Two of a Kind

Summary:

In which the new student of Ouran Academy got more than she bargained for.

Y/N L/N, an unknown relative to the L/N family transfers from America into the top prestige school known as Ouran Academy. Her upbringing is a mystery as no mentions of her in articles serve which brings Kyouya to the question, who exactly is Y/N L/N?

Notes:

“Please don’t take offense in this,” She cut in, stopping again to face him. Though her gaze was anywhere but his own. “Don’t act nice to me just cause you have to. You’re one of the top students, it would only be for your own image. But I’m not interested in building a friendship on a false foundation.” Bouncing on the balls of her feet and hands clasping behind her back.

“Who said I wanted to be friends?” Kyoya counteracted. For a moment he pondered if what he said was too harsh. But when she had given him a satisfied smirk he returned with one of his own. A mutual understanding… and a beginning friendship. How interesting.

Chapter 1: First Love / Late Spring

Chapter Text

It’s not that the chairs were uncomfortable, it was the fact that she had been sitting for nearly an hour. No amount of adjustment would ease the ache in her butt though she had indeed tried. Soon enough the door had opened and she was ushered in only to sit in another chair. It wasn’t annoyance she had possessed but more of anxiety. Leg bouncing beneath the ridiculous skirt of the yellow dress. However, her eyes had remained on the desk.

“Mrs. L/N-”

“Please… just Y/N.”

“Y/N,” The chairman smiled and his elbows rested atop the desk. “Your father and I have already dealt with the paperwork. I have arranged for one of our top students to give you a tour right now if you so please.” She would feel awful if she had turned down the offer. He went through the trouble of finding a guide last minute.

“Of course. Thank you for the opportunity.” A faux smile and simple bow of the head. When she had stood the door had opened with perfect timing. He was tall. Short black hair that was carefully styled and glasses that sat comfortably on his nose. He was dressed in the male uniform; somehow, there was not a single bend in it.

“This is second-year Ootori Kyoya,” The chairman introduced. Standing up to guide her out and towards the boy. “He has volunteered to show you around the school. I look forward to seeing your work.”

“Eh… thank you for this opportunity.” Struggling with the pronunciation Kyoya easily noted that Japanese wasn’t her first language. Nonetheless, he had opened the door further for her to walk through and accompanied her side through the empty halls. He had made another note that she was quiet and it had only piqued his interest.

“I hear you transferred from America, am I correct?”

“Huh?” Looking up at him with wide eyes she had only nodded in affirmation. Gaze returning to the marble floors. “You heard correct.” Her answers were short. He couldn’t tell if she just didn’t talk much or maybe she wasn’t a people person. Sure he has heard of the Y/N family, one of the wealthiest in America. But there was no mention of a daughter. How interesting.

“How are you liking Tokyo so far?” He asked. “I’m sure it isn’t quite what you’re used to, but I’m sure there is something here you like.”

“I like the Sakura Blossoms.” Oh? So there was something she liked. The sakura blossoms weren’t precisely what he was expecting but it was an answer. Her head turned at his soft chuckle, watching in curiosity as he pushed his glasses up.

“Is that so? I’ll have to show you our gardens sometime. We have quite a collection of cherry blossoms. Anyways, this is our cafeteria.”

“This is the cafeteria?” Amazed at the size of it. Rows of tables, a fancy kitchen, and even a chandelier connected to the ceiling. “This looks like a ballroom.”

“Really? What were your cafeterias like?” Turning to continue on Y/N had traveled after him. Suddenly shy at his inquiry.

“Oh um… I’m not sure. I was homeschooled.”

“Oh.” It didn’t quite make sense to him. Why homeschool if you could afford a private school? Something didn’t add up. Perhaps she wasn’t actually a child of the L/N family? That could explain the fact he hasn’t heard of her. He would have to ask his father when he had a chance. Perhaps he would know. After an hour of walking around the school, the two of them made it back to the entrance and Kyoya had expressed a soft smile to which she didn’t return.

“That seems to be all, is there anything you have a preference to see?”

“Mmmmm.” Glancing up at the sky as she thought Y/N had soon returned her gaze to the taller lad. “Actually there is.”

“What is it?”

“Do you guys have an art room?”

“It would be my honor to show you.”

—---------------------------------------

“Everyone this is L/N F/N, she will be joining our class from now on. Please make your best efforts to help her feel as comfortable as you can!” Despite the teacher hushing the class, they had seemed to murmur amongst themselves. The girls were curious as to where she was from and the boys whispered about how cute she was. Kyoya had remained still at his desk, writing in his notebook while Tamaki gazed at her with an unknown look in his eyes.

After a brief introduction from herself, Y/N had made way to the only available spot. A desk right in front of Kyoya. Without thinking, Kyoya had offered a small smile to her as she approached to which she didn’t return. Only dipping her head in acknowledgment before sitting down. Huh, Kyoya had thought. Tough crowd. The teacher resumed the lesson and everyone had finally settled despite wondering curiosity. It was long and unbearable though eventually came to a halt for a dedicated 15-minute break. It was then Y/N was swarmed with lingering curiosity. Girls gushing on her hair while the boys were asking her where she was from. It was getting obvious how uncomfortable she was becoming.

“Hey Y/N,” Kyoya hummed out. Unbothering to lift his gaze from the notebook. “Didn’t you mention you were looking for the bathrooms?”

“Huh?” Turning around only to freeze in his gaze. Brows furrowed with confusion until realization dawned. “Oh uh, yes… please.”

With a nod, Kyoya stood with her following behind. Murmurs turned into silence as they left the room. Y/N was unsure why she needed to be shown the bathroom but nonetheless grateful to be rid of the attention. Almost as if… almost as if Kyoya knew. A keen eye he had.

“Enjoying class so far?” Kyoya inquired while barely glancing at her. “I imagine it can be quite stressful.”

“Mmm not really.”

“Oh?” A single brow rose as he stopped the moment she did. Turning to look at her. But Y/N’s gaze was focused outside the window. Lips parted in awe at the blooming cherry blossoms. He studied her for a moment and if he looked closely enough, he could see the holes of vacant piercings. Does that mean she had more or just those.

“I’ve taken these classes before,” Y/N finally said. Tearing her attention away from the scenery and continued walking down the hall. “So no, not stressful.”

“Interesting. Have you-”

—------

“Quite hogging the seat senpai!”

“Yea you’re manspreading too much!”

“How dare you make such an accusation?!”

Usual banter between the twins and the club’s king in the cafeteria. Groups of girls swooned from the sidelines while the boys snickered at their antics. While Honey and Mori snacked on their lunch Kyoya had typed on his laptop feverishly. Keeping the screen tilted from wondering eyes. ‘Y/N L/N.’ It had only brought up the family’s business and biographies of the husband and the wife. Mentions of a son… but no Y/N. Was she an imposter? Did she lie to the school? No. Everyone got background checks before entering. So that means she is related to the L/N but from where?

“Somethings got you busy?” Tamaki interjected while pushing bangs from his face. Purposely ignoring twins. His fork dug into the food while he awaited an answer.

“If I tell you, your big mouth will just blabber to the others.”

“How dare you!” A dramatic gasp and hands smacking the table. “You think so little of me Kyoya, oh my heart! My precious, innocent heart!”

“Knock it off. I’m not-”

“Ahem.” Both heads had snapped up to Y/N who lingered towards their table. Kyoya had quickly slammed his laptop shut and turned his full attention to her. She was stiff, awkwardly holding her bento box close to her chest and briefly eyeing Tamaki before looking at Kyoya. “If it’s not too much, could I sit here for lunch?”

Where the fuck did these roses come from? Tamaki was in her sights in a second. Taking her hand gently and bringing it up to his lips for greeting. Y/N nearly gagged though remained still. Her eyes were wide as she was unsure how to react.

“As much as I would love for a young, beautiful maiden such as yourself to grace us with your presence, I am afraid we were discussing important things,” Tamaki informed. Not long after Y/N ripped her hand from his grasp and took a step back. Wiping the saliva off on her dress. Tamaki squawked in surprise, offended at the action.

“On second thought,” Y/N awkwardly spoke. “I’ll just-”

“Nonsense.” Kyoya waved his hand in a dismissive manner. “You can sit right next to me.”

“But- but Kyoya.” Tamaki’s bottom lip wobbled. “She’s not a paying-”

“She’s a friend.”

At his words, Y/N felt a twinge of relief. Though also at his words the twins’ attention riveted over to the foreign maiden. A light bulb went off. If he couldn’t find anything, he knew two perfectly capable bodies able to pry information out of anyone just from persistence. The Hitachiin brothers. All he needed was to say a few words and they would do the rest. Kyoya must have been brilliant.

“Everyone this is Y/N of the L/N family. She just moved here from America though I’m not sure from what state.”

“L/N family?” Hikaru started.

“But doesn’t the L/N only have a son?” Kaoru added.

“So why haven’t we heard of you?” They finished together.

“Yea,” Honey pondered. Digging a fork into the cheesecake infront of him. “Are you like a secret child?”

“Okay, stop.” Y/N words silenced them as they all looked at her. Kyoya is more intent than the others. Tamaki snuck a quick glance at his companion with a growing realization. This curiosity was eating him alive, he noted. “I just want to eat lunch and not be interrogated. When you get to friendship level fifty I’ll spill the beans. Capiche?”

“Capiche?” Honey questioned.

“Huh? Oh it’s, I guess it’s another word for ‘got it?’”

“That’s so cool!” The loli chimed. Giggling as he stuffed sweets into his mouth.

Dammit. Internally slamming the table. Y/N case was going to be a tough one to crack. That’s okay. If there was anything Kyoya liked, it was a challenge. When he lifted his eyes to her, Y/N had given him a knowing smirk. Eyes narrowed behind his glasses and he had to bite his tongue to prevent unnecessary comments. So it seemed she was aware… like the narrator said… Kyoya liked challenges.
