before enjoying her protest.
“Don’t call me that!”, Daisy laughed, while poking him in the ribs.
“Oh yes, I forgot, we’re married now, it’s mrs Quake” he grinned, avoiding her prodding hands.
Daisy scrunched up her nose and shook her head at this gorgeous, albeit goofy, man. “What am I gonna do with you,” she said, holding his face in her hands.
He leaned in to kiss her soft lips when she smiled. “She’s awake, want to feel?”
It was the fourth day in a row where Daniel had placed his hands on Daisy’s belly in hopes of feeling their baby kick, with no success so far.
“I think she’s still a little too small for me to feel,” Daniel sighed, resting his head on Daisy’s lap, his cheek pressed up against the smallest of baby bumps.
Gently twirling his hair with her fingers, Daisy looked down at her husband. “Give it time, maybe she’s shy…”
“I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait,” Daniel said, and reached his hand up to caress Daisy’s cheek. “Silver lining is that the kicking doesn’t hurt you yet, does it?”
Daisy shook her head with a soft smile. “It’s more like a cute flutter, still.”
“You’re really the most beautiful bride”, he remarked, sitting back up and tucking her hair behind her ear.
“And you’re a doofus”, she said with her head tilted.
“Kiss me, mrs Doofus,” he whispered and pulled her in his arms.
Even though they didn’t get much sleep that night, Daisy awoke feeling refreshed. Despite knowing better, she stuck her nose in the sunflowers by the open window. They smelled of nothing, but the sweet scent of the bakery down the street did reach her nose. With a pleasant stretch, she walked through the room, catching her reflection as she passed the mirror.
She turned to the side, lifted up her lacy camisole, and admired the small curve of her abdomen.
Daniel, naked and barely covered by the crisp white hotel sheet, leaned his head on his hand and admired her as well.
“Can I confess something,” he asked, his voice a little sleepy.
She sat down on the foot of the bed. “Of course”, she yawned, looking sweet with her unbrushed hair, and one strap of her top hanging down her shoulder.
“Every now and then, I forget for a second that you’re pregnant, and then when I remember I get so happy all over again”, he admitted, looking a little shy.
“Oh, that happens to me too! Less now that I can feel her, but still.”
A bit relieved she felt the same, he observed her, as she lazily gazed out the window, absentmindedly playing with a strand of her hair.
Daniel opened the blanket with an inviting gesture, fully revealing himself in the early morning light, and offered “come lay back down, and I’ll order us some breakfast.”
She pretended to have to think about it, and bargained “strawberry pancakes? Orange juice?”
With a chuckle, Daniel moved to the foot of the bed, impatient to sink his teeth in that soft spot by her shoulder, knowing how it instantly melted her every time.
“Oh and croissants?”, she managed to continue as he tenderly kissed her behind the ear.
“And coffee with caffeine…” she sighed, giving in to temptation, and raising up her arms.
He took off her silky top and looked into her eyes.
“I’ll get you whatever you want”, he said, a little out of breath, “if I can have you now.”
Unexpectedly turned on by his old-fashioned phrasing, Daisy pulled away the sheets and laid down beside him.
His mouth found its way to the soft part of her shoulder while he grabbed her round ass in his firm hands, and she moaned so loud the maids walking down the hotel hallway smiled and shook their heads.
Three bliss-full days of honeymooning later, Daisy was applying some concealer to the bite mark on her shoulder before putting on her tank top, when the kicking felt a little stronger.
“Babe, come feel!”
Daniel rushed to her and put his hands on her belly.
Daisy took his left hand and moved it. “There.”
With a gasp, Daniel looked down at the bump and back at his wife.
“I felt a little poke. Was that her?”
Daisy nodded. “That’s your daughter saying hi!”
They stood like this for a while, until Daniel noticed the bruise on her shoulder.
“I’m so sorry,” he said, both remorseful and a little proud.
She lifted up his shirt and showed his scratched back to the mirror.
“I think we’re even,” she chuckled.
“Now I have never been on honeymoon before”, Daniel said as he hugged his bride, “but this one is my favorite.”
