Work Text:

Goliath and Xanatos circled each other, neither one willing to make the first move. The tension between them made the world feel as though it were crackling with electricity, the silence between them a deafening roar. So far the only evidence to suspect that Xanatos was the culprit to blame for the most recent experiment gone wrong was that his company funded it, but there was always some sort of game with him. Goliath just didn't know what it was yet.

"You're blowing this way out of proportion, you realize?" Xanatos said, breaking the silence as his pretty little mouth pulled into an infuriating smirk. "So the experiment went a little awry. It's not like I could've predicted that."

"'A little awry'? Is that what you call turning men into monsters that can't move without pain?" Goliath growled, breath carefully controlled and muscles tensed and ready for a fight. Blood rushed in his ears, every part of him on edge as he stared down his enemy.

Xanatos finally made the first move, lunging at him. The rocket on his battle suit propelled him forward faster than Goliath could dodge, sending them careening over the roof's edge. Goliath's wings flared out as he rolled with Xanatos clutching at his middle, the wind whipping around them as they clashed midair. This close Goliath could smell his cologne and the brandy on his breath, and something else that was entirely Xanatos.

The rocket on Xanatos's battle suit went into overdrive, Xanatos twisting them around to slam Goliath into a nearby building and drag him up against the wall just to slam him again into the roof. Goliath snarled in pain, rolling so that he was on top of Xanatos and pulling back his fist only for it to be caught by Xanatos. Even through the armor, Xanatos could feel the solid weight of Goliath bearing down on him.

"I suppose you think you have me pinned, don't you?" Xanatos asked, eyes glinting with an emotion Goliath didn't want to place. The rocket activated again and Goliath was dragged along once more, into the skies this time. Goliath attempted to escape Xanatos's grasp, but the battle suit was too strong and kept him in place.

Goliath clawed at the suit, tearing off chunks of metal as Xanatos made to slam him into the wall again. Giving up trying to escape, Goliath instead twisted them around just before impact to slam Xanatos into the wall, winding him. His grasp slipped and Goliath broke free, scaling the wall as he fell. Goliath heard the sound of the rocket activating as Xanatos soared up to meet him at the roof.

Dawn was breaking. Goliath needed to end this, and quickly, but Xanatos had other plans. The gun in his gauntlet activated, and Goliath just barely managed to get out of the way before he fired, the laser grazing his wing. He cried out and made to escape, but it was too late. The sun had breached the horizon, and he was stone once more.

Xanatos dropped out of his fighting stance, having completed his objective. He had his robots fighting the rest of the gargoyles, but they were programmed to stop once they were stone again. He didn't have to fight Goliath personally, but... he wanted to. All he needed was to distract them until dawn, and he very easily could've done that remotely, but fighting Goliath was always exhilarating.

Xanatos walked up to his now stone enemy, that same smirk on his face. His hand rested against Goliath's cheek.

"Until next time, darling."
