Work Text:

It’s a chilly evening.

Lena gets out of her car in front of the CatCo building and bids her driver a quick goodbye, meaning he’s free to go home for the night. Then closes the door and heads to the big glass doors.

The first floor is almost empty— it’s a bit past the regular working hours, and the movement in the lobby is mainly caused by people exiting the building. Lena is not used to watching this rush; she used to leave her office at L-Corp when everyone was already very well on their way home or sleeping. Times change, and now she’s the one visiting Kara at work when it’s past departing time.

She crosses the room to the elevators, greets some of the workers she’s familiar with, and then enters the car. Watching the doors closing before her, she presses the button to Kara’s floor without glancing at the panel— she’s used to it. It’s a quick ride up; soon enough, the elevator is dinging, and she’s right at the bullpen that is so familiar for one reason or another. It would be dark if Kara’s office’s walls were not made of glass; the light from inside washes through the open door in a faint glow. The ambiance makes Lena feel something funny, like peace— her brain sometimes works in a weird way.

Her eyes adjust to the lighting, and she recognizes Kara’s silhouette from the outside. Is she… dancing? Lena squints, walking forward with a smile adorning her lips. As she nears the entrance, her girlfriend’s form becomes more evident, and so does the sound from the office. There’s music playing, not very loud, but Lena recognizes it. She can see Kara is holding papers as she sways happily through the room but doesn’t seem to be getting any work done. Lena laughs softly, leaning at the door, and the blonde finally notices her. Her face lights up at the sight of Lena, breaking into a sheepish grin, but the shorter woman can tell she’s not embarrassed.

Kara puts the papers on the desk and walks toward Lena, her smile softening as she leans in to take the brunette’s hand. “What— Kara!” Her bag falls to the floor, Kara’s hands on her waist as she sways them around; “Oh no, my love, I can’t dance like you.” Lena laughs.

Kara scoffs and looks at her, incredulous, “I know you didn’t just quote that lesbian movie.”

“Oh, but I did.” Lena’s hand tighten around Kara’s shoulders to prevent herself from stumbling. “And I’m going to quote the book when you less expect it.” Kara chuckles softly into Lena’s hair, and the song ends, but they keep slowly moving from side to side.

They fall into a comfortable silence for an instant before another song begins, “I see a little of Jean in you,” Lena hums, silently asking for her to elaborate on the thought. “You took over your dad’s business just like her, and you used to feel a bit lonely in your big house— penthouse, same difference, and you’re both scientists.” Kara smirks, pulling away slightly to look at Lena, “Also, you happen to also be a brunette in love with a blonde woman.”

Lena laughs loudly, squeezing her girlfriend’s shoulders. “That makes a lot of sense, actually.” She says when the laughter dies out. “Does that make you Lydia?”

“I’d like to think so.” The blonde keeps the distance previously added so she can be close and still look at her face. “You were my gay awakening just as Jean was hers, so….”

“I still can’t believe I’m your first.” The Luthor cracks a small at that.

“And last, hopefully.” One of Kara’s hands leaves Lena’s waist to touch her face. She gets a glimpse of Lena’s pretty smile before pressing their lips together, sighing in pure contentment at the feeling washing over her as the brunette leans into the kiss. The music is still playing, but they cease their movement around the office.

When they part, Lena smiles again and caresses the baby hairs at the back of Kara’s neck, “I’d love to keep dancing to Frankie Valli with you, but my feet are starting to hurt from these heels.”

“Say no more,” Kara flashes around her desk to gather her things, turn off the TV system and her computer, and then picks up Lena’s bag before appearing by her side again, giving the younger woman whiplash. “Let’s go home; I’ll give you a message and run us a warm bath, okay?”

Lena sighs happily, leaning into Kara’s embrace again, “Perfect.”

Notes:

i swear to god i'm trying to make up for the 3 days i missed...

taylor swift helped me with this one. she brought it to my attention that "lavender haze" was commonly used in the 50's to describe being in love and it made me think of my favourite book (Tell It To The Bees, which is actually the one mentioned in the story) and how it takes place during that decade, and I was also listening to Can't Take My Eyes Off You by Frankie Valli and one thing lead to another, now you have this! it's really short and nothing special, but i was so happy writing it that i just hope you enjoy it too.
