Work Text:
“I’m sorry.” Eijun says randomly on the drive to Furuya’s house. Furuya felt like he imagined it because for one, he never thought he’d see the day where Eijun apologizes to him and God knows what for. Secondly, Furuya was drunk and could be hallucinating , is that a normal sign?
“For what?” He asks. The confusion evident in his voice. He was too tired to look at Eijun so he still laid in the passenger seat with his eyes closed. It’s actually ironic how Eijun is the sober one given that they just went to a bachelor party. Eijun’s bachelor party to be specific. To be fair, Eijun denied Miyuki’s attempt in a drinking contest because he didn’t want a headache tomorrow. Furuya on the other hand did not make the right choice.
Silence loomed in the air and this caused Furuya to sit up and take a good look at Eijun. He looks sheepish, guilty even, now Furuya needs to know what the hell he’s talking about.
“For what?” Furuya repeats. He probably sounds more impatient than he intended, but he’ll blame it on the alcohol.
He glanced at Furuya and back at the road before he spoke again.
“A lot,” He starts. Furuya can hear his breath pitch before saying the next part.
“Mainly Haruichi.”
The fuck?
Furuya decides to stay composed as much as someone in his state can be.
“What’reyou talking about?” He slurs.
Eijun dryly laughs, which makes Furuya more uneasy than he already is.
“C’mon, you know.”
No, Furuya doesn’t know. He only has one idea what Eijun could possibly be apologizing for and he didn’t think he’d have this conversation ever.
“I don’t know Sawamura. I’m too drunk and tired for this, spit it out.” He says.
“For asking him out— well not really I don’t regret that part since I’m getting married to the love of my life but I asked him out at graduation after knowing how you felt about him all throughout Seidou. You trusted me and I ruined that. I ruined you guys.”
As much as Furuya would like to agree that his and Haruichi’s now barely existent relationship was all Eijun’s fault, Furuya was the one who ruined that himself.
“Don’t apologize when he chose you, especially the night before your wedding. It feels like you’re patronizing me.”
“I’m not, plus it’s not like you ever gave him the opportunity of a choice. You never said anything!”
“You made sure of that.” Furuya spat.
“Furuya… you did that yourself.”
“Then what’s the point of this fucking apology.” He sighs tiredly.
“I don’t know!” Eijun shouts. “H-He misses you… a lot. We don’t see you often.”
“I feel like there’s a reason for that.”
“God Furuya, work with me here. I’ll never understand how we’re still friends and you and Haru—” Furuya flinched at the nickname “— aren’t. I mean, shouldn’t it be me you fall out with? I’m the one who caused this.”
“You didn’t cause anything, Sawamura. You just fell in love with him too and I can’t blame you.” Furuya says, which is then followed by a bitter laugh. “We always wanted the same things after all.”
“The ace title is a lot different from a person, Furuya.” Eijun says sternly and the reaction stuns Furuya a bit.
“Yeah you’re right, sorry.”
“I’m not sorry for being with him,” Eijun admits. “But I am sorry that I got too impatient to wait.”
Furuya simply hums and they drive the rest of the way in silence.
They finally arrive in Furuya’s driveway and he felt as if that was the most excruciating, painful ride ever. It’s not his or Eijun’s fault. Eijun is just really blunt and tired of Furuya’s ability to avoid them (being Haruichi and Sawamura). It’s better this way, Furuya thinks. Less painful for him definitely.
As Furuya opens the car door to get out, Eijun speaks out to him.
“He wanted you to be his best man, you know.”
“Then why didn’t he ask?” Furuya says with annoyance.
“He didn’t think you’d show up.”
Guilt pangs his chest.
“Then he still knows me so well.” Furuya gives Eijun a sad smile.
“Furuya,” The other boy sighs. “You’re coming tomorrow.” Eijun states, although it sounds more like he’s asking then telling him.
“Congratulations on the wedding, Sawamura. You guys deserve it.”
“Furuya!” Eijun shouts. “Don’t do this, he needs you there— we need you there.”
“Have fun tomorrow, tell Haruichi I said hello.”
“You tell him yourself.”
Furuya realizes this whole argument was going to lead to a dead end.
“Fine, I’ll come tomorrow if you swear not to force me to talk to him.”
“That’s… a terrible deal, but fine.” Eijun put his arm out for a handshake.
Furuya shakes it and nods and Eijun smiles widely at him.
Little did they know, they were both making broken promises.
