Chapter Text
On a quiet afternoon, a boy named Kim Dokja sat at his desk, pouring his heart into a love letter for his best friend, Yoo Joonghyuk. From the moment they met, Kim had felt an undeniable pull toward Yoo Joonghyuk, a connection that blossomed into something deeper with each passing day.
Today was the day he had chosen to confess his feelings. As he gathered his courage, his heart raced with anticipation. However, just as he was about to speak, his world shattered. Through the window, he saw Yoo Joonghyuk and Lee Seolhwa on the rooftop, wrapped in a warm embrace. In that moment, Kim Dokja's heart twisted painfully; he misinterpreted the scene as a kiss. Despair flooded over him, and he dashed down the stairs, unable to bear the sight any longer.
As he ran, Yoo Joonghyuk and Lee Seolhwa caught a glimpse of him. “Kim Dokja!” Yoo Joonghyuk called out, But Kim Dokja was already far away, his heart heavy with heartbreak.
Alone in the bathroom, he let the tears flow freely. “I'm already too late to confess my feelings to him…" he thought bitterly. "Of course, even if I confess to him, he could never accept me. Lee Seolhwa is the most beautiful and kind woman in this school and people like her… Yoo Joonghyuk and Lee Seolhwa are suited to each other. While I’m just a gay freak—just his best friend."
As the clock struck 5:00 PM, Kim Dokja prepared to leave for home. His eyes fell upon the love letter he had crafted for Yoo Joonghyuk, and with a heavy heart, he tossed it into the trash.
He stepped out into the world, feeling a sense of emptiness engulf him. Suddenly, as he walked home, a car sped toward him. The screech of tires echoed in his ears. *Beep! Beep! Crash!* When he regained consciousness, pain shot through his body. Blood soaked his clothes, and an overwhelming sense of dread washed over him.
"So many things happened today," he thought. "First, I saw Yoo Joonghyuk with her. Now, I’m in a car accident. Is this how it ends? Is this where I die?" With that thought, he began to close his eyes, surrendering to the darkness.
Meanwhile, Yoo Joonghyuk, on his way home, stumbled upon the love letter left behind in the classroom. Alone, he wondered who it could be from. Just as he prepared to read it, his phone rang, shattering the silence. "Hello?" he answered, tension rising in his voice. An urgent voice on the line caused his heart to race. Without hesitation, he rushed to the hospital.
Upon arrival, he pushed through the doors, his demeanor tense. His eyes scanned the waiting area until he found Han Sooyoung, her face streaked with tears. "Where is Kim Dokja?" he demanded, voice rough with urgency. Han Sooyoung could barely speak through her sobs. "He’s in surgery, Yoo Joonghyuk. They’re doing everything they can."
Frustration bubbled within him. "What happened? How did this happen?" His voice rose, laced with panic. Just then, a doctor stepped into the waiting area, and Yoo Joonghyuk approached him, determination etched on his face. "How is he, Doc? Is he going to be okay?" The doctor’s expression was grave. "We tried our best to save him," he said, but his tone conveyed the severity of the situation.
Yoo Joonghyuk's heart dropped. "He didn’t die, right?" The desperation in his voice was palpable. "I'm really sorry, sir. Excuse me." The doctor turned away, leaving Yoo Joonghyuk reeling.
He stood frozen, disbelief washing over him. Kim Dokja was gone. Upon returning home, the weight of grief pressed down on him. He remembered the love letter and rifled through his bag, pulling it out with trembling hands.
As he read, the words hit him like a wave:
Dear Yoo Joonghyuk,
As I sit here reflecting on our friendship, I realize how connected we truly are, even when it feels like we’re worlds apart. Whenever I look up at the sky, I think of you. We share the same sun that brightens our days, the same stars that fill our nights with wonder, and the same moon that watches over us. Sometimes it feels like there’s so much distance between us, yet those celestial bodies are over 200,000 miles away, and yet they still bring us together. In the grand scheme of things, we are closer than we think. Time is the only barrier separating us—months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds constantly ticking away. But with each moment that passes, we inch closer to one another. I believe that eventually, there will come a time when the distance will vanish completely, and all that will remain is the bond we share. Please don’t miss me, because I know that it’s just a matter of time before we find our way back to each other. So when you think of me, remember that we aren’t as far apart as it may seem.
With all my heart, Kim Dokja.
As he finished reading, tears streamed down his face. He had been oblivious to Kim Dokja’s feelings. The realization crashed over him like a tidal wave—he felt the same but had never found the courage to say so. "I like you too, Kim Dokja. I'm really sorry. I was about to explain that we are not together and it was a misunderstanding. I didn’t mean for you to see that."
His heart ached with regret. In a daze, Yoo Joonghyuk stood to leave his room, but a sudden thought struck him. He rushed to the kitchen and spotted a kitchen knife near the sink. In a moment of despair, he wondered, "If I end my life, will I see Kim Dokja again?" Grabbing the knife, he prepared to take the irreversible step. As he stood there, he whispered his final words, "Let’s meet again, Kim Dokja," before plunging the knife into his own heart.
