Felix was tired- he was tired of the fighting, of the constant war going on. But there wasn’t a way for him to stop it, and just leave the field. He couldn’t do that, and neither could anyone else. He wanted to be back in the academy, he thought to himself as he made his way across the fields. He didn’t want to be fighting a war against the Empire at all.
His steps took him through groups of enemies. The swordsman’s blade swung through the air, and magic followed from his free hand as he destroyed the enemies in his way. The professor had left him with Sylvain and Dimitri to clear one side, while they distracted the main forces from the front with Ashe and Mercedes, while Ingrid and Anette worked on the other side.
A few of the soldier slipped past him, but Felix didn’t pay much attention. Sylvain and Dimitri weren’t too far behind him anyways, so a few men shouldn’t be anything the two couldn’t handle. He knocked away a swing at his legs, a blast of magic sending the enemy away from him as he turned to see where the closest target was.
His vision seemed to narrow as he saw things in slow motion. Dimitri was facing off against a heavy armored man, their strikes so hard it was raising sparks. But one of the soldiers that had slipped past Felix had slipped behind Dimitri. He couldn’t get a shot in from here, his brain processing the warning shout from Sylvain over the fighting around him before he saw red.
Dimitri roared in pain, swinging his lance and the solider fell back as Felix’s feet started to move. He nearly tripped over a corpse in his haste, knocking away anyone who tried to fight him- he barely even spared them a glance as he crossed the battle to where Dimitri was. A shock of magic lanced through the swordsman fighting him, before Sylvain was upon him, a second lance breaking through their defenses.
Felix paid no attention to Sylvain as he dismounted his horse, kneeling beside Dimitri where he was kneeling on the ground. The dagger that had stabbed him was still there, holding his cloak against his side as blood darkened the fabric. Felix felt panic bubbling up as Dimitri gasped when he tried to touch him.
“Dima?” He whispered, crouching beside him. “Dima, look at me.” He pleaded. “I shouldn’t have let them get past him, but please…” He briefly heard Sylvain say he was going to get Mercedes, the sound of hooves fading as he ran, but Felix didn’t look away as Dimitri looked up at him.
He met the blue eye that focused on him, noticing the pain and determination laced in it. “I won’t let this kill me.” He rasped out. “Not yet…. I have things I need to do.” He struggled to get up but Felix put a hand on his shoulder to stop him.
“No- No, Dimitri.” He said firmly. “You’re not continuing right now. You just got stabbed in the side- and there’s far too much blood.” Dimitri only frowned but offered no protest as Felix used his own sword to carefully cut as much of his cloak away as possible. The cloak could be sewn back together later, he was more concerned with leaving less work for Mercedes to do. He knew very little in terms of faith, but he knew enough for small spells.
It almost had a small laugh bubble up. He had never been one for magic, thinking it would be pointless on the field. Yet here he was, almost wishing he knew more to help Dimitri as Sylvain rushed to get help. His gaze darkened the more he revealed of the wound and the longer he heard Dimitri’s small wheezes of pain. He glanced up a few times, watching the blonde’s expression carefully as he looked to see if Sylvain was on his way back yet.
“You know, sometimes you act like you don’t care, but I think you love me.” Dimitri commented suddenly, and Felix froze for a moment, staring at him in stunned silence. He blinked a few times, lips slowly parting.
“Dimitri… We’re married.” He said slowly, as if the blonde had lost his mind. Maybe he had, Felix thought. The pain of getting stabbed had made the boar finally lose it. He shook his head a little over the small laugh from Dimitri, but any further comments were stopped by the heavy sound of hooves and Sylvain’s shout as he made his way over. Felix stepped back as Mercedes jumped down and rushed over. He left her to heal Dimitri, meeting Sylvain’s eyes. “What?” He demanded as Sylvain studied him, walking over to stand beside him.
“Your face is red. You okay, Felix?” Sylvain asked, and Mercedes looked up in concern. Felix huffed, elbowing Sylvain. “Ow- jeez. Alright, forget I was concerned.” He winced theatrically, and Felix rolled his eyes as Mercedes carefully helped Dimitri to his feet. “How’s he doing?” He asked suddenly, all trace of joking gone in an instant.
Mercedes paused, chewing her lower lip. “I think he needs to pull back. I did what I could but it’s not much.” He admitted. “I apologize.”
“You helped him get to his feet, I think that’s more than enough.” Felix said simply, moving over and wrapping an arm around Dimitri, the blonde’s arm around his shoulder as he shifted. “I’ll take him back towards the camp, and off the field. Send a few others to take our place. It’s not that far from here. You two should let the professor know we’re going.”
Sylvain nodded, smiling a little. “Well, your highnesses, we’ll leave you to it. Mercedes?” He waved a hand, helping her up before mounting his horse. “Take care of yourselves on the way back.” He added, and Felix nodded as Mercedes waved a farewell before they were taking off back towards the main battle.
Felix shifted Dimitri’s arm a little on his shoulder and glanced at him to see Dimitri’s good eye twinkling with amusement as he stared. “What are you staring at?” He huffed as they started walking.
“Sylvain called us ‘your highnesses’ and you said nothing. Are you finally over your hatred of being called that? Or was it just embarrassment?” He asked, and Felix shot him a glare.
“If you don’t stop talking, I will drop you here and head back to camp alone.” He threatened. Dimitri’s booming laugh echoed around them as they slowly made their way off the battlefield, and back towards camp. Felix didn’t leave his husband’s side the rest of the night, watching over him as he started to slowly heal.
