Work Text:
Eddie opens his eyes to the feeling of lips sliding across his back, following the line of his spine. He grins, turning to the other side to face the owner of those lips who’s watching with such a soft, open look it kind of makes him breathless.
“Hi.” Eddie whispers, not willing to disturb the bubble of peace surrounding them. Buck’s hand cups his jaw as he leans in and Eddie meets him in the middle for a lazy kiss, morning breath be damned. Buck hums in pleasure when Eddie slides his tongue into his mouth with an easiness that comes with habits.
It’s still so new, so fresh that no one knows but sometimes Eddie feels like they’ve been together for ever for how comfortable and settled he is in this relationship.
He remembers their first kiss in his kitchen, when he couldn’t take it anymore and got on his tiptoes to close the distance between them. Even then, it felt familiar, and easy.
He’s never had easy before, and he realizes with time how damn good it is to love his best friend in the entire world and have him love him just as much.
Buck rolls on top of Eddie, bracketing him under his firm body as their mouths move slowly, not at all rushed like the one they had before falling into bed with each other the night before.
Sometimes he wonders if they’re always going to be like this or if it’s the honeymoon phase but something in his gut tells him he’s always going to want to kiss him as much as possible because it’s his favorite thing to do.
Buck pulls away slightly, propping himself up on his elbows on each side of Eddie’s face and he looks ethereal in the morning light, the sunshine peeking from the blinds and illuminating the side of his face. He’s always been beautiful, but something about a soft, stubbled, curly-haired and bleary-eyed Buck does it for Eddie way more than any other version of Buck.
He’s so in love he feels like crying at 6 a.m in their bed just because.
“I was thinking we could go to the beach, tomorrow, once we get off shift, get some sun.” Buck suggests in a rough voice that makes it hard for Eddie to concentrate on what he’s saying.
“Yeah, sure.” Eddie replies absent-mindedly while looking at a spot that looks delicious and inviting on Buck’s neck and he presses his lips to it.
“Don’t start something you can’t finish.” Buck whispers in his ear, low and seductive.
“We have five minutes, right ?” Eddie breathes against his jaw, canting his hips up so they can meet Buck’s.
It’s something new too, his sex drive has never been higher. He thinks it may have something to do with how hot Buck is, but he just can’t seem to get enough of him.
Unfortunately for them, Eddie’s alarm clock starts ringing, announcing they only have 30 minutes to get ready and get going to not be late.
“Sorry, babe, later.” Buck chuckles, kissing him lightly before getting up.
He loves him so much, Eddie thinks as he lays there smiling at the ceiling.
***
They arrive at the scene of their fourth call of the day and Eddie’s already exhausted. They had one gigantic car pile-up that lasted around three hours and it was a mess.
Plus it’s a call about a fucking raccoon inside of a house and he’s not in the mood to play Steve Irwin to a rabid disgusting thing.
The house is in a terrible state and he sees the way Ravi’s nose wrinkles at the smell, still not used to plethora of foul things they encounter on the job. The owner is still in the front lawn, panicking and he somehow understands but she’s screaming really high-pitched and he has a killer headache.
“Ma’am calm down, we have it handled.” He says, not unkindly but not exactly sweetly.
“Let’s turn the lights on, I can’t see in there.” Bobby calls out from the living room. Weirdly the woman has black-out curtains drawn at 3 p.m and he wonders what kind of life she leads to own a bad smelling dark house that hosts raccoons.
Buck tries to flip the light switch on without success. Hen spots an electrical panel and Buck gets to it, being the one on the team with the most experience with it since he worked construction.
It happens almost in slow-motion, the light from the open front-door where Chimney is — as always as far away as possible from the animals — filtering in enough for Eddie to see Buck raise his hand, touch the panel, and seize up.
“Oh my god !” Hen shrieks as Buck falls down on the ground, still twitching.
“Evan !” Eddie screams, his entire body filling with dread at the sight.
The rest of it happens so quick too. In seconds Hen and Chimney have Buck outside on the front lawn, Ravi grabbing a crash cart while Bobby handles the electrical panel.
Buck is unresponsive but he’s stopped seizing and Eddie doesn’t know if he wants to cry or scream more. What the fuck happened ?
“He’s in V-fib, starting compressions.” Hen yells and Eddie wants to cry, stepping forward, heart in his throat. Buck is just lying there, and he’s not saying anything and his heart won’t stop fibrillating.
Is Buck dying ? Is Eddie losing the love of his life ? Another parent for his son ? No, that can’t happen. Eddie couldn’t survive losing Buck, how is he supposed to go on ? He can’t lose Buck.
“Please don’t leave me.” Eddie begs, watching Buck’s unresponsive body as Hen keeps working on him almost desperately. “Please don’t leave me, Evan.” He drops to his knees, shaky hands roughly framing Buck’s face, hating the way his eyes won’t open. “Come back, baby, please come back.” Except he doesn’t come back, and he starts flatlining.
“He’s coding ! C’mon Buck don’t do this.”
He takes his hands off when Chimney brings the paddles back to Buck’s chest, before he even yells clear . He watches, unable to breathe as she resumes the chest compressions, and almost vomits when the shrill monotone sound of the flatline doesn’t stop.
He drops his head against Buck’s, lips moving against his skin as he whispers, pleading him. “Please, baby, you can’t leave me, please come back. Please.”
“Charge to 300. Clear.”
He moves back up, eyes fixed on the monitors, waiting for— “Sinus rhythm !” Hen cries out and it’s possibly Eddie’s favorite sentence ever, he might just get it tattooed. It seems like everyone takes a collective sob of relief at the same time, and Hen wipes some tears away as they start moving Buck to put him in the back of the ambulance.
Eddie follows, grabbing a tight hold of Buck’s hand not letting go, not even as they push through the glass doors.
“Sir, you can’t go further.” A nurse says and Eddie lets go, as they roll the gurney through another set of doors, past the ER. He stays there, behind the doors for what seems like hours before Ravi finds him and leads him to the waiting room they’ve taken over.
Eddie feels empty — so he just tunes out of whatever his friends are saying and he keeps his eyes on a single spot on the wall, and tries to keep his head clear because if he doesn’t, it’ll hurt too much.
He’s in therapy so he knows it’s not healthy to refuse to deal with it, but he feels so raw and fragile and he thinks if he starts crying, he’ll never stop.
“Eddie. Eddie !”
He blinks at Chimney who looks the picture of concern. “What ?”
“Hen asked if you wanted some water.”
“Oh.” Eddie whispers, ducking his head down to stare at his hands. “Yeah, please.”
“Eddie.” Bobby says gently, full of understanding and Eddie shakes his head.
“I’m fine.” It’s probably the worst lie he’s ever told, a deaf man could hear how wrong it sounds, how bitter it sounds in his mouth.
“No you’re not.” Hen says, and Eddie purses his lips, trying to keep the tears at bay when he finally looks up and meets his friends’ eyes.
“No I’m not.” He admits in a whisper, looking right at Bobby. He blinks few times, some tears escaping his lashes and rolling down his cheeks.
Buck died right in front of him, and that’s an image he won’t ever be able to get out of his brain. Buck died in front of him, and Eddie begged him to come back, and he did and now Eddie doesn’t know what to do with all of that.
They don’t even know how much Buck means to him or maybe they do by the way they’re staring at him, waiting for him to completely break again, to lose it.
Eddie rarely loses it. He never loses it in public. Even when Buck was badly hurt in the past, he was always focused on saving him. Then again, he thinks therapy’s made him less numb, made his emotions more raw, more powerful, intense. He also thinks he loves Buck more than three years ago, way more, if that was even possible.
Buck is everything to him, he’s the air he breathes and the sunshine of his life, and every single piece of him that isn’t Christopher’s belongs to Buck. Has always belonged to Buck.
Buck who woke him up with kisses this very morning, and has a special Christopher smile and more recently an even more private Eddie smile, and loves holding Eddie’s hand everywhere they go and has this twinkle in his eyes, this little something that makes him Buck. He has this sensitive spot in his neck that makes his toes curl whenever Eddie kisses him there, and a constellation of moles shaped like a crescent on his back where Eddie has a round shaped one, Buck maintains it’s the universe’s way of linking them together because Buck says Eddie’s his moon, and Buck is Eddie’s sun and it’s so fucking cheesy but Eddie secretly loves it and runs his fingers over the moon, tracing it when Buck’s asleep and thinks you were made for me, mi sol.
And Eddie could go on and on for hours on small details he’s learned about Buck because he believes he knows absolutely everything about him now but he wasn’t prepared to learn what he looks like when he’s dead.
He knows it was just temporary. Buck’s alive now, and he’s probably going to be okay but… even if it was for two minutes, Eddie realized today he could never survive losing Buck, ever. Even when they’re grey and old, he doesn’t want him to go first. Eddie’s going first, because losing Buck would be like losing himself, and he’s had a taste of how it would feel already and he’s definitely not impressed.
And the decision’s stupid really, because what the fuck tells him that he’s going to get a choice ? Because accidents happen to them constantly and he keeps almost losing Buck and his heart won’t settle down in his chest because he could still very much lose him. Because no one’s been by to tell them he’s out of the woods and safe yet.
Not only is he the love of his life, but Christopher’s best friend too. His other dad, the one he looks up to for everything, his favorite person in the entire world. How is he supposed to tell Christopher ? He’s not even there, he’s in a fucking summer camp he begged to go to, and they didn’t even have the time to tell him they’re together yet because he’s been gone for three weeks and there’s only four days to go.
Buck’s going to be okay though. Hen and Chimney saved him. They revived him. They got his heart back. He has to be okay.
“Family of Evan Buckley ? Do we have an Edmundo Diaz here ?”
Eddie’s entire world screeches to a halt as he gets up on wobbly knees, bracing for the worst.
“Your partner will be just fine. He just has some mild burns on his right hand and that will require a graft to make sure he heals up nicely, we’re also planning on keeping him for at least 7 days to monitor the healing of his hand. His heart has been doing good, vitals could be better but that’s normal after cardiac arrest. He’s awake and has been asking for you.”
Eddie lets out a shaky exhale, nodding, stomach in knots. “Where—”
“Follow me.” She smiles and Eddie forgets all about the people around him, his focus solely on Buck, who’s asking for him.
He almost collapses when he sees him in his hospital bed, awake and talking and he must make a noise because Buck’s gaze snaps to him and he smiles, weakly, but he smiles and Eddie thinks his heart might give out from the force of his love for that man.
“Eddie.” Buck calls but Eddie’s stuck in the doorframe, his legs are unable to carry him. “Eddie, I’m okay. I’m okay.”
A sob tears through his chest as he crosses the distance between them and falls down on his knees again, right at Buck’s bedside, grabbing his healthy hand that isn’t wrapped in bandages and squeezing it so hard he hears a small crack of the blonde’s joints.
“I’m okay, Eds, I’m here.” Buck murmurs, leaning until their foreheads touch.
“You—” Eddie cuts himself off with another sob. “You— you died.”
“I’m so sorry, baby, but I’m okay, I’m right here. I’m right here, I’m still alive. I made it out.” Buck presses an urgent kiss to the corner of his mouth and Eddie turns his head slightly so their lips meet. Eddie kisses him, tinged with the desperation he’s been feeling ever since he saw Buck fall down.
“You’re not allowed to die.” Eddie says, against Buck’s lips, panting slightly, breathing Buck in like his only air can come from him. “You’re not allowed to leave me, ever. I wouldn’t survive. Promise me you won’t ever leave me.”
“I won’t ever willingly leave you, Eddie. I will always fight to come back to you, to Chris.” Buck vows, and Eddie nods, pressing another kiss to his lips to seal it.
Someone clears their throat behind them. “I’m sorry to interrupt but we have to prep you for surgery, Mr Buckley.”
Buck nods, kissing the bridge of Eddie’s nose in a soft way that makes his stomach swoop. “Yeah, sure.”
Eddie gets up, moving to sit on a chair, eyes not leaving Buck as the resident moves around him.
“How long will the surgery be ?” Eddie asks, after a few minutes of silence.
“I’d say about an hour and a half.” She says, busy checking Buck’s IV. “You will need to go back to the waiting room with the rest of your coworkers.”
“I’ll be just fine.” Buck promises him with a wide grin that makes Eddie sigh, because he always does this and minimizes risks and dangers and he almost died. His heart stopped, and general anesthesia after such an arrhythmia is a big risk. He runs a hand through Buck’s curls, willing his nerves down.
“You better be, Evan Buckley or so help me god I will kill you.” Eddie threatens, sounding a little too wrecked to be taken seriously. Buck’s face morphs into a concerned frown.
“Eddie, I’m going to be fine. It’s a simple surgery.” Buck says, running his fingers across the side of Eddie’s head. “Kiss me.”
Eddie leans over and slots their mouths together for a chaste kiss. “Satisfied ?”
“You always know how to satisfy me.” Buck winks cheekily and Eddie huffs out a small laugh, completely immune to his seductions by now.
“Don’t make dirty jokes around the doctors.” Eddie says, glancing at the resident who’s smiling.
“Dirty jokes ? Why am I not surprised ?” A voice says from the door and Eddie turns around to find Maddie there. She’s grinning but it doesn’t quite reach her eyes. “How are you, Buck ?”
“Going to get a skin graft for my burnt hand so meh. Could be better.” Buck shrugs casually. Maddie raises her eyebrows at Eddie who shakes his head helplessly.
“We’re all ready to go.” The resident says and Eddie leans down to steal another kiss, forgetting Maddie doesn’t know yet and being brought back to reality by her gasp of surprise. He doesn’t even find himself caring, to be fair. Nothing matters anymore, he’s not preoccupied by keeping their love to themselves if it means not kissing his boyfriend before his surgery.
“Uh excuse me when did this happen ?” She asks, gaping.
“Three weeks ago.” Buck says quickly, focusing back on Eddie. “Hey, I love you, I’ll be okay. Don’t freakout too much.”
“I love you.” Eddie says, letting go of his hand. It physically pains him to do so, but he watches as Maddie kisses Buck’s forehead lovingly and he gets rolled away to the OR.
“I was expecting worse when Chimney called.” Maddie tells him and Eddie nods, the flashbacks of Buck’s limp body coming back to haunt him. He shudders and forces them away.
“With electrical shocks, it’s common for the heart to go into v-fib and it’s easier to get them back than for other causes, it was just…when he arrested, I felt like my heart was ripped out of my chest and… just hearing the flatline it’s— I’m gonna hear that sound for a long long time.” He doesn’t why but the word vomit spills out of him, unable to keep it bottled in. Thank therapy for making him more talkative.
His mind keeps circling back to Jonah, who quite literally arrested Chimney’s heart just two months ago, and Eddie wants to ask God why they insist on taking the 118 as a punching bag.
“I can’t imagine having to see that.” Maddie says softly and like she can read his mind, continues. “I didn’t— when Chim was kidnapped I wasn’t there and it was stressful, to not be able to know but… I’m not as strong as Hen. I couldn’t witness that.”
Eddie shakes his head, reaching for her elbow. “Maddie, you’re just as strong as about anyone we know, if not stronger. You’re a fighter and a survivor and I admire the shit out of you.”
Her eyes turn watery as she sniffs, the corners of her mouth lifting up slightly. “Thank you.”
“Just because you don’t want to ever see the man you love hurting doesn’t mean you’re weak.” Eddie says, as she prepares to open her mouth to protest. “You love him. Don’t deny it.” She sighs. “When Buck was hurt, I could always focus on the task of getting him to the hospital alive except today I couldn’t focus on anything except for the fact that I needed him to live.”
“You really love him.” She observes, with a proud smile.
“He’s everything to me, Maddie.” He admits, sincerely and she tugs him closer for a hug, wrapping her hands around him.
“Thank you, for loving my brother so much.” Maddie whispers as he sinks into the embrace he didn’t know he needed. He knows how much it means to have her blessing, because she raised Buck all on her own, and she’s the reason why he’s Eddie’s favorite person because she made him Buck and he loves her beyond words for that.
“No need to thank me.” He simply smiles, and they separate, getting back to the waiting room where Bobby is pacing like a madman.
“How is he ?” He asks immediately, eyes wide, full of worry.
“Great. They took him to surgery right now but he was making jokes and talking, he’s fine.” Maddie says and Bobby sighs of relief.
“They said we couldn’t see him until he’s back from surgery and moved to a normal room.” Hen tells them with a grimace. “Family only which apparently includes Eddie.”
Eddie freezes like a kid caught doing something their parents said no to. “Uh… I’m his emergency contact and his power of attorney so…”
“You call all your emergency contacts baby ?” Chimney asks, one eyebrow raised.
Shit. Eddie laughs uncomfortably, scratching at his jaw. “I’m uh… I—” he doesn’t know what to say because they agreed Christopher should be the first to know and now Maddie knows and they’re all going to know before him. He closes his mouth with a click and looks at Chimney helplessly.
His phone rings, bringing him out of his predicament and right into a much worse one because it’s Christopher checking-in after his day at camp.
He declines the FaceTime and initiates a phone call instead, not willing to scar his child with his red-rimmed puffy eyes.
“Hey kiddo.”
“Hi Dad, why won’t you FaceTime ? Are you naked ?”
“No I’m not naked.” Eddie laughs and weirdly enough, all of the 118 bursts out laughing. “I um— buddy I have to tell you something.” He sobers, grimacing.
“What ?”
“Buck… had an accident at work. He uh… electrocuted himself so he’s in the hospital. He’s okay though, he’s in surgery because he got a burn on his hand but it’s… it’s fine.” He tries to use his most convincing voice but it falls flat even to him.
There’s a long pause before Christopher speaks up again. “Will his hand hurt a lot ?”
“He won’t be able to use it for a while I think. They’re going to keep him at the hospital so they can see how nice it heals. He’ll still be there when I pick you up.”
“Oh. So he won’t be home with us ?” Christopher sounds utterly disappointed and Eddie hates it. He hates disappointing Chris because he’s been through so much and the summer camp was his idea of normalcy, of what a kid’s life should be like. Fun, marshmallows, bunk beds, water sports. He shouldn’t have to worry about one of his parents being in the hospital, again .
“Just a for a few days, mijo. He’ll be home soon after you, don’t worry. I’m sure he’s going to be really sad he missed today’s call though, so how about you tell me something you’d want him to know and I’ll tell him as soon as he wakes up ?”
Buck loves those calls even more than Eddie and always urges Christopher to tell him absolutely everything he did. It’s honestly heartwarming to hear his boys chatting for an entire hour and not being willing to stop until a camp counsellor says it’s time for the phones to be taken back. Buck always protests harder than any child.
“Okay. Tell him that today we went kayaking in the lake and he said it would be fun and he was right, it was so much fun. Marissa fell in the water when her kayak turned over it was hilarious, Dad.”
“I bet it was.” Eddie smiles softly. “I’m sure Buck will love to hear that.”
“Tell him I love him and I’m sorry he’s hurt and I miss him.”
“He knows, and he loves and misses you just as much, I promise. It’s just four days, and then we’ll all be together again.”
“Can we sleep at the hospital when I come back ?”
Eddie huffs. “You just want to stay up past your bedtime.” He knows that boy and knows how Buck enables him most times because it’s the summer break, Eds ! They’re both deadly with their puppy dog eyes that Eddie can’t resist.
“Nooo but it would be like a slumber party.”
“How about we have a slumber party at home when he’s discharged ?”
“I can sleep in your bed ?”
“Yeah, Buck bought some very fluffy blankets the other day when we went to Target so we could just make a fort in our bed if it’s not too hot and watch movies on the IPad. That fine by you ?”
“Yeah !”
“Good. What are you doing tomorrow ?” He asks, changing the subject and letting his son’s voice loosen the knots in his stomach.
***
Buck groans. “Am I in heaven ?”
“No, Buck you’re not.” Maddie says, voice tinged with amusement.
The resident came to fetch them and guide them to Buck’s new room as soon as his surgery was done. They’ve been waiting for him to wake up for about four minutes, and Eddie has been mostly focused on staring at his sleeping form.
“Then why is an angel here ?” Buck says, full of wonder as he stares at Eddie who blushes bright red under the attention of so many people.
“Ooh he’s high.” Chimney says, delighted.
“Oh my god.” Buck gasps suddenly, face twisted in horror and Eddie’s heart jumps, immediately ready to ask him what’s wrong. “You should tell Eddie I’m sorry we can’t go to the beach.”
Eddie has to stifle a laugh, relaxing and taking his hand. “It’s okay, I forgive you. We’ll go to the beach later.”
“Vamos a la playa a mí me gusta baila el ritmo de la noche sounds of fiesta.” Buck starts singing loudly — and badly — and Eddie frowns, not being able to recognize the song at all. He wonders where he learned it.
“What song is that, Buckaroo ?” Hen asks with a chuckle.
“You don’t know that song ? ‘S good song. Hey where’s Alex ?” Buck looks around the room, brows pulled together in confusion.
Eddie blinks, the name not familiar at all. “Who’s Alex ?”
“My roommate. Although maybe screw him because you’re pretty hot, maybe we could go to my room ? It’s in the east wing of the hotel.” Buck says, eyeing Eddie with lust.
Then it all clicks for Eddie. Buck thinks they’re in Peru, which is probably where he learned that song.
“I’m already in your room, Buck.” Eddie says, face warming again.
“Ooh right. Well you should come closer then, I don’t bite. Unless you want me to.”
Hen cackles loudly at that and Eddie flushes, sitting down on the edge of Buck’s bed as he moves his unbandaged hand to grab the side of Eddie’s face.
“What’s your name ?” Buck asks, smirking.
“Eddie.”
Buck’s smirk turns into a genuine bright smile. “Aw like my best friend. I love my Eddie.”
“You’re my best friend too, Ev.”
Buck scowls then. “No I’m Eddie’s best friend, not yours. I love Eddie. My Eddie not you Eddie. Only my Eddie calls me Ev”
Eddie’s insides feel all gooey with the knowledge that even high, Buck still knows who he belongs to. He says my Eddie , like Eddie belongs to him too, and of course he does, has always did. Buck says my Eddie the way Eddie feels like saying my Buck , this urge to claim him, to let everyone know Buck is his and his only.
“Hey Buck what do you love most about your Eddie ?” Chimney asks slyly as Eddie turns to glare at him and is absolutely not surprised — but very humiliated by Buck’s quick answer.
“His ass.” He screws his eyes shut and turns back to Buck who’s watching him with a dopey smile. Everyone bursts out laughing, Hen all but falling off her chair. “His smile too. And the giggle when it tickles. Oh and his sun.”
“His what ?” Ravi asks, confused.
“Eres mi sol.” Eddie replies, forgetting about the others for a few seconds where he loses himself in Buck’s wide blue eyes. You’re my sun. You are my sunshine. You are the light of my life.
“Baby, you’re here !” Buck exclaims, recognition flashing over his face just from the term of endearment Eddie uses only for him. “I missed you so much !”
Eddie hears their friends’ loud snickers behind him and almost flips them off but finds himself with an armful of Buck who wraps his arm around his neck and tucks his face under his chin.
He smiles fondly and threads his fingers in his hair, scratching slightly at the scalp. “Yeah I’m here, Ev. I’ve missed you too.”
“Where’s Chris ?”
“Camp. Remember ?”
Buck pulls slightly away from the hug, eyes watery and huge, pouting exaggeratedly. He is the absolute cutest adult Eddie has ever seen. “I miss him, Eds we should— we should keep him for ever because I miss him too much, y’know he’s so tiny and we can’t just let him leave like that. I miss my tiny best friend.”
Eddie smiles and watches as Buck’s eyes flutter close, and he seems to slump back into the bed. “I know, just sleep, mi sol.” He murmurs, his fingers tracing the shape of his face lightly. Buck just hums and he’s out cold.
“Maddie are you crying ?” He asks as soon as he hears familiar sniffling behind them.
“It’s just— I’m so happy for you.” She blubbers, wiping at her eyes. “He’s so happy with you and he has a family.”
He exhales softly and pulls her closer for a side hug. “It’s really crazy how much you Buckleys cry.” Because Buck cries all the time, constantly but never really of sadness just— cute reunion videos, puppies being adorable, pixar movies. They always get to him. Eddie cries when he’s sad, Buck cries when he’s happy.
“We’re emotional people.” She laughs wetly, dropping her head to his shoulder. “I’m gonna cry so hard at your wedding.”
“Ugh same.” Hen groans, putting her hand on Eddie’s shoulder.
Eddie hums, tilting his head in consideration, feeling warm all over at the thought of marrying Buck someday. “We’ll get you lots of tissues.”
***
When Buck wakes up the second time around, everyone’s gone home except for Eddie. He groans and opens his blue eyes, grinning as soon as they land on Eddie.
“Hey.”
“Hi.” Eddie replies, glad he’s not high on morphine anymore. “How are you doing ?”
“Thirsty.”
Eddie hands him the cup of water he already had ready for him. “How’s the pain ?”
“Doesn’t hurt that much. ‘M fine. Told you so.” Buck says, laying back down. “Did I really say I love your ass in front of Bobby ?”
“Yup. And Ravi’s filmed it all.” Eddie says, eyebrows raised.
Buck groans, cheeks warming. “Sorry. You mad ?”
“No I’m not mad. You said you love my ass, I would have a problem if you hated it.” Eddie jokes, grabbing his hand. “It was sweet.“
“But they know now.” Buck says, frowning.
“Yeah. Did you not want them to know ?” Eddie asks carefully. Buck was the one to suggest keeping it to themselves and he’s not sure if he’ll be upset or not.
“No it’s just— I wanted Chris to know first.” Buck pouts, and Eddie sighs of relief, because he’s not ashamed.
“I know but it’s fine. It doesn’t matter, you’re alive and you’re fine and you survived. You’re safe, that matters to me.” Eddie says, framing his beautiful face and looking into his beautiful eyes and thinking he wants to keep him safe for ever — wrap him in bubble wrap and then his arms and then keep him safe in their bed at home, under the covers where nothing can ever hurt him again. “Your surgery went great, they said they still have to see how the graft takes over the next few days.”
“That’s good. Did they say when I would be able to use it again ?” Buck asks, seemingly worried and Eddie knows him so well he knows exactly what’s going through his mind, work.
“A few weeks, nothing much. As soon as the skin is healed, you’ll be cleared for work.”
“Good. That’s good.” Buck murmurs and he stays silent a few seconds, eyes tracing Eddie’s face. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Eddie kisses the corner of his mouth to punctuate it. “So fucking much, baby, you have no idea.”
“I think I do.” Buck smiles softly, catching Eddie’s bottom lip between his and pulling slightly, almost making Eddie moan. “I love you so much I went into cardiac arrest. Your love is like an electrical shock.”
Eddie groans, hiding his face in Buck’s pillow. “It’s really too soon to make jokes, babe.”
Buck laughs loudly and doesn’t say anything for a while, probably searching for the next cheesy line. “You know what burns more than being electrocuted ? My desire for you.”
Eddie smacks his shoulders with the pillow in retaliation.
