Ezra has dreamed of being an astronaut since he was a little kid, his favorite time of day was the stretch between evening and night when the first stars shily popped up in the darkening sky. Watching them from his room after his mom kissed him goodnight, he promised himself he would go there one day. And after a lot of hard work, a little bit of luck, and some sweet words whispered to the right people he secured a spot as an astronaut. What he had not anticipated, however, was that each time he left to fulfill his dream it meant he'd have to leave behind the person he loved most in the world, the person who made his heart light up with only their smile, he'd have to leave you.
This time, it's a simple mission but as always there's the real possibility of him not coming back. After all, space is treacherous and where there's peace one minute there might be a meteor shower the next. The thing he used to love more about space, it being ever-changing is the thing that makes him worry now.
He sometimes wonders if you'd be better off with somebody who stays on the ground at all times. A person who doesn't dream of the stars and what lies beyond them. Someone with a regular job that doesn't split you apart for months at a time. Other times he thinks about taking you with him, but those selfish thoughts are swiftly cut off by the knowledge that your gift would be wasted in space where nobody could hear you sing. And that's something he won't allow, he will not deprive the world of listening to you, and he won't be the reason you can't live out your dreams to the fullest.
So the day of his departure he does what he always does, he kisses your forehead and mutters one last poem to you, one more declaration of his undying love. And you do what you always do, you caress his face, plant a soft kiss against his lips, and give him an iPod filled with new songs you've written just for his ears to listen to when he feels lonely. As he makes his way to the spaceship your voice makes its way to him.
"Come back to me, my love."
“I will,” he whispers back.
And so, Ezra gets into the spaceship taking half a heart with him to the stars and leaving the other half with you here on earth.
